What type of rest do we yearn for on Shabbat? How do we frame our mindset during the week to prepare for Shabbat and how can we transform our Shabbat experience? Using the teachings of Rabbi Yaakov Meir Shechter, a leading Breslov Rabbi, in his sefer Yom Machmadim, we build tools towards enhancing our ability to connect to the day of rest.
Okay, it's a זמן, it's all, everything is new. Want to teach you a new ניגון. You see a lot of, he's, התחדשות, a lot of renewal, even though we, some of us have been sitting around this table and you know, it may seem like, okay, we're just going back to what was. Everything, אלול תשפ"ה, everything is brand new.
And it's only going to get more and more new. And our התחדשות is essential. Our sense of renewal is essential. So this is a little, is a new ניגון to help us with tuning into a newness.

Welcome back everyone. Alright חברה, let's get right to it. We have a, we have a זכות to learn today something.
I have pages for those that don't have in the ספר, דף רנ"ד. Today we're learning something where there's a kiss, there's a wink from above because even though this has nothing to do, this is not necessarily anything to do with אלול, ראש השנה, יום כיפור, this happens to us all the time. There's an important ענין that while we're in the month of אלול to always not just show up כאילו first time to the מחזור ערב ראש השנה, but it's to start to look into the, into the מחזור already now. And there's a דיוק, there's a תפילה here, there's an amazing, amazing piece here where it's gonna help us really prepare for the right, for the right zone of ראש השנה, יום כיפור, באין מליץ יושר מול מגיד פשע.
I grew up, there's a beautiful, I think it was a Mordechai Ben David song, was it? My father used to sing it always. It was a very special ניגון. And we'll see it in here.
And we have a big, I could continue with with הקדמות, הקדמות, הקדמות on the זכות that we have. I want to say תודה שה', thank you, הקדוש ברוך הוא, so much. We have another זמן, another moment, another Friday. Who knows if we have this זמן? We have a Friday.
We have a Friday morning to sit together and learn and get ready for שבת, that שבת is going to be a pretty different, a little bit of a wild שבת. We have the honor of hosting tonight the ambassador. He's going to be in שול tonight. Ambassador Huckabee.
He's going to be in שול tonight. And it's gonna, there's, there's this, like we said last week, there's a bunch of surprises. This was one of them, where you couldn't really, you know, blast it out on emails and everything, but who knows what השם has in store for us? But right now we know we have Friday morning, and we have, we have this. Now, and that we're in the זמירות of שבת.
This זמר, we would for, for the last like month or two before we took a break, we were learning כה ריבון. We were going through כה ריבון every stanza of כה ריבון ending with למקדשך תוב ולקודש קודשים. There's a זמר that less people sing. They sing, they sing it a lot in the, in the
Who sings, who grew up singing this ניגון? You sing, not, not too, later on you started singing that ניגון. When you were eleven you weren't singing It's an amazing, amazing ניגון.
It's amazing words written by the אבן עזרא. His, his ראשי תיבות are in the every stanza. You see over here, אברהם.
And the next זמר we're going to be learning is from רב Biderman, which is very, very special. So, this ניגון, צמה נפשי לאלוקים לקל חי, there's one one of the stanzas that I wanted to I wanted us to see. If you look in the ספר that you have, רנ"ב, so on the bottom, the bottom paragraph is הבדיל ניני תם, חוקים להורותם, אשר יעשה אותם האדם וחי, ליבי ובשרי ירננו לקל חי. מיכאל שפירא has a gorgeous ניגון to these words that in the next album, his his next album of ניגונים is coming out this month.
And my brother sings this ניגון on the on that album. My brother will be with us next Just wanted to say it. Okay, so הבדיל ניני תם, that הקדוש ברוך הוא, you you separated the צאצאים, the נינים, the great grandchildren of תם.
Who's who's the Who's תם? We're all children of תם. But but in this reference over here, who's תם? By giving us חוקים.
