Company D

What happened to Captain Alfred S. Merrill on a battlefield in Spotsylvania? For 160 years, his fate has remained a mystery. Until now. On September 17, Company D launches our debut episode, and we solve the Mystery of the Missing Captain.

What is Company D?

Company D brings the American Civil War to life through the eyes of citizen-soldiers. One Regiment. One Company. Countless stories of courage, sacrifice, and betrayal—exposing the human toll of a war that transformed the United States.

Captain Alfred S. Merrill vanished on a Civil War battlefield 163 years ago.
Some said he was shot and killed. Others swore he was captured—or captured and wounded.
Yet official records insist Merrill survived the war and went home. But his name is etched into the Bath, Maine Civil War Monument—among the dead.
The fact is—no one knows what happened to Captain Merrill.
Until now.
In the premiere of Company D, airing September 17, we solve the Mystery of the Missing Captain. We know what happened—and soon, you will too.
Along the way, you’ll meet Alfred Merrill himself: a singing Congregationalist from Maine, a Gold Rush prospector in California, a master carpenter of schooners and clippers—and the third captain of Company D of the Third Maine Infantry Regiment.
