I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on a rather cold one here in Jeolla-do, and tonight is Thursday so you do realize that the funk must fly free and the rocks must be thrown, with this evening broken in your window as December 9, 2021. This is Danno coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio 2 GFN HQ located in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? It is chapter 4 of the work week as we wind down the year and the new music begins to really dry up, but we do have a good amount to go through either new or slept on in our Sampled funk & soul first hour, with joints from Monster Rally, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Wanubale to throw into the cosmos, and plenty of it is in fact new. Dan Lloyd is back once again tonight and our AMPED rock feature begins Gwangju’s man on the drums talking about his favorite albums in the rock categore for 2021, and looking at the list, it was a pretty good year and we definitely have a good 2nd hour on the way. So as always, there’s a lot to do tonight, but first and foremost with it being the holiday season, let’s keep it happy, keep it history, and keep it CHIC. THIS is The Drop.
CHIC – (Funny) Bone
The Drop has turned lit the red light and we’re ready for another edish of our Sampled funk & soul slammer for this week. Danno here studio 2, GFN HQ, doing my thing as between the hours of 8 & 10 on GFN every night. Dan Lloyd will of course be joining us after the funky stuff for our AMPED 2nd hour rock showcase later on, and our rock guru goes over some of his top albums of the year then. And before I forget, thanks for getting with the program tonight, your taste is to be commended.
Now, we just started with a tune by CHIC from their 1978 sophomore album C’est Chic, that tune was called Funny Bone, the final cut on the LP. Now, we do like that instrumental joint with the laughter that reminds of holiday parties & such, but there is some history to this with the big joint on the album Le Freak, which on this date in 1978 went to #1 on the charts.
This song kind of represented peak disco commercially speaking at the time, but the funny thing is CHIC main men Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards wrote this song after being denied entry to Studio 54. Ironic in that their previous songs routinely rocked the dance floors inside the club, but they couldn’t convince the bouncer at the door that the two of them were in fact CHIC.
So, all dressed up with nowhere to go in New York City on NYE, the two of them wrote a song initially titled eff off, but then changed it to freak off, and that eventually morphed into Freak Out, which went to #1 today just under a year later.
#9870 (50/100)…SM…podcast.
Now, we’re gonna move it to a little more breaky realm for the remainder of part 1, but not get too crazy with it. Up next is the library music maestro Alessandro Alessandroni and then we have a BBNG remix & an older cut from Skinshape to take us home, but not all the way to part 2. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.

The Drop is back tonight and we have just gotten through the first audio warp zone of the night. Danno here throwing it into space via the big tower in sajik park, on the mic from studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju. Thanks go out to you as always for taking part. We have Gwangju’s man on the drums Dan Lloyd showing up shortly for our AMPED weekly rock grapples after 9pm, and he’s got a list of some of his favorite rock albums of this year for the 2nd hour tonight. So, let’s get to the liner notes and recap a bit...
Alessandro Alessandroni – Shine On (…a new 7’’ single was just released by Four Flies Records featuring two tracks from the Maestro of library music and is sung by the beloved Cantori Moderni in a typically Italian harmonizing style, poised somewhere in between gospel and disco music.)
VANO 3000 feat BADBADNOTGOOD & Samuel T Herring – Running Away (Time) (…an interesting remix that had been given first airplay by adult swim in the US about 6 months ago, now available. This is a remix of Time Moves Slow by BBNG, which featured on their album IV from 2016.)
Skinshape – Oracolo (…a trip back to around the same time as BBNG’s IV, this one the title track from the artist’s 2015 album meaning Oracle. True name Will Dorey, he hails from the UK originally and has simply been making some of the best organic beats and soulful flavors around. Very high quality stuff.)
Now heading towards the end of part 1, and speaking of quality from Europe, up next we have a new one from Berlin-based collective Wanubale, and their latest is called Breaki (sp). We’ll follow that up with something called Hickups from their 2019 album Phosphenes, and that is going to do it for the show’s first stanza. This is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
Wanubale – Breaki
Wanubale – Hickups