And the key word here is you gave us חוקים להורותם, to teach us what to do, to teach us the way, אשר יעשה אותם האדם וחי. And when a person דוקא is holding on to keeping חוקים, what do we know about a חק? What's the עניין of a חק? I don't understand it. I don't feel it necessarily. I'm not so plugged in to the what my intellectual faculties usually demand in order to do something.
And then when you do that, you're ממש alive. That's considered to be ממש alive. So now, we're going to see רב Biderman's פירוש on this, on this beautiful few words.
We're on רנ"ד. בדרך you see on the bottom. בדרך רמז יש לפרש הבדיל ניני תם.
How are we going to understand this? That God separated, he put aside the great grandchildren of the תם, of יעקב אבינו. הקדוש ברוך הוא הבדיל את צאצאי בני יעקב, הנקראים תם, כדכתיב יעקב איש תם, משאר האומות, from all other nations of the world. How did God distinguish between us and all nations of the world? A lot of people want to say we're distinguished by being chosen.
All those things are are true. But on a מעשה level, on an עבודה level, what's the where does our distinction? How are we differentiated from everyone? What is a חק?
רבונו של עולם, you put us through so many ניסיונות, through so many trials and tribulations. I know no one here in this room has ever had this problem, but sometimes people go through ניסיונות and they wonder why me. Again, not in this room, because everyone here is a מקבל everything perfectly without any issues whatsoever, נכון? Totally.
Zero resistance, you know. But there's an עניין that, huh? Starting now. Starting this second.
But there's an עניין that people go through a חק. A חק over here, he's saying means actually a ניסיון. I don't even under, there's no I don't even have a טעם in this ניסיון. What does this test have to even do with me? What is that?
השם, don't you want me to have this great light to just serve you from a place of feeling it, understanding it, connecting? Isn't, wouldn't that be better? Wouldn't that be deeper? Wouldn't it wouldn't it last longer? Ah. אך האמת, that's not a יידישע קאפ. The truth is what?
But when a person does what he has to do ברוחניות ובגשמיות, spiritually and physically, he feel alive כשיתגבר על הניסיונות, when he overcomes his trials. Now, this is something we wish was not the, we don't really wish, but we think we'd rather it not to be like this. We think we'd rather it to be, השם, I'm going to feel alive when I don't have tests, because then I could just sit back and learn and דאווענען and give צדקה. You'll see.
that's our mind tells us, you'll see, you're going to have such a געשמאק איד. The one that doesn't have to constantly be burdened by tests, you'll see a different איד. You'll see this guy that's just like, he's just flying, he's good, he's in a good place, healthy place. These ניסיונות, השם, who wins from this? That that's what we say.
I mean, we don't maybe verbally say it, but we do say it. You don't even realize what kind of person you'd have if it wasn't for these ניסיונות. Nah.
Our extent of feeling alive is based on going through the ניסיון. That's the extent of how we feel alive. Now you don't חלילה wish this on anyone on their birthdays. Go around on someone's birthday for a bringing everyone wants to give a ברכה, and one guy says, I want to give you a ברכה to ממש be alive, and we learned the only way that you could be alive is if השם sends test after test after test.
It's not something that you have to bench someone with. It's going to happen anyway. It's going to happen anyway.
It's already, how many days are we into אלול right now? Five. Anyone have any ניסיונות since ראש חודש אלול? So, it's gonna happen anyway. The only thing is do you remember This is what the whole זאך is dependent on.
Next page. מליצה ישרה אמרו בלשון הפיוט and this is what it says ראש השנה יום כיפור. This is where the באין מליץ יושר we were talking about before.
So it's בכלל, it's a good עניין to understand what we're saying in the מחזור. There is an עניין to, you will, you you understand like… Huh? To understand. Well, there's an עניין to understand what you're saying בכלל. Definitely during the מחזור during ראש השנה יום כיפור.
מה זה אומר באין מליץ יושר that there's no what? What's מליץ יושר because we always say נשמה should have an עליה, there should be a מליץ יושר on כלל ישראל, what do these words mean? What does מליץ יושר mean? Like a representative to… a good advocate. A good advocate. A good advocate.
