(Shakyra) Guess what? Hey, it's your girl Shakyra Mabone
(Jada) Jada Vasser
(Anthony) and Anthony Brinson and this is all shades of chocolate where we bring
(Shakyra) the sweetest
(Jada) the hottest
(All) black culture MSU
(Anthony) we back baby, Yeah. Special guest ale who's technically doing my job at the moment as podcast. Hi. All right and like I said, we're back. Very happy to be here especially with some of the technical difficulties that has happened with these recordings and they have to miss never speak I'm not gonna mention it, but it is what it is. Like I said in one of the recordings I we can mess up behind the times over and I keep doing it. I'm just have very happy to be a part of not what season two of the first all black podcasts of the state news, Otter chocolate. Glad you guys are still tuning in listening. We were actually talking off camera about a young lady who we reached. And like she knew Jada from all shades of talking. She was a freshman too. And I joked with Shakyra level we reached into youth. But if you want to give a little more detail about that Shakyra I know it was it was at some event, Jada? Was it?
(Shakyra) Well, yeah, so I have class with this young lady. It's our broadcasting class. And apparently, she was a part of this Richmond program that I'm still a part on called Ignite. And I was like a guest speaker over the summer to like, basically talk to the students about, you know, why you should join the state news and things like that, and what I do and stuff. So she was like, I introduced myself because I was like, Oh, she's looked friendly. You know, I was like, Hi, my name is Shakyra. And then she was like, I know you. I know you from the, um, you know, the Ignite program over the summer. He was like talking about your podcast and stuff. And I was like, Yeah, that's me. And then she was like, I really liked your podcast. And then she made a mistake and said, all flavors of chocolate. And I was like, oh, no, it's all shades of chocolate. And then she was like, Yeah, I know. Um, I see one of your hosts. And I thought she was talking about Anthony, because, you know, Anthony, he a little friendly. You know, what she was like, oh, no, Judah. She was at the panel and things like that. And I was like, Yeah, that's one of my hosts. I'm like, yes. But yeah, that was really nice.
(Jada) Yeah, so I was at a welcome panel for Karl Marx is a panel for all incoming students, when they come in, and they're part of the digital storytelling or the journalism major, they come to this panel, and they have students who are in the major or faculty talk to the students just about what the major is, and welcome into the school. So I was very fortunate to be one of the students to host a q&a. And it was a really good q&a. I remember that girl coming up to me afterwards. And she was saying, Oh, my gosh, I love what you do. I love the podcasts. I love listening in, you know, thank you for doing it. And I was like, Oh my gosh, you're so welcome. And I'm like, people actually listen to us. Like I know people. But yeah, it hits different with someone be like, Yes, I listened to you, like, I know what you got to talk about. I know your names. I'm gonna you know my name. Thank you so much.
(Anthony) That's so dope, that, you that we've gotten these experiences, and we reaching out to these type of people so far, because like, we're so new, like, we just started beginning this year, last semester, we're like, what 1013 episodes, I know, yoga was named portable. episodes, and we've made that type of impact. And that's just really crazy. And I'm very honored to be here. And with this we in our first episode, we decided just give a little intro and talk to you guys about what we did over the summer. And just our preparation for the school year and everything. And I had asked this question in one of the other recordings too, but I just wanted to ask Jaden Shakyra And I gave an answer as well. But from freshman year to now what's the biggest difference of you as a student like how you view work, how you view class, how you operate around the campus and everything? And what I have said is the answer what they were thinking was just the comfort of being here because when I first entered freshman year, I didn't really want I didn't really know anybody and I didn't even know how the campus looked in general. It was my first time being here once I moved in and everything and I hadn't had no tour everything and then being in classes where nobody really looked like me it was pretty much a culture shock because I always like high school everybody looked like me and everything. So being in a classroom where I didn't really know people didn't really know people who look like me and be in such a big area. It was a lot to deal with. And while it hasn't really changed at all to be honest, I'm just more comfortable being of like owning up to it and being like Jada said in the previous recording that just proud to be here and proud to understand like, you deserve to be here but yeah, my answer a little bit. You can reiterate
