Aftersight (00:01)
Thank you for joining us for Conexión Colorado. This is presented by Matos La Firm, read by Jennifer here at Aftersight. Let's get started. Today's subject is use your voice even when it shakes. People are listening to you when you speak. Are you saying that you Correction? Are you saying what you need to say? Amigas, look around you and face the facts.
You probably stand out in the rooms you're in. Maybe you're ⁓ correction. Maybe you're the only woman. Maybe you're the only Latina. Maybe you're the youngest one there. Or maybe the oldest. If you're reading this email or listening, odds are you're an outlier in some way, shape, or form. Because of this, a lot of us are afraid to use our voice.
I don't necessarily blame us. Nobody wants to be alone. Nobody wants to be the odd one out. But at the same time, a lot of us want to be leaders. Many of us want to make an impact. We all need to see things change for the better. Correction. We all want to see things change for the better. These things sound great on paper, but really correction.
These things sound great on paper, but the reality is this: none of it happens unless we get uncomfortable and leave our comfort zones. Here's something I learned way too late in life. The world takes you at the value you assign yourself. Correction. If you're someone who tells yourself, either aloud or in private, that your opinion doesn't matter, that your voice and ideas don't matter.
Then you're signaling to the rest of the world that it doesn't need to listen to you. And that couldn't be further from the truth. The world doesn't need fewer Latina voices. It needs them more than ever. What are the qualities that make us undeniably Latina? We're passionate. We bring joy to every room we're in. We're builders. We get things done. Do these sound like qualities the world needs less of?
Or they correction, or are they exactly what the world needs right now? So my call to you is this, use your voice, especially when it feels uncomfortable. There's an election coming up, there are job openings everywhere, there are spaces in our community begging for leadership, and we are worthy of being part of all of these things. Do it not just for yourself, but for
Correction, do it not just for yourself, but for the betterment of the world. Concarino Lisandra.

How to speak up at parent teacher conferences. Conference season is here. For a lot of parents, these meetings feel like a test. The teachers talk fast, you nod along, then walk out with questions you never asked. If that sounds like you're correction, if that sounds like you, you're not alone. Maybe English is your second language, or you grew up being taught never to question La Maestra.
Those feelings are real, but nobody knows your child better than you do, and the teacher needs to know what you know.
Correction and the teacher needs what you know. Try these steps before your next conference. Number one, write down two or three questions before you go. Keep them on your phone so they're ready when you sit down. Two, ask what your child is good at. It's easy for a conference to focus only on problems. Strengths tell you how to help at home.
Correction. Number three, ask for a free interpreter if you want one. An interpreter is someone who speaks your language and helps you talk with the teacher. Public schools have to give you one for free. Ask ahead of time, not the day of. Number four, ask the best way to stay in touch. A quick check-in before winter break helps you catch up. Correction. ⁓
Check in before winter break helps you catch small problems early. This week, look at your school's conference date and put it in your calendar. Your voice belongs in that room too.