באין מליץ יושר, when there's no good advocate, מול מגיד פשע, when there's a prosecutor standing right there saying they did this wrong, this wrong, this wrong.
We, we've we're a people that go through ניסיונות all the time, and and we do we do a pretty good job. Even when we don't understand why we have to go through what we have to go through. Is this דווקא יעקב because יעקב requested to sit? To sit, like he wants to live simple.
Yeah. He started off like that. He started off like… You know, יעקב איש תם in the beginning and then later, later, later on it's like pretty crazy. וישלח and then וישב, yeah.
So there's… is he working? Huh? He worked. יעקב worked. That that's the point.
Meaning to say like… But יעקב אבינו could have stopped and he could have asked רבונו של עולם, look how much I gave up, look how much I sacrificed, and now after those initial seven years of working for my soulmate. What a ניסיון. This relationship is not adding up. I can't, I don't understand at all why I have to go through this.
What does what ends up happening? He continues to work. …because חוקים להורותם. When he first meets פרעה, it says that he said that his days were מעט ורעים, like… He wanted to sit and relax, but… I mean you're taking this to be a, he stopped with יעקב אבינו but it's okay, we can we can continue with יעקב אבינו for a few more minutes.
And then we say השם remember חוק, remember that relationship we have, and then let's go to צדק ומשפט. So what does this mean? שבשעה, where are we in the one, two, three, four, five, fifth line.
When the hand of the prosecutor is on top There is no good advocate, a gentle advocate, a holy advocate on behalf of us. So we're asking you one thing.
I wasn't feeling it at all one morning, but I know that a איד gets up and goes to שול in the morning.
Remember that. I wasn't feeling a billion things. I still… וממילא, what will happen from that kind of relationship if you remember all the חוקים?
Give us a good judgment even if it has no good reason. Even if it has no good reason. Just like I did a lot of good things without tasting any good reason. I'm asking you.
וכדרכך לגמול במידה כנגד מידה, ריבונו של עולם, this מידה כנגד מידה dance going on, I'm asking you also to please act with me the same way that if you could look at those moments in life that I came towards you, even when I completely didn't understand why I have to go through what I'm going through. So now let's explain it.
Why did you separate us and differentiate us? All of us אין א קלך מן הטעם, חוקים להורותם. So we do what we have to do and feel alive.
שעל ידי זה, not just feel alive, but to actually stay alive. שעל ידי זה יזכה that through this I merit שיצא דינו לצדק, גם בלא טעם ושלא כפי הראוי לו.חבר'ה, it's יום הדין in a few weeks. Petrifying to think about it. It's יום הדין in a few weeks.
As much as we want to give תורות that sweeten a little bit of the intensity of the moment, there's ספרים of חיים and there's ספרים of מתים. There are people that are not in this room right now learning with us, that learned with us around this time last year, that are not alive. For whatever the reasons were, חוק, we don't understand this. Last year, they weren't inscribed in the book of physical life.We we have to approach this with our eyes wide open, like we spoke about last week in שול, like fish that never close their eyes because they don't have any eyelids.
And we have to look in the in the heart of the issue and say, how am I going to achieve life? Not just to feel alive, but to stay alive. Don't go in your mind to the Bee Gees. Stay over here with me. I see where you're going.
To ממש not just feel alive, but to stay alive by asking the ריבונו של עולם, תגיד ליעקב דבר חוק ומשפט. Let's talk about all those times I pushed myself. Maybe I wasn't a צדיק. Maybe I didn't excel.
But you know what? I stayed in the fold. I stayed in the fold. Even especially when I didn't understand it.
איי, וצדקנו במשפט, and therefore השם, don't just, I'm asking for the basics to stay alive. That's what the אבן עזרא is saying in this פיוט, צמאה נפשי.Maybe we could ask השם also, even for the מצוות that we understand the reason.
Maybe we could ask השם even for the מצוות that we understand the טעם for, but the מצוות that we do בלי טעם, the ones we do with… …just go through the boxes.