(Jada) remember what I said? No. Yeah, I definitely say the difference between freshman me and now Junior me is I have I found more confidence and being black and all white spaces going through the majority black high school there. was black all around me. So I had that confidence because I was always surrounded by people who looked like me, there was never nothing weird or strange about going into a classroom because I knew the people that I was going to be entering and looking at. And some of these people I knew since kindergarten, so we very much really, really knew each other. But coming to college, entering my first classroom where I was like, it's just me, like, there's not one or the person in the lecture of 300, it's just me, it may be one person way over there, but we're not sitting next to each other, I had to learn quickly that if I don't have the confidence to be black, nobody else is gonna have the confidence to be black for me. So I had to find that confidence and be proud to be black, because being black is a really good thing. And going into those classrooms, you have to walk in, they already thinking that because if you're not walking in thinking that they're gonna, they're gonna make you not think that like they're gonna try to deteriorate your mindset. And it gets really stressful being in those spaces for long periods of time. But I know, I have to keep telling myself that I deserve to be here. You know, being in the Journalism major is something that I've always saw myself doing, I couldn't see myself doing nothing else. But I know this major in this workforce comes with some tiring times and some discrimination. But I'm more prepared to take on it, because I'm taking on it right now. And if I find the confidence to be black here, then I can find the confidence to be black in my actual job in my actual career. But it starts here, because if I, if I didn't find it now being a junior, I would have never found it being a journalist out, then I probably would have quit, because I wouldn't have had the confidence to do what I do. Just because people are gonna look at me differently, because I don't look like them. So finding that here definitely helped me do everything that I do. And, you know, talking to the other freshmen definitely help and I try to speak to the black freshmen that come in and say, It's okay, if you're the only one be the only one. Do you know that there's nobody like you, and that's okay, you're unique, be you, be you because nobody else is gonna be you for you.
(Shakyra) Y'all made some great points, like you really do got to have that confidence. Like, I will say, you also have to have that confidence anywhere. But like, you know, of course, for us, you most definitely will have to have a you know, confidence because, like I said, we're in a whole different space. And it's just like, we are conditioned. And we were just talking about this earlier JD like we are conditioned to be like, so, you know, like, in a fight or flight response, because it's just like, everybody just be so aggressive. Like that's why I said in the last record, I said, people are just interesting. Yeah, that's all I could say. Like, that's what I learned so far. Being here, like in this news environment, like always a thought like that, you know, back in high school and stuff like that. But no, I know, when you get a lot of different cultures and different, you know, people from different backgrounds, you just be like, alright, just different.
(Anthony) Yeah, you learn just how to adapt in the space. You're right. Yeah And just like we all said, in our own way, just be proud of who you are, be unique in your space, because be who you are, figure out exactly. If you know, you know, but just at the end of the day, you're not gonna be here, as long as you think like somebody was just reminding me of this, like, it's gonna go by fast. And we're literally juniors in college, and we got to be seen. And it was just 2021. We was just in the pandemic, for better, we're going to just guys, we're going to be voting for president.
(Shakyra) Oh, yeah. And I just wanted to do a side note, a lot has happened since 2021. Oh, my What, like in my personal life, I don't know about job, but we gonna talk about that in a different day.
(Anthony) But with everything that's happened this year, including our summers, just let's just give a little insight of what's been going on in our summer so far. If you want to start off Shakyra Because you already know what we most likely.
