I've got back Mr. Andrew MacKinnon, surfer, surf reporter, journalist, author, conservationist, eco warrior. The man behind the Gold Coast surf reserves. I don't think he's got more hats than you can find in a Or, I'll tell you.
00;00;51;07 - 00;00;58;24
Tappa
But, today we're here to talk about the World Surfing Conservation Conference in February 26th. So welcome to the Green Room, Andrew MacKinnon.
00;00;58;24 - 00;01;00;23
Andrew
Thanks very much, Terry. Pleasure to be.
00;01;00;23 - 00;01;08;07
Tappa
Here, Mike. The world surfing conference. Well, so conservation. Sorry. Surfing conservation. Yes.
00;01;08;10 - 00;01;09;22
Andrew
Conservation conference.
00;01;09;22 - 00;01;11;02
Tappa
What's it all about?
00;01;11;04 - 00;01;39;07
Andrew
It's just not about ocean conservation. This wellness themes. It's all about sustainability, climate change, shark mitigation. There's a whole lot of different issues, diverse subjects that we're covering. So we just didn't want to be restricted just to the ocean conservation themes. It's a broader base that we're looking at. And we've got experts from all over the world turning up, talking on all these different levels.
00;01;39;09 - 00;01;42;12
Tappa
That's awesome. Right now it's in February. Is that right? What date? Yeah.
00;01;42;12 - 00;01;52;29
Andrew
So it starts on Monday the 16th of February. The Gold Coast campus, Southern Cross University and runs until Thursday the 19 to February. So it's a four day conference.
00;01;52;29 - 00;01;54;21
Tappa
Open to the general public.
00;01;54;23 - 00;02;17;26
Andrew
Absolutely open to the general public. You can go on the site w s c 2020 6.com dot I year or just Google out World Surfing Conservation Conference. You can go to the website and register to buy a ticket. At the moment the early bird tickets are out there. They're about 350 now. With that, your meals are included for four days.
00;02;17;28 - 00;02;18;13
Andrew
You're also.
00;02;18;13 - 00;02;21;04
Tappa
Into like breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner or.
00;02;21;09 - 00;02;24;03
Andrew
Is a full lunch full buffet lunch.
00;02;24;04 - 00;02;25;23
Tappa
Or whole again.
00;02;25;25 - 00;02;45;13
Andrew
You know, light breakfast, light afternoon. Yeah. But we've also got free movies at night. We've got other functions happening. If you go to the program, you can see the four days is pretty full on and with a night time activities. So it's really good value. You know, normally it can cost up to $1,000 to go to a conference.
00;02;45;13 - 00;02;51;24
Andrew
Yeah. So we've tried to give really good value. And if I can just reach over here without bumping the microphone.
00;02;51;26 - 00;02;52;13
Tappa
Look at.
00;02;52;13 - 00;03;04;13
Andrew
Everybody gets a tube of reef safe organic zinc sunscreen. Yeah this is really good. You can put it all over your face, tap and it won't get in your eyes.
00;03;04;14 - 00;03;06;01
Tappa
Hate that when the sunshine know.
00;03;06;07 - 00;03;14;17
Andrew
Yeah, yeah. But it's also really good for your skin. And it's good for the ocean. Is a sunscreen. Some sunscreens were banned in Hawaii because.
00;03;14;17 - 00;03;15;28
Tappa
You shine that when we need to.
00;03;15;28 - 00;03;35;10
Andrew
Be polluting. 4 or 5 years ago. And we've got a couple of experts to talk all about that, you know, you often see Kelly Slater also talking about some sunscreens are not safe. You know, everyone thinks, put on the sun slip, slop, slap used to be the old adage, well, you got to be careful what you put.
00;03;35;15 - 00;03;45;22
Tappa
On the kind of zinc guy. Myself, I don't like the, alcohol based, ones or whatever. They're whatever they are, but I got the zinc. That's the best way. I don't get it wrong with the zinc.
