[00:00:00] Pia: Warren Bennis a leading scholar and a key light in building effective organizations over this century once said Creating a compelling vision, one that takes people to a new place, and then translate that vision into reality. Once you have clarity on your why or purpose, the next step is to craft the vision of the destination that you are seeking. I'm Pia.

[00:00:27] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connects. as we all know, vision statements can easily misunderstood. They can be too long. They can be forgotten the moment you create them. Or look really good on the wall of your office, but actually don't connect the reality of the day-to-day work. This is a huge missed opportunity for you and your leadership.

[00:00:48] There's an old African proverb that goes, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. It's your vision that could make the difference between a solitary journey and a journey with your team.

[00:01:02] Pia: That's absolutely true and a vision stimulates change progress and aligns everyone in the organization towards a common direction. It acts as a clear catalyst for team spirit. Jim Collins wrote a bit of a Bible on this topic, and it is absolutely, definitely worth a read. It's called Good to Great. He tells us that a vision needs to be bold, daring, and a captivating statement of aspiration. It's audacious, but also achievable and not an impossible dream, and it applies to the whole organization.

[00:01:38] Dan: And really importantly, it gives everyone on the team a clear finish line so that whether that's the organization or the team, it knows when it has achieved that vision. For example, here is Tesla's vision. Create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world's transition to electric vehicles.

[00:01:59] Pia: Your organization may already have a compelling vision, but how are you linking it to the actions of your team? How will you know when you've got there? And what are the measures? A useful exercise is to bring the team together and ask them three questions. What are we world's best at? What drives our economic engine that is, it helps us to run as a business? And what are we deeply passionate about?

[00:02:25] Dan: The overlap of these three key questions starts to form the key pillars of your vision. So clump them together as bullet points and start to create a sentence that really captures all three. You could start with the date, for example, by 2026, we will, and then start, start to describe the future state that you'll be in.

[00:02:44] Pia: If you use words like best and biggest, then remember they will need to be quantified and measured, and then we'll cover this in the next Connects next week. Also, remember the connect outside in, think from the outside and about the impact you have on the customers you serve. So an example of this could be Become the leading choice in sport shoes by achieving 70% share of the athletic market by 2028. It's specific, it's measurable and it's aspirational.

[00:03:16] Dan: So bring your team together, use the show notes to get yourself some inspiration and to help you and work out with your team what your light on the hill is going to be.

[00:03:28] Pia: Far too often we just get bogged down in the detail. Our Squadify data tells us that team members are really wanting to have clarity of vision in order to help make their work feel meaningful. So this is an all important leadership task to undertake. get the creative juices flowing, and together you will go far. See you next week to look at how to craft these measures that will guide you along the way to your vision.
