The Stand Outdoors

Mike and Dave discussed how to choose a comfortable, legal bow draw weight based on personal strength, recommending starting light and working up so you can draw, hold, and release smoothly. They compared mechanical broad-heads for longer shots and fixed heads for closer ranges.

Do you know Jesus?

What is The Stand Outdoors?

Our mission is to take a stand for Christ while hunting from tree stands and enjoying God’s great outdoors. On every adventure, if you look for it, God will teach you something about Himself. That’s what we want to share, a show about awesome hunting and an awesome creator who made it all possible.

Speaker 1 0:10
You know, Mike, I think back when I started with my Matthews bow, I was at 60 pound, draw weight. I don't know how old I was. I was in my mid to late 40s when I started bow hunting with my Matthews, and that that that particular draw weight worked for me. I was able to pull back, able to hold, able to release, you know, all the things that you kind of have to figure out that you can do based on your arm strength and all that. But today we're going to be talking about that, the bow weight, the bow draw weight. How you get there? What you do if there's situation where you can't pull 60 pounds you how do you know you have and you have a situation with your shoulder right now that you had to try to get to a point where you could do it, maybe you can't, and then you have to jump to the, what Mike calls the dreaded crossbow. No, I'm just kidding, the cheater. Yeah, the cheater, it's not, but, but yes, but if you're a traditional you know, bow hunter, the bow draw weight is really kind of important to figure out.

Speaker 2 1:17
Yeah, it is. And, and the way the bows even shoot today, the experts, I've been reading a lot of stuff, you know, since I did have my surgery last year, and shoulder surgery, shoulder surgery, and it was my left shoulder that holds the bow. And it's kind of weird. It's not the drawing when it's just but you still need that strength too, and it's amazing how fast you can lose that strength. I still haven't built it up, and it's been just about, I guess, about a year, close to a year now, and very hard to build that strength up, if you have. I had a lot of work done in there, so I was without my shoulder for quite a while. But how do you know what draw weight is good for you. There's a couple things that you can look at. First of all, what's the minimum weight in your state that you can hunt with? And I think in Pennsylvania, is right around 35 pounds. You can't hunt deer, you know, with less than 35 oh, I didn't know that, yeah, 35 is the lowest you can go, okay, and, and that's plenty of weight to kill a deer. Then you got to look at, okay, how do I know what my draw weight is? What can I pull back? And, of course, you know, you'll start out, you know, smaller, and then work your way up a little bit. But you want to be able to be able to pull that bow and shoot 20 to 30 times without any problem. And what distance Are you usually starting doesn't even matter. Doesn't matter. No, if you're the average shots 20 to 30 yards on a deer. So maybe start there. So yeah, just start at 20. You can start at 10, yeah, but because the draw is always going to be the same, and

Unknown Speaker 3:02
you can sometimes do that as archery shop, they have a shooting right?

Speaker 2 3:05
Yeah, I do and but you just need to know, you know, what is comfortable you're capable of pulling back. The next thing you want to try is pull it back and hold it for one minute and then release it gradually, as gradually as you can without, you know, throwing it in or making a lot of because that happens. It's happened to me many times, and I had to bring it back without shaking my bow all over the place and spooking the deer right and and if you're, if you're pulling too much draw weight, you won't be able to do that, and that's just going to mess up your hunting. It's not worth it.

Speaker 1 3:41
Whatever little noise that Buck's gonna hear, he's gonna hear it when you let movement, when you move that or try to release. Oh, yeah,

Speaker 2 3:48
okay, then sit down and pull the bow. If it's really hard for you to do that, because it is harder when you're sitting down, then it's probably not a good weight for you. You know, you want to either build up your muscles and keep trying that until you can do it, or, you know, go to a lower weight.

Speaker 1 4:07
I'll stop you right here. Before you, I hope you agree with this, but before you, you're doing all this. You've we're already assuming you found a place where you can go do it, or you found someone who knows how to adjust. Draw, draw weight on a bow, a friend, family member, your mom, your dad, whatever, knows how to do it, right? You have to kind of find that place where you can do this experiment. Because if you don't know much about bow hunting or bows in general, right? I don't know if you want to be fooling around with draw weight unless you know how to do it. So that's just advice.

Speaker 2 4:39
Yeah, you want to. You want to always be I mean, I do it. I'll go to my archery guy, you know, and, and, and you never want to draw a bow without an arrow in it. That's another thing. So, you know, dry fire. Yeah, you'll dry fire and bust your limbs or whatever, you know. So, yeah, figure out your drawway. And remember. Remember, you you can use, you know, 35 pounds, if that's all you can draw, and if you need to go lower than that, then you got to build up to that. So you just got to get out there and just keep practicing where it's more it's easier for you, or work out with some special exercise. You can look it up different ways of building your strength and your and your arm.