00;03;45;23 - 00;03;50;06
Andrew
I grew out with the zinc, actually, my mom's make up, you know,
00;03;50;08 - 00;03;58;18
Tappa
We'll see. There's a lot of nice brands on my cap brands, and they're. They're pretty good. But you weren't the pink zinc kind of guy on the white seas before white zinc.
00;03;58;21 - 00;03;59;09
Andrew
I was before.
00;03;59;09 - 00;04;01;07
Tappa
King saying, oh, wow. Yeah.
00;04;01;09 - 00;04;23;15
Andrew
It was months of makeup and it worked the trade, but I still got burnt. I mean, we all get burned. Yeah. So we're going to discuss all those sort of health issues, too. It's all about impact on surfing, an impact on us when we go surfing and had a better experience, had to protect the planet, had to protect, ocean surfing amenity.
00;04;23;21 - 00;04;46;07
Andrew
When I say amenity, I'm not talking about the toilet block. I'm talking about the beach and surf breaks and looking at how we can devise policies that protect and and that, safe. And they're safeguarded for the future. So there's a lot of great experts sitting out from of the waves. There's a world governing body of world surfing reserves.
00;04;46;09 - 00;05;14;23
Andrew
They've just released this great guide on how to protect surfing coastlines. And their mantra is protecting surfing ecosystems. It's an incredible study. So they'll be unveiling that. And City of Gold Coast I mean City of Gold Coast, you know, they always get rubbish for one thing after another. But the people don't realize the work that goes in behind the scenes on the surf management plan and what we've been doing through the World Surfing reserve.
00;05;14;26 - 00;05;34;27
Andrew
And Scott Gillies, you know, former CEO of Surfing Queensland, is originally part of our foundation group. He's going to be delivering on council's new SIM surfing infrastructure master plan. All right. It's just a beach and surf amenity. It's all about why feels artificial reefs surfing culture.
00;05;35;04 - 00;05;37;06
Tappa
Is this love for the city of the gold Coast?
00;05;37;09 - 00;05;56;14
Andrew
The city is a Gold Coast and it follows through from the ocean beaches strategy that council of use over the last 20 years to maintain the beaches. So I'm really looking forward to that. That's going to be on the final day. And then we've also got the recreational water quality monitoring management strategy.
00;05;56;20 - 00;05;57;12
Tappa
Yeah. What's that?
00;05;57;19 - 00;06;25;02
Andrew
Well, it's all about these stations all over the Gold Coast that are monitoring the water, the water quality. So, you know, if the water quality is not safe to go swimming or surfing. And so all this work is going on behind the scenes. And these new strategies are going to be unveiled on that final day on the Thursday when we'll also have panel group discussions, talking a whole lot of things, including high schools.
00;06;25;04 - 00;06;37;06
Andrew
And, Ziggy McKenzie is their latest recruit. You know, she's in the Billy club, she's world under 16 junior champion. She's actually going to Peru next week for the World.
00;06;37;06 - 00;06;40;11
Tappa
I say we have just 2 to 2 burly girls.
00;06;40;14 - 00;06;54;03
Andrew
There you go. And, I mean, I basically nearly went one and two in the Philippines to the all over there. So, I'm not sure if I can join the group, but, you know, it would be good if she could, but.
00;06;54;04 - 00;07;06;15
Tappa
But, Ziggy is part of the coup school. We had Matt Barber in here a couple of weeks ago who started the Koa program, and it's amazing program, that program. And, I learned a bit from Matt, and I suppose she'll be talking about that a bit as well.
00;07;06;15 - 00;07;33;20
Andrew
Absolutely. And Matt's probably going to be the guy that steering that. So we went and saw him. He'd actually helped us in 2020 when we did Global Wave Conference. And, rabbit's young son, Kia Bartholomew was in that. And Johnny Law, you know, petulance. Brother. So this is like the new generation coming through and Matt Barber from Co is going to do panel presentation with high school students on that final day on Thursday.