(Shakyra) But oh, my summer it was pretty okay. Me personally, I don't like the summer, you know, like, whole vacation break thing because, you know, it's just like, you know, how y'all be saying, like, Y'all have seasonal depression, like during the winter and stuff like that. That's me in the summer. I don't know why it's just that I don't like, but other than that, it was fun. Like, this summer, back in August, I was I went to the NAB J convention. So basically the National Association of Black Journalists we, every year we just have like this convention where we go to you know, whatever state they choose to you know, pick this up you know, during the summer so it's basically just like network and just, you know, talk about you know, how it is as an industry as a, you know, black person and things like that. And it was really fun. It was was my first we was in Alabama this year, Birmingham, Alabama. It was really, I'd never been in Alabama before. So that was kind of new, you know, down south. It was really hard. They, they had big bugs. Just let her know that like I was getting ate up but it was okay. Ah, but yeah, that convention, like the whole experience was really inspirational. Because at first I was just like, I'm not really sure about this, because it's gonna be like a lot of season, you know, like professional journalists, and I'm just a student journalist, I barely got stuff in her portfolio and stuff like that. But once I like, actually network and just went out to people and talk to people, it was just like, they really made you feel right at home. Like, it was really nice. And then I learned like a couple, you know, tips and tricks and stuff like that regarding, you know, how to, you know, brand yourself and basically, like, you know, how to do your resume and stuff like that, what to say what not to say in the interview, you know, all that good stuff. And I also met, like, a lot of local people, like it was a lot of journalists from Detroit that was there too. And I was like, Yes, that's what I want. This is what I need, like, I need to, you know, talk to people back from home. So it was really fun. It was really nice.
(Anthony) And one of the things you said, I've just like, feeling like he was student journalists, like I hopefully you guys will listen to remember Drew, he used to be the managing editor of the state news. One of the main things that stuck with me is what he says like, No, we're not student journalists. You're a journalist. Yeah. Work. You're putting the work in and you're getting your name out there. And like data was mentioned, if nobody else respect you, then you gotta go.
(Shakyra) Yeah, and that's what I really learned. Like, this past semester, and this semester, like, girl, don't be downplaying yourself. You got to talk that talk.
(Anthony) No more. Yeah, and what I was alluding to earlier, me and Jada had the opportunity to also go out of state in Michigan, and she's shaking her head because the convention would have to be fun. Oh, no, it was fun. Especially for me. Like we each had a bit different experiences because I've met a lot of people like that. I've talked to online music artists, I listen to YouTubers I watch and the funny part about it is I wasn't supposed to because the reason she's shaking her head is because it was very unorganized. And with me, I've looked at it as a blessing meaning the people I've met but it was only because I got in areas I wasn't supposed to be in because they had to set up in a batch system the way they had regular badges. Ale holding up some in the back, just say the Oh yeah, I'm gonna say the event like shot I'm gonna keep that and so let's shut up I guess coordinator. But the convention was a dream con I'm referring to and the only like I was saying the only reason I was able to meet the people I didn't meet is because I was getting areas I wasn't supposed to be in and they had to set up like I was saying earlier just as a bad system to where it was regular thing was regular Gold and Platinum, right? Y'all had to go to one right or no gold, platinum and diamond. You weren't? How was supposed to be set up? Is certain area supposed to be sectioned off for the people that got higher badges because we will pay a lot of money to get certain badges and their system crash to where a lot of people couldn't get certain badges. But we were going to aim and get the highest badges, but their system crashed. So if you're lucky enough to get those type of badges, then you would expect to get the type of treatment that that batch came with. But
(Shakyra) also it was like I was just paying or people were just paying for nothing. Some people wasting their money now.
