February is a heart health month. This is a great time to talk about heart disease, to raise awareness and discuss the factors that cause this deadly condition. Heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the United States. Approximately one in three Americans die from heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, the total direct medical cost of heart disease are approximately $351 billion and it's projected to increase to $749 billion in 2035. Heart disease can happen to anyone and it can happen at any age. Although it's common in the elderly population, we are seeing individuals in their early 20s with heart disease and die from it. Common causes of heart disease are modifiable. These include obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, consumption of unhealthy diet, and lack of physical activity.