00;07;33;22 - 00;07;45;26
Andrew
But Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday we're going to have single key speakers. It looks like Sam Milsom he was Australian of the year in 2024, is from Tasmania, is a seaweed farmer.
00;07;45;28 - 00;07;46;27
Tappa
Seaweed farmer.
00;07;46;28 - 00;07;50;03
Andrew
He was on Australian Story. It's an amazing story.
00;07;50;03 - 00;07;54;20
Tappa
And and where does he farm. The seaweed is like is the ocean in the ocean.
00;07;54;20 - 00;07;56;12
Andrew
Yeah. Yeah. And I mean.
00;07;56;15 - 00;07;57;00
Tappa
Yeah.
00;07;57;02 - 00;08;17;06
Andrew
So it was Karen Nelson that said to me, oh you should get Sam. I said, yeah, I saw him on TV. That's a good call. And I rang him up and he's really enthusiastic about it. So I'm pretty sure we're going to have him kicking off proceedings on Monday at six. And he'll be our first speaker. Sam Milsom lion's going to be speaking Lion Beach.
00;08;17;06 - 00;08;34;11
Andrew
Lee's going to be speaking at 11:00 on Monday. And you know, you'd you don't get a bit of motivational speakers in the seven times world women's champion line, basically. Plus she's actually the ambassador of Manly Freshwater World Surfing Reserve.
00;08;34;13 - 00;08;39;07
Tappa
Yes, of course, mainly in freshwater or freshwater, where the Duke introduced surfing.
00;08;39;14 - 00;09;00;14
Andrew
Well, you go to the big dam. That's right. And got surfing really happening. And, you know, lions got freshwater roots too, because she's in the freshwater boardriders. But, she just became the WSO ambassador for Manly Freshwater a couple of years ago. So this is really the first time of lines, you know, to, you know, stand out as an ocean conservation ambassador.
00;09;00;14 - 00;09;12;19
Andrew
So I'm really looking forward to that. We're still putting people into the program. Abstracts finished on the 19th of December. So people want to submit an abstract and speak.
00;09;12;22 - 00;09;14;23
Tappa
For those who don't know what's an abstract. Right.
00;09;14;23 - 00;09;17;14
Andrew
So abstract is what you're going to talk about.
00;09;17;16 - 00;09;19;02
Tappa
Right. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yep.
00;09;19;04 - 00;09;21;10
Andrew
So so you give a little profile of yourself.
00;09;21;16 - 00;09;24;07
Tappa
People can apply for that. And. That's right. Yeah. I'd like to talk.
00;09;24;10 - 00;09;39;11
Andrew
Yeah. You send in a bio and yourself, a summary of what you're going to talk about. And then we review and write it. But at this stage we've probably got about 80 speakers. So the program's filling up really fast.
00;09;39;11 - 00;09;48;13
Tappa
And what's the actual goal of the whole thing, Andrew? Is it to like, bring more, you know, light on surfing and the different aspects that are all involved with it or.
00;09;48;21 - 00;10;24;15
Andrew
Yeah, it's it's definitely about awareness, education and just not a talk fest. Yeah. We really want to hear from people that have got solutions for the future solution based. And a lot of this new research is all about that, Terry. It's really amazing. A lot of people are not aware of all this behind the scenes ocean conservation movement and all the different organizations that are really putting in the hard yards and seriously trying to do something that's going to work because we, we're in dire consequences.
00;10;24;15 - 00;10;28;27
Tappa
And it's a wonderful thing. It's not just Gold Coast, really, you know, it's a whole world.
00;10;28;27 - 00;10;50;09
Andrew
It's a whole it's a global movement. And that's why we called it World Surfing Conservation Conference. And like I said, it's going to bring in World leading experts and, really excited about the nature of the people turning out. We had to release the program in December with all the speakers to confirm who's going to be there.
00;10;50;11 - 00;10;55;08
Andrew
But we're bad. We're just under three months out, so it's coming up pretty quickly.
00;10;55;10 - 00;11;01;22
Tappa
Yeah, well, we had Richard Harvey, of course he's going to be he's going to be and he had Richard Harvey last week. He was saying about that as well. Yeah.