Usually we knock, usually we we knock the checking boxes. In אלול, we're like, listen, let's grant, let's let's grab any brownie point we can. We're like, even the checking boxes, it falls into the category, you're right, of חוקים, of חוקים להורותם. Very good.
But I won't let you get away with that תורה in תשרי and חשון, כסלו, טבת. אלול, we have to grab on to any any זכות we have. Now, he continues over here, just one more little piece here. So now the של"ה.
Everyone should have, you know what you should have, we have always for years, the של"ה is by our שבת table. It's always good to have the של"ה by the שבת table because the של"ה goes through every פרשה, the מצוות and הלכות that are שייך to that פרשה. The של"ה's work is, we should have בעזרת השם the opportunity to spend a whole year just learning the של"ה הקדוש. So the של"ה הקדוש says like this, מבאר מקרא שנאמר, אשר יעשה אותם האדם וחי בהם.
This is a פסוק in ספר ויקרא. Now, Rabbi Perlman is kind of going to the more, more feeling alive side of this teaching. That was staying alive, now we're talking about the feeling alive.
He's saying a person should do מצוות with חיות, feeling it. When you feel something, you do it right away and you don't do it שלעפצעך. You know what I mean.
שלעפּציק in English? Huh? Lazily. Lazily. Lackadaisically. Whatever you want to say.
I'm gonna stick with שלעפּציק, right? And you know, it's interesting, anyone that's learned חובות התלמידים, חובות התלמידים, the פיאסצנה רב is harping on, and he's speaking to youth there, right? And he's harping on this מידה over and over and over again, that the key to a person's success is discovering within them the ability to overcome this מידה of עצלות. And of course in מסילת ישרים, you know, the מידה of זריזות, with the מידה of doing things fast, אברהם אבינו, וישכם בבוקר.
All of our גדולים that we learn from had this מידה of not falling into שלעפּציק.כי כשיש באדם רוח עצלות ועצבות, and I'm sure some of you could relate to this. When a person has within them this רוח of שלעפּציק, of עצלות, of laziness, ועצבות, which is correlated always to sadness, הרי כל איבריו כבדים. You feel the weight. You feel heavy.
Everything feels heavy.
Listen to this beautiful חידוש he has here. רש"י says in ברכות, there's a סוגיא there על הדברים הנאמרים בכוס של ברכה. What are the few of the the things that, you know, כוס של ברכה means the כוס that we use when we have to use, when we do it, when we bench, when we do קידוש, when we מקדש people, a couple, a כוס של ברכה. What are one of the things that the, that the wine has to be made out of? So it says over here, אחד מהן חי.
What does that mean living, living wine, living fluid? What does that mean? רש"י continues there and he says, it's got to be fresh. It can't be something that, what it means is you can't take wine and then pour it into something that already has water or another mixture and then mix it together and then כוס של, The wine will also turn into like a vinegar almost. לגמרי, especially, yeah, especially with that.
It's got to be in its original format, right? That it's healthy wine, and like you're saying, Not contaminated. Not contaminated.
Thank you. This is all one matter. The cup, or the contents of the cup? No, the contents of the cup.
What's in the, what's in the ברכה. The way we keep תורה has to be with these words of וחי בהם, מתוך חיות והתחדשות, by feeling alive, by feeling new, by feeling renewed and rejuvenated, ולא כדבר שאין בו טעם ורצון, and not like something that doesn't have any taste or will or wanting to be here, or wanting to do what I'm going to do.
The חוקים we said before is, hey, whether you like it or not, you want to be here? You're feeling it? You still do it. That's אלף. בית over here is saying ווייטער, even much more. I have to, I have to do what I'm doing as if when you look at me, you're like, this guy wants to be here.My שבת table must be a שבת table, don't, I'm not saying about the children, but ourselves, that our children look at us and say, they, they want to be here.
There's a big עניין. Children can sense, a child could see if the parent is doing their שבת table על פי חוק because they have to, versus גוואלד, they want to be here. Now we, we've learned this many times over the years, that a child's ability to look at their parents and say, don't, don't, I'm not going to say, right? Don't me. I know you don't want to be here.