II.
Back on The Drop as we have begun the slow burn 2nd for tonight’s radiological orchestra. What’s going on Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here conducting things low key to start the 2nd quarter of our sampled funk & soul Thursday, and Dan Lloyd has part one of his favorites series for tonight, this being best albums of 2021. That all comes up in the 2nd hour, of course. For right now, we just opened with...
Monster Rally – Island Hopping (…our main man in tropical Cleveland right here with the lead single to his next album, which drops later in Spring of next year. True name Ted Feighan, both his visual art and music are stunning, fun stuff straight out of the art deco tropics.)
Thundercat feat Louis Cole, Raedio & Genevieve Artadi - Satellite (…this is a main featuring bit of music from the upcoming 5th season of Insecure, which airs via HBO. The Issa Rae directed series also features tunes of note from include Saweetie, TeaMarr, and Mereba.)
So, moving ahead we have three more cuts in the next block starting with The Menahan Street Band to be followed by Hollyy and The Teskey Brothers and their latest with the Orchestra Victoria, all of which we’ll discuss after the echoes fade. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
____
The Drop moves ever forward tonight as things keep moving in our Sampled funk & soul first hour for this week. Danno here, letting out all that needs aerating, and Gwangju’s man on the drums Dan Lloyd will be in studio tonight for our AMPED 2nd hour highlighting his favorite albums of 2021 in the rock and/or roll realms. As to what we just launched towards the heavens, that was...
Menahan Street Band feat Victor Benavidas – The Stranger (…this is a tune that originally appeared as Black Velvet on the band’s collab LP with the late great Charles Bradley of the same name, which dropped in 2018. Now we have Los Yesterdays frontman Victor Benavidas providing the vocals on a story of heartbreak & deep anguish. Brilliant, as usual from Menahan.)
Hollyy – Someone Just Like Me (…this is a 5 piece band that is usually a group that showcases more of a bedroom pop & indie rock sound, but this tune has got a little soul to it, for sure. We must point out additionally, that is Holly with two y’s, and the band is signed to Audiotree.)
The Teskey Brothers with Orchestra Victoria – Paint My Heart (Live at Hamer Hall, 2020) (…one thing we slept on last Friday was the release of this live album, which is the Teskey Brothers performing live with the full house orchestra at the famed Hamer Hall of Melbourne, Australia. Do check in full if you like long, lush, lovely soul in your diet. Not to be missed.)

So, let’s switch gears and let’s switch gears while switching gears. A little old and new on the reggae soul covers front up next, and on deck we have an Al Green classic in Let’s Stay Together covered by Night Owls & Destani Wolf. After that we have a Trojan cover of Son of a Preacher Man, and this is by the Gaylettes to finish it off for the first half. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled & AMPED Thursday and that’s a wrap on the first 57.
Night Owls feat Destani Wolf – Let’s Stay Together

The Million Masks of God (April 30th)
“ a record that traverses every corner of their sound, from beefy rock songs to string-assisted grandeur and acoustic bliss, further cementing their place as an under appreciated band to treasure.” NME

Amyl and the Sniffers – Security
Comfort to Me (September 10th)
“'Comfort To Me' sounds like it could be played in a rowdy Australian pub the band are used to – or a colossal arena.” Clash Music

Turnstile – Mystery
Glow On (August 27th)
“Glow On takes (the band) to a new level. It’s a fearless album that doesn’t bow to genre conventions, establishing Turnstile as the present and future of rock music.” Consequence.net

Iceage – Vendetta
Seek Shelter (May 7th)
“It’s a huge, sprawling Britpop epic that evokes The Verve, Oasis and even U2 in its scope and power. There are walls of guitars, layers of backing vocals, thunderous percussive blasts.” The Line of Best Fit

The Wildhearts – Splitter
21st Century Love Songs (September 3rd)
“The album leaves you with that elusive but oh-so-intense feeling – that ‘what the hell just happened’ thing – a hunger only sated by hitting play again. “ Kerrang

Julien Baker – Faith Healer
Little Oblivions (February 26th)
“The resuscitation of a heavier sound works in Baker’s favor, while she still adds hints of the fragile gentleness that has captivated fans since her Sprained Ankle days.” The AV Club

Sam Fender – The Leveller
Seventeen Going Under (October 8th)
“Seventeen Going Under is an album rooted in 2021 that, in spirit at least, seems to look back 40-something years, to the brief early 80s period when Top of the Pops played host to the Specials and the Jam. The result is really powerful.” The Guardian

The War on Drugs – Wasted
I Don’t Live Here Anymore (October 29th)
“I Don’t Live Here Anymore, is their greatest and grandest statement yet. Adam Granduciel’s obsessive nature when it comes to making records has paid off as the Grammy winners' fifth studio album is another triumph in sound.” The Skinny

Black Midi – Chondromalacia Patella
Cavalcade (May 28th)
“The confidence and style with which black midi has taken these risks has led to every gamble paying off. It’s hard to imagine any rock album this year beating Cavalcade in pure genius.” Under the Radar
Sleaford Mods – Nudge It ft. Amy Taylor
Spare Ribs (January 15th)
“Spare Ribs is perhaps the band's high watermark, a searing masterpiece of social commentary, childhood memories and recovered trauma, scathing wit, punk energy, funk, and hip-hop influences, and much more. This is a record with no fat and no filler.” PopMatters

Mogwai – Supposedly, We Were Nightmares
As the Love Continues (February 19th)
“A laser-focused record that’s their longest studio album since The Hawk is Howling, but has a lightness of touch that feels nothing of the sort.” Beats per Minute

IDLES – Progress
Crawler (November 12th)
“It’s a remarkable, haunted and resonate touchstone for rock and roll, a record unafraid of its own emotions and openness—full of stories worth returning to and untangling a hundred times over.” Paste Magazine

Every Time I Die – Radical
The Armed – Ultrapop
Squid – Bright Green Field
Shame – Drunk Tank Pink
Biffy Clyro – The Myth of the Happily Ever After