00;11;01;22 - 00;11;21;07
Andrew
Well Richard spoke at the Global Wave conference as well. And he was the first one to almost send that abstract, you know, when we opened it up and it's so good to have Richard because he's been there. He's done it all. He goes right back to the late 50s all the way through. You made the transition. You know, he's incredible.
00;11;21;07 - 00;11;26;19
Andrew
Surf a little like an artist. And you know the contributions that he's made in his story.
00;11;26;19 - 00;11;28;18
Tappa
And he's got a novel coming soon.
00;11;28;20 - 00;11;29;18
Andrew
Oh I bet he has.
00;11;29;18 - 00;11;30;14
Tappa
A it's a fiction.
00;11;30;14 - 00;11;38;10
Andrew
Novel. Protect the innocence. Yeah, that's a good idea. That's the way to do it. Right, Roger. Biography. And get your acid.
00;11;38;13 - 00;11;44;27
Tappa
And I'll just tell you at the moment, like looking for my lawyers, for your biography. You got a biography mean? Yeah.
00;11;44;27 - 00;12;00;28
Andrew
I was sort of thinking the the way to handle that was to, to do a biography on, you know, the things you're really proud about and things that weren't a fan. And then the other side of the story turn that into a novel.
00;12;01;00 - 00;12;08;15
Tappa
Well, might, not like some of the high jinks that have happened in the past, I'd say. Yeah, we have to do that for me too. All right? Yeah, yeah.
00;12;08;20 - 00;12;12;15
Andrew
That's for sure. You get to protect the innocent 70. Yeah, you do definitely.
00;12;12;18 - 00;12;21;08
Tappa
But my. It sounds like a really, really good thing, so. And one like I'm really interested in, we're going to try and get him on the green room too is Philippe Palma.
00;12;21;10 - 00;12;24;27
Andrew
Yes. Lupo Palma was Peru's first world surfing champion.
00;12;24;27 - 00;12;27;02
Tappa
1965, the year I was born.
00;12;27;05 - 00;12;52;02
Andrew
Has an incredible. Yeah. And he beat Nat Young for that title. And, you know, Philippe Klein said that was the first world title. Of course, we all say, well, midget finally won the Festival tunnel. It's 1964. Yeah, it was only 3 or 4 internationals in that event, whereas the one that Philippe won, there was a smattering of Californians, Hawaiians, French, New Zealand, you name it.
00;12;52;04 - 00;13;18;09
Andrew
But Philippe was a big wave rider and he won to put a ruckus. That's where, you know, Ziggy McKenzie and the juniors are going next week for the World Juniors. It's a big wide spot. It's sort of like a Bell's beach, in a way. And once, Philippe won the world championship, he then decided to move to Hawaii and he sort of disappeared, not disappeared, but he was really under the radar.
00;13;18;09 - 00;13;30;07
Andrew
But he was always in the Duke Classic. It was in the Smirnoff, the early smirnoff's. He was actually runner up to net in the 1976 and then of America. You'll have to ask him about that.
00;13;30;09 - 00;13;30;23
Tappa
Definitely.
00;13;30;23 - 00;13;39;13
Andrew
Well, that one went backwards and forwards in the end. I had to run a man on man to decide the winner. So that's a really good question for you to ask him about that.
00;13;39;13 - 00;13;56;09
Tappa
And also at last, sorry, about ten years ago, I think because it was Berkeley's 50th year, I had a his 50th, 1965 to not do that in 50. So I actually took the shirt off my back in In Rain by, by Surf Club and gave it to him and then and then the Ryan by Bike surf Club said, nobody wants to say that.
00;13;56;09 - 00;14;10;11
Tappa
And gave me a rain by by Surf Club. But I gave it to Philip Philip aid and yeah he loved it because that was the, you know. Yeah. So that's the last time I saw him. And I'll tell you what. My knees. He was looking fine as he look at Nam I him he still for.
