Welcome back to the VivaLing podcast. Hereâs a question for you. Have you ever met someone for the first time and immediately thought, âI like this personâ or âIâm not sure about themâ? Before someone even says very much, we often create an opinion about them. This is called a first impression.
A first impression is the feeling or idea we have about someone when we meet them for the first time. Scientists believe that our brains make these judgments very quickly, sometimes within only a few seconds. However, the interesting question is:Â Can we trust our first impressions, or are they sometimes wrong?
Today, weâre going to explore how first impressions are created, why they can be inaccurate, and how we can make better connections with people.
So, how are first impressions formed?
When we meet someone new, we pay attention to many small details. For example, we notice their body language, their facial expressions, the way they speak, and whether they make eye contact.
Someone who smiles, listens carefully, and looks at us while speaking might seem more approachable. A person who speaks clearly and stands tall may appear confident.
However, our brains donât only look at facts. They also make quick decisions based on our past experiences. Sometimes, we make assumptions about people before we really know them.
So, first impressions can be useful, but they can also be wrong.
First impressions happen quickly, and they donât show the complete picture of a person.
For example, if someone is quiet during a meeting, we might think they are unfriendly. But, isnât it possible that they could simply be nervous or tired or simply having a difficult day. Someone who talks a lot might appear confident, whereas he or she may actually be nervous and trying to hide insecurity.
This is why it is important to avoid being biased. Being biased means having an unfair opinion about someone before knowing enough information.
Another problem is stereotypes. A stereotype is a common belief about a group of people. We might believe that a person from a certain country, age group, or profession will behave in a particular way. However, every person is different, so a stereotype is often too simple or not completely true.
A first impression can give us an idea about someone, but we should give people time to show who they really are.
And what about cultural differences in communication?
First impressions can also change depending on culture. Of course, the way people communicate is not the same everywhere in the world.
In some cultures, strong eye contact shows confidence and honesty. In other cultures, too much eye contact may be considered uncomfortable or disrespectful.
Similarly, some people believe that a firm handshake shows confidence, whereas other cultures may prefer a softer greeting or a simple bow.
Although these differences can sometimes cause misunderstandings, learning about other cultures can help us become more open-minded.
A person who seems less friendly at first might simply communicate differently from us.
So, considering all these things, how can we create a positive first impression?
First, try to be genuine. A genuine diamond is a diamond that is real, not manufactured in a laboratory, so a genuine person is someone who is honest and natural, rather than pretending to be someone else.
Second, show interest in the other person. Ask questions, listen carefully, and use positive body language. A smile, good eye contact, and an open posture can help people feel comfortable.
Finally, remember that a good relationship takes time. Although first impressions are important, they are only the beginning. The best way to understand someone is to communicate with them and learn more about their personality.
So in conclusion, first impressions are a natural part of human communication. They help us quickly understand the world around us, but they can also create mistakes.
Now, letâs see what you understood. I have five questions for you.
1. How quickly can people form a first impression?
A. After several hoursB. Within a few secondsC. After meeting someone several times
Of course, the answer is B â only a few seconds.
2. What does body language include?
A. The words we writeB. Our personal historyC. How we move, stand, and communicate without words
If you said C, you are right! Body language is just that â the message our body is saying by the way we move different body parts â a look, a smile, crossing your arms or legs.
3. Why can first impressions sometimes be wrong?
A. Because people always hide their true personalityB. Because we sometimes make assumptions without enough informationC. Because communication is not important
The answer, you know, is B . An assumption is believing something is real or true without evidence or proof.
4. What is an example of a cultural difference mentioned in the podcast?
A. Different meanings of eye contactB. Different opinions about foodC. Different types of clothing
Of course they are all cultural differences, but A, or eye contact, was mentioned.
5. What does it mean to be genuine?
A. To be friendlyB. To agree with everyoneC. To be honest and natural
A genuine person is honest and natural, and that does not always mean he or she is friendly. So, if you said C, well done.
Your homework: Think about a first impression that you had of someone, good or bad. What was it, and was it accurate? Tell it to your VivaLing coach or family member.