הגדה, we learned this on ליל סדר, רב קלוגר. רב קלוגר is showing us, he's saying, it's the night where you show your children how much you actually want to be here. That that was the מאמר we were learning. But it's the same thing over here.
A child could see if you want this, if you feel מתחדש by this or not. And that's a תפילה, I'm telling you חבר'ה, to דאווענען for. If there's one, like, maybe tonight, if there's one תפילה to be focused on, starting by מנחה already, is to go into that zone of השם, please when my children see me go to the קידוש cup, when they see me בענטשן them, or whatever it is, they see someone that that ממש wants to be here. Not just is doing 'cause it's right, but that wants to be here.
That's a big עניין. Again, I'm so happy that we could, we're back learning and saying names, the name dropping we just did right now. The בעל שם טוב, as brought down by רב צדוק in פרי צדיק, שהיה מכנה חוזק הישראליות בימי הנעורים.
What was the בעל שם טוב jealous of or not, I don't want to say jealous, but more envious of? What was the בעל שם טוב's in of looking of when he would when he would see youth or he would think about his own youth? What would he, what would he be most jealous of? Physically, the older we get, the less passionate we kind of feel about things. Although, this place is kind of defies logic because on Sunday morning, there's going to be a סיום done by someone who did a סיום on סנהדרין just a few weeks ago, and he's doing a סיום on another מסכתא this coming Sunday morning. And he's 87. So, and that's Nate.
We have people around us that have this חוזק הנעורים, maybe not physically, but definitely that with the קישקעס to be open to learn and everything. We have that around us. I give us a ברכה and bless me back to have that all the days of our lives.
If we have that, we have everything and we have everything in the world. That's what he says the בעל שם טוב was מכנה of, כלומר, שהשתוקק לכוח שיש לצעירי הצאן. When he would see youngsters, right? The בעל שם טוב, how old is, how old was the בעל שם טוב when he was נפטר? 62, right? Born in 1698, he was נפטר 1760. 62.
I'm not sure at what age that this is referring to, but that he would see younger people and be like, oh, that, that, that עניין of like, you know, that's what, that's what he wanted. That's what he, that's what he was connected to. That they had the ability to constantly be מתחדש all the time when it came to serving השם.
We have a זכותו of children name drop here, the זכותו של רבי. This is what the אבני נזר says, like this, ובלשונו הטהור, next page.
All the, all the pain, all the troubles that יידן have wherever they are in the world, הוא הכל בשביל שלומדים הגמרא כאדם שרוצה לישון, שלעפטק. What is he saying? I mean this is, this is pretty far out. He's saying when you see a ייד that suffers somewhere in the world, it's because when יידן are learning גמרא, they're, like we said, שלעפט זיך, שלופעדיק.
They're, they're doing it. They're doing it. So they're already, they're in the game. But the just being in the game is not enough for the bigger picture.
It's got to be בחיוּת. It's got to be with life, with strength, with strength. ואם היה העולם מציית לו ולמדו הגמרא עם חיוּת, and they would learn גמרא with fire, with vitality, היה הוא ערב בדבר שלא יחסר לשום ישראל פרנסה. He would be a guarantor that no ייד'לה would lack any פרנסה whatsoever.
I want to share with you a conversation I had with someone over the summer. He said, he said, \"Ah, רב שלמה, I feel so bad for you.\" I love when those, just בכלל, that's like a great opener, right? Feel so bad for you. He said, \"Why?\" He's like, \"Because you probably didn't realize but when you were starting everything here, like, there was a lot of התלהבות but at the end of the day, especially at this שלב in life, you're basically stuck with a bunch of חבר'ה that are already middle-aged, and they're more or less formed, and you, what are you going to get, what's the greatest you could feel and get from חבר'ה that are already in this age group and not younger in terms of like feeling like really חזק and seeing changes in yourself and others? Because at this age, usually what you see is what you get. Rarely is it someone that you're going to be like, \"Oh, this חבר'ה have the real, you know, flipping out,\" or whatever it is.
