The second giant boring machine building HS2 under the Chiltern Hills has broken through the tunnel’s northern portal, completing a journey that began in June 2021.
The machine dug a tunnel 10 miles in length reaching depths of up to 80 metres. When HS2 is operational, trains will travel through the tunnel at speeds of up to 200mph, almost halving journey times between Britain’s two largest cities.

East Midlands Railway has announced a £60 million programme to refurbish its fleet of Class 360, Class 158 and Class 170 trains.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Angel Trains, Siemens, Porterbrook and Eversholt and leverages significant private sector investment.
All the work will be carried out in the UK, providing a significant boost to the supply chain.
Together with the introduction of the new Aurora Intercity trains, this will mean that all of EMR’s trains will either be replaced with new trains or refurbished.

Govia Thameslink Railway plans to extend the free use of an app to help blind an partially sighted passengers.
The app, called Aira, enables visually impaired customers to video call trained advisors who can guide them around stations on speakerphone.
The app is currently free to use at four stations and could be introduced at a further eight stations.
