IN CAMPUS NEWS,
Fellow badger and Wisconsin Women’s Hockey player Laila Edwards and Kirsten Simms score their first Olympic goals in today’s game against Canada. Simm’s goal occurred in a scramble at the net, with her pushing the puck under the goalie’s leg. With a little over 8 minutes left in the game, Edwards tucked a puck into the top-left corner from the hashmarks to bring the game to 5-0. This marks Edward’s and Simm’s first Olympics and designates Edwards as the first African-American women on the US hockey team. Caroline Harvey, another current badger, scores her second olympic goal in the Canada game, with her previous goal made against Switzerland yesterday. She also led the game in ice-time and added 3 assists. Meanwhile Hillary Knight, a Wisconsin alum, is currently tied in the all-time lead in Olympic points for women’s hockey with 32, after she assisted Harvey’s goal. So far, the women’s hockey team has remained undefeated in preliminary games.

National Governors Association cancels meeting with White House after President Trump plans on only inviting Republicans. Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt said, Quote “NGA staff was informed that the White House intends to limit invitations to the annual business meeting, to Republican governors only. Because NGA’s mission is to represent all 55 governors, it is no longer included in our official program” End-Quote. Brandon Tatum, the NGA's CEO, said in a statement last week that the White House meeting is an important tradition and said the organization was disappointed in the administration's decision to make it partisan. The governors group is one of the few remaining venues where political leaders from both major parties gather to discuss the top issues facing their communities.

ALSO IN NATIONAL NEWS,
The US hit its lowest-ever rank in the leading global corruption index. The Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index measures perception of corruption in the public sector among independent experts and businesspeople. Since last year, the US has been in 29th place out of 182 which is the lowest rank since 2012. Currently, the US is tied with the Bahamas and was beaten by 28th ranked Lithuania, 24th ranked Barbados, 17th ranked Uruguay. The US has been experiencing a downward trend for the past decade, especially reaching a vulnerable level after the Trump administration paused investigations into corporate foreign bribery and halted the government's ability to fight public corruption. The US’ overall CPI score hit its lowest level as well, clocking in at 64 where 100 is the cleanest and 0 is the most corrupt. “Beyond the CPI findings, the temporary freeze and weakening of enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act signal tolerance for corrupt business practices, while cuts to U.S. aid for overseas civil society have weakened global anti-corruption efforts,” the non-profit coalition Transparency International said.
IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
President Trump threatened to block the opening of a new U.S.-Canada bridge on Monday. Trump plans to deny these plans due to economic concerns of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is a 1.5-mile bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario. The majority of the construction on the bridge is complete and is expected to be open this year following testing, however Trump claims he quote “...will not allow this bridge to open until the U.S. is fully compensated for everything we have given them and…Canada treats the U.S with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump said on Truth Social. The bridge cost nearly $4 million and is named after Gordie Howe, a famous Canadian hockey player. It is fully paid for, built, and operated by Ottawa, but was previously agreed to have been owned by the government of Canada and the state of Michigan in 2012. Within the same 2012 agreement, it is stated that iron and steel used should be distributed evenly by the U.S. and Canada, contradictory to Trump’s claim it is entirely owned by Canada. These updates are following claims made in January, where Trump said he would decertify all aircraft made in Canada and threatened a 50% tariff on Canadian planes.