(Anthony) Yeah, some people took people spots of everything it was it almost overshadows the event. But at least for me, personally, I still can take away some of the good moments of everything. But like I was joking with him before we even went like I got out of Michigan. Like that was my first time from memory. My parents say I went somewhere and I was younger. But it was my first time from memory that was out of Michigan. So it could have been
(Shakyra) Oh, and Aaron's gonna say like this. You was fine on a plane, right? Yeah, it was our first time on the plane. Now that was it was really nice. Well, the first flight like to Alabama, it was like it was good until the end. That's when we like I experienced turbulence for the first time. It wasn't bad. But it was bad for me because it was just like, what's going on? I was like, oh, no, no. But other than that, it was really nice. Like, it was a nice experience. Oh, and then another thing. It was, towards the end, it was really okay, because I came back home and not done called COVID. For the first couple of weeks before I left. I was like, I was talking to a friend we was hanging out. And we were just talking about, you know, the whole pandemic, and how was our experience and our point of view, but, and I was like, I don't know, because I never got COVID and my boyfriend at the time, him and his mama and her boyfriend, they all called COVID and I wasn't around them and I wasn't immune to it then. And then he said until he was like, Oh, you're gonna Jinx. Oh, so he was right. He was great. But it wasn't the whole overall it wasn't bad because you know, I'm vaccinated. So
(Anthony) yeah, that's the blessing that when you okay and everything too, but also just like we were all saying or meeting us specifically because data stuff to talk about our version of the experience but just having the opportunity to get out of state and go from somewhere like you're not usually familiar with and just having opportunity I feel blessed because I was with people I care about obviously Jada and then her twin sister my girlfriend Janae and her family and they gave me the opportunity to be with them because it really could have just been a family thing and incorporated me and their family really. So just having the opportunity I just I thank God and I just am really grateful to have the opportunity and like I mentioned Jada was there as well so
(Jada) I was there you know, more background so we went to dream con dream calm this summer. I was in late July and we went to Austin Texas, and I've been to Texas before so it was really really cool to go to a different area down south cool I go down south I usually go to Georgia. That's where a lot of my family's from, but I've never been to Texas. I was like, oh, Texas, it's cool. My dream college experience. I didn't get to do everything I wanted to do but I'm still really really glad I went because it satisfied me even though I didn't get I don't have pictures with any like the YouTube or Twitch creators I don't have like, really any videos. No, I didn't really mean buddy face to face. But seeing them in person like if they walked by or seeing Korean kids to come out on stage like Yeah, that must have been a dream that was the best ever like I am satisfied that I went to the dream car and Cory Kenton was that even if I did not shake this man hand and get a picture I was like they're in the room seeing him come out on stage and we like it's not the black samurais like Craig's kitchen is like my favorite YouTuber of all time. So seeing him on stage and like the same like persona as me it was great. Like even though I didn't get to meet anybody, I still went out of state I traveled I love to travel. I went with my family, which you know, you're part of the family game. Yeah, I went to another state down south. Like I had a really good time. We took the train there. Not a train that
(Shakyra) how's your training experience?
(Jada) We made it fun. That's a long ride. Yeah,
(Shakyra) I think I called you like in the midst of a trade. I was like, hey,
(Jada) yeah, she called me on my bro. We still sleeping on it was crazy. Like the train stopped and everybody was asleep. I woke up, been kidnapped right now like somebody could have just jumped on the train. Like think about it.
(Anthony) In for my enemy people. I kept making the reference to the Mugen train from demon slayer. Sleep on the train. And it was it was crazy. That was also a dope experience. Because which part didn't have Wi Fi like? Was it the it was the it was the set the longest part? Yeah, I was there on that train for like a day and a half no Wi Fi. So it was either talk to the people next to you sleep, eat, or do it all over. I'm glad I was with the people. I was doing it. So I really appreciate y'all and just being there with you all. And also another thing about Austin, Texas, they can make lemonade, at least from what we tasted. Hey, make lemonade. It was pretty disappointing.
(Jada) When I come back, I gotta do better because that eliminate was not eliminate. It was water. It was flavored water.
(Anthony) I hope that's not Texas. I hope that's just the Austin.
(Jada) I hope it was literally like if you put water in a cup of food coloring. Like that's it was not lemonade. But ya know, just getting getting to Texas. Like I said, it's a place I've never been, it was pretty cool. I'm glad I got to experience it. My mom and grandma also came they didn't go to dream convinced like girl was not going with you. But they came to Texas with us. And it was still fun because I know they never been to Texas before. So I'm glad I'm starting to make memories as I'm getting older with like my mom and my grandma. And I'm able to have them come to places with me and have them make their own experiences too. Because I know they didn't get a chance to do a lot of this when they were coming up because of different circumstances. So I'm glad that we are now get to share it together and it was still really fun. I still had a really good time. Yeah, that was a fun trip.
(Anthony) Do you have a favorite memory from the trip?