So I said, \"You're right. That's why we started מכון זיו מוריה." It's to feel young. I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
You're looking at me like, are you... That's not true. That's not the reason. I'm just saying like, that's also there.
But I think that that's why the, that's the יסוד החסידות, the יסוד of חסידות. And everyone that wants to talk about פנימיות התורה, it's basically to address this עניין of וחי בהם, to feel the חיוּת. It doesn't matter what my age is, it's true. Naturally, physically, physiologically, of course, that that that is more how things go.
You know, when we're younger and we have less responsibilities... is we're more prone to like be open without even subconsciously to big change, like big, I don't want to say change, big growth. Big growth. And the older we get, the more set we are in our ways.
But I called that person out. I said, how many times have you spent שבת by us? He said, I've been there a few times. I said, let me ask you a question. Do you do you have, and I'm not going to tell you who it is.
Do you have any faces that you remember that you saw in the crowd? And he started telling me certain people. I said, אני ערב. I'm a guarantor that the person you saw looked nothing like this just a few years ago. And I'm a guarantor to be מקבל on myself that when you look at me in a few years, בעזרת השם, with the mercy of השם, I won't look like this either. If we could nip this, if we could defy this, you know, this this כאילו, this השקפה of, listen, חבר'ה, by 38, maybe 41, what you see is what you get?
Dovid, you look exactly the same for the last 35 years, Mr. Rich. We're we're so, you see, we laugh at it because it, בעזרת השם, we're we're going to defy that. We're going to we're going to continue to look that in the face and say, לאו דווקא. How?
Because our relationship with חוקים, our relationship with going through ניסיונות, our relationship with everything that we have with the רבונו של עולם is leading us on a path that we could look it in the eye and say, מה שהיה הוא לא בהכרח מה שיהיה, no matter what. As long as what, we keep on pounding ourselves with לימוד, we keep on pounding ourselves with שיחת חברים, with opening our hearts, with wanting to grow, and not believing in the myth that says what what what you see is what you get.Last paragraph. What else is included in the statement of וחי בהם?
That Torah and מצוות should be my actual source of life. Not just a thing that I partake in when I feel good about myself or when I'm in deep trouble, then I'll run to שול. But that the source of my existence is יידישקייט, is the Torah.
Just like you wouldn't take a spoon full of something and shove it into your ear because you know that's not where it goes. What is it dependent on? The mouth. That's the same the same התייחסות, that's the same way that I have to be with Torah, is to understand it needs to go inside.
It needs to be part of me, for real. I'll never forget your commandments. And why don't I ever forget the Torah? 'כי בם חייתני'. Because once I tasted the source of my life, I could never forget what the source of my life is.
רב שלמה used to say this quite often. He used to say the following statement. He used to say, anyone that's ever tasted real learning knows that there's nothing else. He used to say this a lot.
Anyone that's ever tasted real learning, like, you know, the worlds where he came from, you know, תורה ודעת, Lakewood, and דווקא those years, I'm saying, because those were the years where the learning was, you know, hours and hours and hours. Anyone that's tasted real learning knows that that's the מקור החיות. שהוא מכיר שהתורה היא חיותו, because that person knows that the Torah is what keeps him alive. So I, I, I'm just, you know, hoping and דאווענען-ing that בעזרת השם these words sink in really deep inside, and that all of us are not just זוכה to to stay alive, but to but to feel alive.
If you never said this זמר before, you know, if you and you want a good ניגון to it, I could send you before שבת, if you ask me nicely, I'll send you a great ניגון. Yes, please, just remind me in a text. And we should be זוכה to live a life of not just, you know, having to go through trials and tribulations and and making it making it through alive, but at a certain point in our אלול to realize, 'כי לעולם לא אשכח פקודיך, כי בם חייתני'. Without this, I got nothing.
I got nothing. nothing and I wouldn't want it any any other way. So חברה, again, שבת בעזרת השם strong for all of us. We're going to we're going to now we're going back to our weekly learning this Monday morning for the men this Monday morning, and then Wednesday, and then we're back on the the circuit בעזרת השם.