Speaker 1 5:20
Now, with 35 pound draw weight,

Speaker 2 5:24
do you have to make any adjustments with broad head you're using or the air of the bolt? Yeah, we're just gonna get into that. The Yeah, the the industry requirements for mechanical See, I like mechanical broad heads because I, if I see a big old bruiser out there, that's 40 or 50 yards, I want to be able to shoot. And of course, that means you got to practice, you know that I'll practice 60 yards, but I'll probably never shoot a deer at 60 yards, but it makes me really good at, you know, 40 and 50 or I can still hit in that pie plate, because you got to hit a deer and about a size of a small pie plate to really get them.

Speaker 1 6:05
And you want that, you want that opening mechanism happening. You want the cut that it makes, the slice that it makes through there, as opposed to a fixed broad head, right?

Speaker 2 6:16
Well, the problem with the fixed broad heads is they they'll pick up a lot of wind at those distances, and they won't be as accurate where the mechanicals are, like field points, you know, until they hit, until they hit, then they expand. Then you got to have, you know, the speed and the weight to go through them and or go in them far enough to kill and most of those are 100 grain. Most 100 125 Yeah. They can be whatever you want, whatever you feel, but usually 100 125 and and then you got to check your spine, you know, all of that stuff. But your, your your archery store will help you with, with all they have the charts and everything you can go by

Speaker 1 6:54
now, are you practicing with 100 grain practice tips? When you're doing the 35

Speaker 2 6:58
your field points, they have to be the same. Now, a lot of times your mechanicals, they'll come with practice points that look shaped a little bit like the but you know field points are good too. You know your field points just make sure they weigh the same, right there the 100 and grain, or 125 grain. Now, 45 to 50 pound minimum draw weight for mechanicals. So if you're shooting a 35 you don't want to use mechanical, and you're not going to want to shoot 50 yard shots anyway, so

Speaker 1 7:33
fixed, and then maybe closer shots. If you can do 35 you're saying fixed, broad head, and maybe consider 20 and 30 yard shots, yeah, because

Speaker 2 7:44
that's all you're going to be doing anyway, if you're shooting 35 pounds, you shouldn't use a mechanical at all. Even at 2030 yards, I would just use a fixed blade, you know. And I use, it's an old one. I use the Wasp boss, and it's a great blade, you know, it's a three blade and, and they're real good. And they don't triangle shape kind of thing. They don't plane, you know. And they really shoot pretty accurate out to 30 yards, you know, really nice. I use them on my crossbow too, yeah. So 40 to 50 pounds is about as low as you can go. Now, another thing to know about new bows. Apparently, they are making them so efficient that 15 years ago, if you were shooting, you know, if you were shooting 65 pounds, you can shoot a 50 pound bow today and get the same, you know, kinetic energy. They're so efficient technology, yeah, it is amazing. So you don't need 65 pounds. I used to shoot 68 you know, that was where I wanted to be, because that was and back then you might, you might have needed it because the bows weren't as efficient, you know.

Speaker 1 8:54
So trust me, don't try to be macho just because you can say, I can do 65 or 68, or whatever,

Speaker 2 9:02
because what, here's what I found, I can do it. You can be far more accurate with the with less poundage, and enjoy the hunt far more, because you're not straining you're not losing deer because they see you doing these sky these sky draws, where you put the have to put the bow way up in the air, you know, to pull it back. You're enjoying the hunt and shooting at 50 pounds. Make it comfortable. It's comfortable. And you know what? It doesn't matter if they're out there. You got to hit them in the right spot. You can kill a deer with a field point if you hit them, right? I mean, it's crazy. It's fun.

Unknown Speaker 9:42
You can actually throw the bolt and hit the No, I'm just kidding,

Speaker 2 9:46
but, but, yeah, you'll enjoy the hunt better. That's what I'm learning. And you'll, you know, forget about all the macho stuff. You know, maybe you got to get my age to do that. I don't know where you you don't care about that. You just want to enjoy the hunt, and you want to make a nice, clean kill. You want to be very accurate where you're hitting really, you know, small dots with your arrows at 2030, yards and and you'll be a lot happier as an Archer and a hunter. Bottom line, practice, practice, practice, too. Yeah. Remember two things. It's more about accuracy than draw weight. If you're struggling to move, you move, you won't enjoy the sport as much. Remember those two things

Speaker 1 10:40
we've been talking about bow, draw weights and as in every broadcast, in the standout doors.com we want to have a spiritual moment here where we can kind of tie together the topic of the show into some spiritual quick Bible study for you. Mike has that for you today.