00;14;10;11 - 00;14;16;27
Andrew
92 year old is unbelievable and he's still out there charging 20ft. Is he that he lives on Kauai.
00;14;16;27 - 00;14;21;09
Tappa
Lives 82 AD in 20ft wise. Yeah. He that's messed.
00;14;21;09 - 00;14;33;08
Andrew
Up half the year he spends and roti and, So it's a smoke called the mountain when it gets really big, is the guy that sits at the furthest and takes the biggest waves. And then.
00;14;33;09 - 00;14;33;25
Tappa
82.
00;14;33;28 - 00;14;44;02
Andrew
And then he loves charging at at Hunter by and unlike they can and a 30 40ft. Yeah really big waves. So he is the essential big boy. Proud of it.
00;14;44;04 - 00;14;50;14
Tappa
Does he wear a vest or anything now or like a, inflatable vest or is he just.
00;14;50;16 - 00;14;54;03
Andrew
I don't think he does that. That's another good question.
00;14;54;03 - 00;14;56;19
Tappa
For him to ask him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00;14;56;22 - 00;14;57;03
Andrew
You know.
00;14;57;06 - 00;14;59;08
Tappa
He's the true first world champion.
00;14;59;11 - 00;15;00;23
Andrew
He is the first free.
00;15;00;23 - 00;15;02;13
Tappa
World champion to.
00;15;02;15 - 00;15;29;00
Andrew
I guess if International Surfing Federation, because after the World Cup isn't manly in 64, they created the ISF. The following in 1964 to host that world surfing Championship in Peru. And it was a Peruvian guy called Eduardo Arena who was the president. Felipe, I can tell you all about this. It's fascinating history, but what Felipe has come up with now is surf to 100 program.
00;15;29;05 - 00;15;34;27
Andrew
So he's convinced. Terry, I just gotta keep charging until he's 100.
00;15;35;00 - 00;15;43;04
Tappa
Oh, my, my 82. Like, you know, a lot of people think of me. I'll be happy to my guy, 82, and he's still surfing 24 times.
00;15;43;07 - 00;15;53;00
Andrew
I'm 72. I'm thinking, can I do it? But I look at Felipe and I think maybe I can, you know, and that's the thing about Levi's. So inspirational.
00;15;53;03 - 00;15;59;20
Tappa
That's awesome. And I believe today you've got the, the indigenous, first surfboards, all the, like the soft things or.
00;15;59;22 - 00;16;24;04
Andrew
The cabinet de Toro. So there you go. Back 5000 years in, Peruvian culture through the Inca, from one chunk of northern Peru. One Choco is a world surfing reserve. It's number five. Gold coast is number eight. But one check is all about preserving the culture of the Camino de Tara, aka the Peruvian rainbow. And it's made out of reeds.
00;16;24;06 - 00;16;47;09
Andrew
Now, the reason I made these things is, you know, they they get really big. Why's it one choco? Two. So the fisherman designed this. Like what? What the Spanish call the seahorse. That's what can be, you know, the Toro seahorse. And they'd go up and down through the break and the Spanish. So it looked like jockeys on a horse going up and down.
00;16;47;09 - 00;17;13;00
Andrew
And the. And then they go out the back and the surf fishing and they get a lot of fish. And then when they come in they ride the waves in. So Peru claims that these, some of the first wave catching crafts. Yeah. As, as distinct from surfboard riding in Hawaii. Yeah. This is the first wave craft, you know, first wave riding craft.
00;17;13;00 - 00;17;27;29
Andrew
So and I think that they're fair to say that because there was, ruins in tree line behind one child. That's the town. And it showed pottery artifacts where they were riding the seahorse.
00;17;28;02 - 00;17;28;29
Tappa
Oh, wow.
00;17;29;02 - 00;17;39;05
Andrew
The died back thousands of years. So they had had had evidence of it. And so they maintain that they can be here to deter is the first surf wave craft.
