Spartan spirit shines at annual Sparty watch ahead of rivalry football game against U of M. Although an autumn breeze and rain rushed through Michigan State's campus, it didn't stop members of the Spartan marching band and alumni from showing up for the annual Sparty Watch on Wednesday night, rekindling the spirit and tradition that defines rivalry week. Dating back to the nineteen seventies, Sparty Watch started as a way for members of the Spartan marching band and students to protect the statue from vandalism historically targeted by the University of Michigan's Wolverines by guarding the statue twenty four hours a day during rivalry week. Over the decades, the tradition has evolved into a celebration of Spartan pride and community spirit. Ronald McDonald House brings rival teams together for families in need.

Speaker 1:

Just three days removed from the biggest game of the year for MSU, even the staunchiest rivals are putting competition aside, at least for a moment, to help families in need. For the third consecutive year, the Ronald McDonald House of Mid Michigan and Ann Arbor are teaming up for the Battle of the Houses, a fundraising and volunteering competition centered on the Michigan and Michigan State rivalry. On Wednesday night, the two houses hosted a panel of former MSU and U of M football graduates, spanning seventy years of program history from 1954 to 2024. The Ronald McDonald House Charities provides housing and support for families of children with serious illnesses who are receiving care. Each house offers parents a place to stay near hospitals, helping to keep families united during stressful times.

Number one, MSU hockey heads up north to take on Northern Michigan. After knocking down a top ranked opponent, the Spartans are back on the road. Following a weekend sweep of last week's number one Boston University, highlighted by a four two opener and a four three overtime thriller, the newly ranked number one Michigan State hockey team will face an in state opponent, the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The series will take place on Friday, October 24 at 7PM eastern and Saturday, October 25 at 6PM eastern. Friday's game will be locally televised by WILX.

Speaker 1:

The two teams met last year in the Great Lakes Invitational with Michigan State earning a two o shutout off of goals from former forwards Isaac Howard and Carson Dauer. This season, Spartans are entering the series with a three game win streak while the Wildcats are looking to earn their first win. Michigan State women's basketball shines in exhibition matchup. In East Lansing, the number 23 ranked Michigan State women's basketball team held an exhibition game against in state foe Michigan Tech on Wednesday, October 22. After a successful second season under head coach Robin Fralick, the Spartans started off Fralick's third year with dominating a 101 to 58 exhibition victory.
