Global sugar market summary
  • Brazil reported a significant increase in sugar production, supported by favorable growing conditions. According to UNICA, sugar output in the Center-South region rose 55.3% year over year by April, reaching 2.475 million metric tons. The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service forecasts that Brazil's 2025-26 sugar production could reach a record 44.7 million metric tons. Looking ahead, however, production is expected to ease modestly, with forecasts ranging between 42.5 million and 43.95 million metric tons for 2026-27. The anticipated decline is largely attributed to increased ethanol production demand rather than crop-related challenges. A weaker Brazilian real continues to support export competitiveness despite the presence of a global sugar surplus.
  • Thailand further strengthened its position as a major sugar exporter, recording a 29% increase in sugar exports between January and April 2026, totaling 1.6 million metric tons. The USDA estimates the country's 2025-26 sugar production at 10.25 million metric tons, representing a 2% increase from the previous season. Strong export performance continues to reinforce Thailand's importance within the global sugar trade.
  • India also posted strong production results, with sugar output reaching 27.48 million metric tons from October through mid-April, up 7.7% year over year. The USDA projects full-season production at 35.25 million metric tons. Despite the positive production outlook, concerns are emerging over the potential impact of El Nino on monsoon rainfall. Reduced rainfall could pose risks to future crop development and production cycles, making weather conditions an important factor to monitor in the coming months.
  • At the global level, the sugar market remains in surplus during the 2025-26 season, with the International Sugar Organization projecting a surplus of 2.2 million metric tons.

Welcome to the weekly summary of the global sugar market for 06/14/2026. For more information on any aspect of this report, please visit the CropGPT website for far more detailed reporting and analysis. Brazil has experienced a remarkable boost in sugar production thanks to conducive environmental conditions. According to UNICA, the CentroSouth region's sugar output increased by an impressive 55.3% year on year by April, reaching 2,475,000 metric tons. The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service predicted the overall 2025 after 2026 sugar production could hit an all time high of 44,700,000 metric tons.

Speaker 1:

Nevertheless, projections for 2026 to 2027 suggest a minor decline in production with estimates from CONAB at 43 to 95,000,000 metric tons and the USDA forecasting a further drop to 42,500,000 metric tons. This anticipated reduction largely results from rising ethanol production demands rather than any crop related stress. Furthermore, the depreciation of the Brazilian real continues to strengthen export dynamics, even amid a global surplus. In Thailand, the nation has asserted its significant role as a leading sugar exporter evidenced by a 29% rise in sugar exports from January to April 2026, amounting to 1,600,000 metric tons. The USDA estimates Thailand's twenty twenty five-twenty twenty six sugar output at 10,250,000 metric tons, reflecting a 2% increase from the previous year.

The boost in exports further reinforces Thailand's stature in the international sugar arena. India reported substantial growth in sugar production from October to mid April, achieving a volume of 27,480,000 metric tons, marking a 7.7% rise year on year. The USDA projects a full season production of 35,250,000 metric tons. However, the occurrence of an El Nino event has necessitated a revised outlook for monsoon rainfall, potentially threatening future production cycles. While current figures are strong, the Indian market contends with challenges posed by a weakening monsoon and shifting global climate trends that could impact future yields.

Speaker 1:

Globally, the sugar market finds itself in a surplus during the twenty twenty five-twenty twenty six season, with the International Sugar Organization anticipating a surplus of 2,200,000 metric tons. Still, the development of El Nino presents new uncertainties that might alter the global sugar balance, potentially transforming a surplus into a deficit should adverse conditions prevail in major producing regions.