00;17;39;12 - 00;17;50;25
Tappa
Yeah. Because I know do know there's a long history too of our indigenous in the wave as well indigenous peoples of Australia as well. And it'd be interesting to dig into a bit of that culture. I don't know if there's anyone out there who could maybe grabbed it.
00;17;50;25 - 00;18;17;28
Andrew
Yeah. So yeah, we're looking at that at the moment. In fact, in Southern Cross University is sending it invitations to indigenous on that. But just on that, we're vido that's his nickname. Yeah. His full name is Carlos. UN con Zola. And so is he coming? Would be the. He will be crafting a, can we know on stage in front of you and you'll show how it's done.
00;18;18;03 - 00;18;38;19
Andrew
And basically they bring the, reeds out there, like, like big bamboos, things, you know, and a big, long board cover. And, they'll bring them out and he'll put them on the stage, and he's got a string and he's got he's cutting north. And within two hours he'll just whip up a 12ft, foot cabinet. Oh, wow.
00;18;38;25 - 00;18;43;15
Andrew
And he'll do that in front of everyone, and then he'll do a demonstration at the end of the.
00;18;43;15 - 00;18;46;00
Tappa
Concert, walk across a ride or something to Kieran.
00;18;46;05 - 00;19;06;27
Andrew
On the. So so we're going to do a paddle out, you know, a grain mound probably on Thursday morning and he'll do a demo and on the computer that he constructs there and we are talking about doing an East Coast activation tour down the coast from Gold Coast upon the. We haven't quite got to that yet. We did something like that in 2016.
00;19;06;28 - 00;19;26;15
Andrew
That's when you met Levi back then. Yeah. And that was the same time that we got endorsed as a Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve. So we've sort of borrowed on a little bit of all of that. And so now we know what we're doing. Now we know we can get the raids across without being arrest right now by customs.
00;19;26;17 - 00;19;50;02
Andrew
And, if people want to leave it when they say, you know, had this thing done and how it's made and, yeah, it's not to say that other indigenous have would have done something similar. It there's examples in Western Africa and also in India, you know, the fishermen going out on their canoes and writing wise thinking, but that doesn't look anything like that.
00;19;50;02 - 00;19;56;07
Andrew
Can we add a guitar that's a different wave craft machine to catch swells?
00;19;56;10 - 00;20;00;28
Tappa
That's unreal. Andrew. Now you've got some other guests as well. I believe you got Tom Carroll coming along.
00;20;00;28 - 00;20;19;22
Andrew
Yeah, that's really exciting to have, Tom. I mean, I've known him for a long time. I met him right back in 1974 when he was a young grommet in the Newport Classic Club. And Nick Carroll, Nick's coming as well. Nick's one of the greatest writers. But to get Tom there is so good because, he's got so much to offer.
00;20;19;22 - 00;20;29;21
Andrew
And we've got this storytelling category as well. So facilitate for Tom and it can be bad health, experience or what have you.
00;20;29;21 - 00;20;31;12
Tappa
He does a lot of meditation now.
00;20;31;17 - 00;20;54;25
Andrew
He's right into the meditation and the breathing and and once again, he's very healthy. You know, it's like Philippe's number one to him. That keeps him going, keeps him surfing. And so, yeah, it's it's really good to have you. You know, he's a two times world champion, former three times pipeline Masters champion. You know, he's such an enigma.
00;20;54;25 - 00;20;56;00
Andrew
People love Tom.
00;20;56;03 - 00;21;03;02
Tappa
Yeah, well, that's on ro. Any other other guests you'd like to mention, Mike, that you got coming along? There's so many guests.
00;21;03;07 - 00;21;05;03
Andrew
That there's so many, isn't there?
00;21;05;03 - 00;21;14;19
Tappa
And, And what are the other like? Okay, we've got the environmental side. If you got anything on actual construction of surfboards and that sort of thing, you're doing something on that.
00;21;14;21 - 00;21;18;01
Andrew
Yes. That's yet to be confirmed, but we've got something.
