Core Insights with Brian Brandt

You know, some of the best leaders in East Texas almost weren't East Texas leaders at all — they had one foot out the door, eyeing Dallas or somewhere bigger, convinced that's where real opportunity lived. In this episode of Core Insights with Brian Brandt, I want to talk directly to the Tyler and East Texas business owners, nonprofit directors, and emerging leaders who are wrestling with that same pull.

Here's what I've learned in nearly 30 years of calling Tyler home: you don't have to leave to grow. Some of the most meaningful leadership development happening anywhere in the country is happening right here — through Leadership Tyler, through Leadership Lindale, and through the everyday choice to invest in the people around you instead of chasing the next city.

In this episode I'll walk you through why so many organizations lose their best people (hint: it's usually a failure to develop them, not a lack of talent), how homegrown leadership retention actually works, and how the skills we build as leaders snowball into better spouses, parents, and community members. We'll get into the "accidental manager" problem, the impact mindset, and why I believe you can absolutely thrive right where you're planted.

If you're ready to grow your leadership impact locally — with someone who genuinely understands this community — I'd love to come alongside you. Reach me at Core Insights in Tyler, Texas: call (903) 534-1525, email brian@coreinsightsleadership.com, or visit https://www.CoreInsightsLeadership.com. Let's leave East Texas better than we found it. It's just a pleasure to serve.

What is Core Insights with Brian Brandt?

Core Insights with Brian Brandt is amazing!

Welcome to Core Insights with Brian Brandt. I'm Brian, and today I want to talk about a question I hear more than you might think out here in East Texas.

You know, if you build leaders long enough in a town like Tyler, you start to notice a pattern. The most talented people, the ones with real potential, they hit a certain point and they start looking toward Dallas.

It makes sense on paper. Bigger companies, bigger titles, bigger salaries, and this quiet belief that the real opportunities live somewhere else, somewhere with a taller skyline. I get it, because I've watched a lot of gifted East Texans wrestle with that exact pull.

Here's what usually happens, and I want you to see yourself in this if it fits. A great individual contributor gets noticed, does excellent work, and then feels like they've hit a ceiling because nobody around them is investing in their growth.

They don't actually want to leave. They love their church, their kids' school, the fact that they can grab barbecue at Stanley's on a Tuesday and see three people they know. What they want is to feel like they're becoming something more.

And that's the part that breaks my heart a little, because so often it isn't really about Dallas at all. It's about development, and a leader who feels stuck will chase growth wherever they think it lives, even if home was the better place all along.

I've lived in Tyler for nearly thirty years now, and I've spent about twenty of them involved with Leadership Tyler, plus helping found Leadership Lindale. So I've had a front-row seat to what happens when we decide, as a community, to grow our own people instead of letting them slip away.

Here's the truth I want you to hold onto. People rarely leave a place because the place is too small. They leave because they stopped growing, and nobody gave them a reason or a path to stay and get better.

I fundamentally believe most people get promoted into leadership before they're ready. They're wonderful at the actual work, so we hand them a team, we give them zero leadership development, and then we act surprised when they struggle.

So they start to think the problem is the ceiling in East Texas, when the real problem is that no one ever built the staircase. That's not a Dallas problem. That's a development problem, and development can happen anywhere, including right here at home.

So let me talk to you directly, whether you own a business, run a nonprofit, or you're the emerging leader feeling that itch to leave. The retention conversation isn't about locking people in. It's about growing them up.

When you invest in someone's leadership, their communication, their conflict skills, their ability to actually hold a room, something wonderful happens. They don't just get better at work. Those skills snowball into their marriage, their parenting, their community, and suddenly home isn't the place holding them back, it's the place lifting them up.

That's the whole reason I do what I do. I want to leave every business, every community, and every person I serve better than I found them, and out here that means building homegrown leaders who have every reason to stay and thrive.

And I'll be honest with you, because that's how I try to lead. I'd rather tell you what you need to know than what you want to hear. If you're losing good people to Dallas, the question isn't how do I compete on salary, the question is how am I developing the leaders I already have.

Because here's a phrase I come back to all the time. Diversify to survive, specialize to thrive. Surviving is keeping the seat filled, but thriving is when your people are growing so much they can't imagine being anywhere else.

I've built leaders across East Texas for two decades, and I promise you, the talent is already here. The refuge, the lakes, the small-town Friday nights, this place is worth staying for, but people have to feel like they're becoming their best selves right where they are.

So if you're watching a great one start to look toward the interstate, don't wait until they've packed the car. Let's have a real conversation about developing your people before you lose them, because so often the leader who almost left just needed someone to invest in them staying.

If that's stirring something in you, I'd love to talk. You can find me at Core Insights Leadership dot com, or reach me by email at brian at Core Insights Leadership dot com.

And if you'd rather just pick up the phone and talk it through, call me at nine zero three, five three four, one five two five. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me today, now go lead well, and leave things better than you found them.