Speaker 2 10:58
All right, yeah, the lesson for today, you know, we're talking about, you know, enjoying, you know, your hunt more by using lower weight and archery and, and it just made me think about just enjoying the journey of of the Christian life, you know. And, and there's only one way to do it. We got to just live without worry, basically. And that means we got to trust God. And I wanted, I got a couple verses here for you. Matthew 631, through 34 says, so do not worry, saying, What shall we eat, or What shall we drink, or What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be yours as well. And 34 says, Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. So living day by day, not worrying about tomorrow, which we can't do anything about anyway, but living each day. You know, I heard a guy say one time, and it was life changing for me. He says, live within the grace of just one day, and don't waste it on worrying about tomorrow, because God will only give you that. He says, The Evil of the day is enough, and I'm going to give you what you need every day. So live within that grace of just one day, and you know, you're going to find out joy will be a constant companion. And it's amazing how that works when we trust God like this. The other

Speaker 1 12:32
thing is too Mike is, if the weight is too heavy, you know, God says he'll take that weight off. If you give it to him, and he will take it and he will carry it for you, yeah, and that helps make the the walk a lot nicer and brighter and lighter. Oh, yeah. He says, My burden is light. So, you know, give it to him if you are wracked with worry and you are carrying these burdens, we know. We all do, and we all have Yes, and sometimes we continue to. Sometimes we carry this all our lives. We got to deal with it every day. And so it's, it's a matter of giving it to the Lord and saying, Can you carry this for me? Yeah, so that I can walk my Christian life and enjoy the glory of Your presence in my in my life, right?

Speaker 2 13:16
And get a lot done. You know that verse that you're talking about where he says, Take my yoke, for my yoke is easy, you know. And I saw, I saw my my father and mother in law had this big yoke on over their door. You know, it's huge. They had like a two story area there and and I noticed one was a real big yoke connected to a little yoke. And that's the way they were made, because that's how they would train the younger oxens, right? But, and so when you look at them, whatever they're doing, plow in the field, or whatever, you would see this big guy and this little guy on the same yoke. Well, the big guys doing all the work, you know? But it looked like, if you stood on the other side, you would see the little guy, and it looks like he's doing all the work, but it's really not him. It's the big guy, and that's that's why Jesus said, Take on my yoke, for it is easy. I'll do the work, and it'll become yours, and it'll be a part of your life when you just give me that yoke, when you take part in my yoke, like get in that yoke. Don't say, No, I'm going to do it myself. You know, I'm going to jump on the yoke with Jesus, because it's a lot easier. His burden is light, and that's what he's talking about. It's beautiful. Now Mark 1013, through 15, talks about, we've got to be converted and become like little children in order to enter the kingdom of God. Now, what is that talking about? Doesn't if I become like a child, it seemed like I'm defeating the purpose, you know. But what was Jesus talking about? He wasn't saying, become childish. He was becoming. He said, become childlike. And what that basically think about a child? He. They are totally dependent on their parents, you know, from so young, you know, till they're not a child anymore, and everywhere, what they eat, drink, what they wear, everything.

Speaker 1 15:11
And if you're if your parents say the stove is hot, it's hot, yeah, you touch it, right? They're trying to they're helping you. They say the water is cold. It's cold, right?

Speaker 2 15:22
And it's amazing how you can take a little child, you know, and put them up on a high platform and say, jump in my hands, yeah, and they'll just fall right in your hands, even though they don't care, they just totally trust, you know, faith in the West, in the Western world, I think we need to change our word, instead of saying, believe in Jesus. Because believe is like an intellectual ascent to some knowledge, you know. But really, when the Bible talks about believe, it means trust, to trust in Him. That means to lean on Him and trust in Him. And that what that he's God.

Unknown Speaker 15:56
Remember that old Him, trust and obey. There's no happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Unknown Speaker 16:03
They were corny, but they were good.

Speaker 1 16:04
They were spot on. Let me tell you, it goes right with your message this morning. Find happiness in your walk with the Lord. Trust and obey. But there's no other way but don't sing it, please.

Speaker 2 16:16
Yeah, trust in a heavenly Father. Just you got to do it each day. Enter into that grace that the Lord has for you each day and live within that grace for one day. Don't waste it on tomorrow's worries or whatever, but live, use that grace and just live one day at a time, and God will take care of you step by step, moment by moment.