00;21;18;01 - 00;21;21;23
Tappa
Is this a thing about materials in that now isn't it? That's right. Yeah.
00;21;21;25 - 00;21;37;10
Andrew
And, we we do have this guy from Murdoch University in West Australia who's got something on that. So we're hopeful that he's going to present what he's doing on using different materials rather than foam and fiberglass.
00;21;37;10 - 00;21;50;04
Tappa
So speaking of foam and fiberglass behind you, you've got that has a burn a beautiful channel bottom craft there. It's got the, the World Surfing Conservation Conference poster on it, but that's up for auction. That board from a and burn.
00;21;50;07 - 00;22;09;14
Andrew
Yeah that's right thanks to Ian Byrne. He's done added that board to us. And we're going to be able to auction that on the third. So not the finale, not which is also, the 10th anniversary celebration of Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve at the collective. But it's going to be a big night, and I have Peruvian dancing.
00;22;09;17 - 00;22;10;21
Andrew
We've got, seeing.
00;22;10;22 - 00;22;13;14
Tappa
You doing a bit of dancing there, mate. On, on.
00;22;13;16 - 00;22;14;20
Andrew
That was the somebody.
00;22;14;23 - 00;22;15;23
Tappa
That was a samba. That was.
00;22;15;23 - 00;22;38;25
Andrew
Pretty bad. But I, I'm not up for the Peruvian dancing, but with Vito, who makes it so he can do the Peruvian dancing, too. He he's amazing. But, Yeah, having that, that six six and Byrne channel about him as a, auction item will be really good. The proceeds go towards Cromer Wildlife Sanctuary. The conservation program and the animal hospital.
00;22;38;28 - 00;23;01;15
Andrew
We also got Emily Rose's Wood Park graphic turtle. That's going to be a masterpiece. That'll be an auction item. And at the moment, at the collective, we've got a photo gallery of photos, you know, that depict the southern end of the Gold Coast, which is what the Gold Coast is over from barely through snapper from the 60s, right through to.
00;23;01;15 - 00;23;10;03
Andrew
So you see, Alfred, that's free. You can go in there any time and check that out. And some of those photos will go on auction.
00;23;10;05 - 00;23;15;26
Tappa
Oh that's great. So, there's a lot of social events, isn't there? With this? With this? Yeah.
00;23;15;26 - 00;23;37;28
Andrew
That's right. Yeah, there is. And, you know, Peruvian, tourism, really keen on promoting northern Peru, the land of the left handers. Yeah. You know, you got the longest left hander in the world up there. Jicama. One child goes a long left Hannah. Pachamama. There's so many spots out there. So they've got a really good feature on this.
00;23;38;03 - 00;23;42;15
Tappa
They're going to be doing some promotions on that. So if anyone wants to now back down to Peru, that's probably.
00;23;42;15 - 00;23;43;06
Andrew
Yeah, that's.
00;23;43;06 - 00;23;44;11
Tappa
Nice to come check it out.
00;23;44;12 - 00;24;07;24
Andrew
Absolutely. From Peru will be having a display on another video and and letting people know, you know what Peru has to offer. Linda Banks, you know, she's a well known, longboard rider and then got involved with surfers. The climate one of the foundation members, a surface for climate. She's got her movie showing on the Monday night.
00;24;07;27 - 00;24;14;12
Andrew
We'll be doing a tour of the wildlife sanctuary at Currumbin on the Wednesday night. The Astra Lumina tour.
00;24;14;17 - 00;24;15;15
Tappa
Astra? Lumina.
00;24;15;15 - 00;24;20;00
Andrew
Yeah. And I put the lights on at night. Tony. It looks pretty good.
00;24;20;00 - 00;24;22;24
Tappa
Yeah, yeah, I need a Crocs day. Anxiety away from this.
00;24;22;26 - 00;24;54;22
Andrew
Well, I'm not sure it will list. The lights are on, so you. So you'll see them coming. If the if you'll see their eyes. That'll be really good. Yeah. It's not, you know, there's something going on and, keep everybody in a and, so, yeah, we're really hoping to get a good turnout. Like I said, just going to go on the site to register for a ticket and, get on it now, because the early birds, is a discount fair.
00;24;54;25 - 00;24;59;25
Tappa
And, and of course, like you said, you get get fed as well, so get fed.
00;24;59;25 - 00;25;03;07
Andrew
You get a bag of goodies, including a t shirt. So that's.
00;25;03;07 - 00;25;03;28
Tappa
Great.
00;25;04;00 - 00;25;36;07
Andrew
Yeah. All sorts of goodies. We've got a few magazines coming out that have written stories about, like local magazine. They've done a special feature surfing world's going to do a feature on it. Trax is doing a feature on it. So we've had really good support from the Australian surf media and, really good support from, you know, the likes of T cuz as a main tourism for the state of Queensland and experience Gold Coast is a tourism agency for Gold coast.
00;25;36;09 - 00;25;48;03
Andrew
MRO is a private sponsor Brazilian style imports. Yeah. To ski Troy down. You know, they've all sort of why it.
00;25;48;05 - 00;25;59;16
Tappa
Is great to see the local businesses put in, but might it's not as something when I was riding there now people might be watching this from anywhere in the world or in Australia. And, you've got an accommodation package as well.
00;25;59;18 - 00;26;03;10
Andrew
Yeah. Ridges. Gold Coast airport hotel, of course. Right next to the airport.
00;26;03;10 - 00;26;04;27
Tappa
Right next to the conference tent, right.
00;26;04;27 - 00;26;26;14
Andrew
Next to the conference. Southern Cross uni is just, next door. So it's really it's all in walking distance. Ridges have put out this really great night time package. I think it's $245 a night, including breakfast. And the breakfast is really good. I can vouch for the breakfasts, especially the mushroom and the omelet.
00;26;26;16 - 00;26;29;22
Tappa
Look at. Not like the Al Bali basher. I'm almost like.
00;26;29;24 - 00;26;43;05
Andrew
I'm not like the alcohol. It's. But, But. Yeah, they've put up a fabulous deal, and a lot of people are going to be staying there as well. So to be like an unofficial HQ and it's just a great hotel, it's.
00;26;43;05 - 00;26;47;07
Tappa
Great until you just basically walk out of your hotel into the conference.
00;26;47;07 - 00;26;55;05
Andrew
And what else is happening there is Steve, Phil is barefoot in Paradise surf. Exhibition.
00;26;55;10 - 00;26;57;09
Tappa
Oh, sorry. There's an exhibition in there as well.
00;26;57;09 - 00;27;18;11
Andrew
Yeah. Now, Steve Valere is. He's like the Gorgon of surfing, and it's. I mean, I know you, John Murray, on the other way. So he's got really close in that category too. But Stephenville is a little bit different. Again, he lived on Kauai for about 40 odd years. He lived in New Guinea. He's been to all the tropical places, been to South Africa.
00;27;18;17 - 00;27;34;03
Andrew
So he got inspired by all those trips. And, he's just an incredible oil painting artist. So he's going to be doing this great exhibition in ridges, and that'll be on for the two weeks of February while the conference is on.
00;27;34;05 - 00;27;43;01
Tappa
And there's other stuff happening around the place as well, besides a collective way you have in the party, or was it mostly all centered on Southern Cross?
00;27;43;03 - 00;28;08;21
Andrew
So Southern Cross is the the main venue for the conference from Monday to Thursday. Monday night, just not there's functions going on there once and, yeah, sure. Lumina at Cromwell Wildlife Sanctuary, the Senate is the collective for the finale party. But like I said, with the exhibition that Steve's doing, that's going to be on for two weeks in there.
00;28;08;21 - 00;28;12;06
Andrew
So it'll be it'll be amazing to see.
00;28;12;09 - 00;28;21;04
Tappa
Well worth checking out, mate. So once again, before we wrap up, mate, I think we need to tell people once again, how do you get the tickets again? Go to