(Jada) A favorite memory from the trip? Probably with me and Stevie cosplayed as the Themis lathe that was really fun. I was like us, Kevin the swords and then we went to the demon slayer meetup. And we saw all the different people. Everyone's like, oh my god, are you Shinobu? And are you telling me okay, we're like, yeah, they're like, Oh, my God. I'm like Zenit Sue. And I'm Tom Drew. And I was like, Yeah, we all took pictures. And we all like did the seats. It was so nerdy, but it was so fun. Like, somebody's coming in. They're like, Oh, my gosh, what are you doing? But like, I'm glad everybody at Dream con had the same vision. Like we all wanted to go to be nerds. Because we know the outside world is like, What are y'all doing? But everybody nobody, like made fun of nobody. Everybody was laughing and having a good time.
(Shakyra) Like everybody was having fun, like, everybody's recognized that people like somebody walked past us like, Are you such such they're like, Yeah, you know who I am. I know who you are. Like it was just fun to see everybody have like the same goal in mind and just dress up for a weekend and not have nobody say anything and just have fun
(Anthony) and it's like the younger me would be so happy because like I was bullied. I remember being bullied for like
(Shakyra) yeah, it was like you know, you're that one kid well, yeah, but that's good because he's just like you're being who you aren't. And I think he was talking about that the other day like how everything that he was bullied for is
(Anthony) from the black community. I was gonna just but you At the black community, just a lot of things that were deemed like, ugly or not popular is now being popularized anime culture being one of it, or in black culture being one of them. And it's just, it's good to see on one hand, it's good to see, like how accepted it is. But on the other hand, it's like it's only it's accepted now versus Yeah, hi. Oh,
(Shakyra) so that ties into what she was gonna say about how us you know, when he was younger, you got kind of like sawed off for you know,
(Anthony) enemy pokimane and Yugioh cards. It's like you have those people that like those like things you do, and then the rest everybody. Weird. Yeah, yeah. So with all that being said, I guess, do you guys have anything more to say? I got one more question for you. Specifically.
(Shakyra) Next year. Y'all go on to the next and IBJ convention in Chicago next or this summer, so or next summer? Okay. But yeah. Oh, halfway. Oh, she's given us Cute Cards. It was my birthday. My birthday was on the sixth of September 6. Yes. I have so much fun. You know, Jada, she joined me to have a dinner. It was really nice. And she gave me some gifts. And I brought cupcakes. And did you get some cupcakes? I actually didn't know. Oh, dang. We still got some love, though. Yeah. And that's another thing we live together now.
(Anthony) That definitely wasn't the high was when we first started talking, I was definitely live together Shut up the landings, like crossing everything away. Because when building. Yeah, just from my perspective, hopefully, I feel the same way about me. But I love living with them. Because it was just the preparation to getting here has just been a lot like mentally and financially, literally. So just being where we are now. And now we live in together. Now. We still continue on our podcast together. It's made the college experience really fun. Because before I got into college, he got always here always heard though, like college is gonna be some of the best time of your life. And I didn't feel that way for the longest time at college. And it wasn't until I realized Shakyra somebody I've known since middle school has been here. She introduced me it's the love of my life currently, hopefully for the rest of my life and also her twin sister who I can generally consider a best friend. So just, I wouldn't have got that without being a Michigan State. So just being able to now support the school in a way of having an all black podcast working at the state news and putting out content that can relate to Michigan State. It just really makes me happy. And I'm glad I'm here with
(Jada) you know, I love living together. I love living with you guys feels like we're doing a podcast every day when we're at home. Because when I tell you we talk like we talk, but I always wanted people who could keep up with conversation, because I always found myself talking to people who's like who would like yeah, me to death. And I'm like, Oh my gosh, I'm talking about I'm so sorry. But like living with Anthony Shakyra Like they act we talk questions back and forth. We determine which I never like God. So it was really interesting. Like when we had one of our first really, really deep conversations. I'm like, Oh my gosh, we could talk all day. Like there was one time in the dorm Meet Anthony talk till 630 in the morning. Like we it was just throwing questions back and forth to each other and I never got that. But I'm so you will do it once you do it once. Well, I'm just so happy that I finally met the people that I could truly call like my lifelong friends like my sister Moduses. I think I talked about CS one. She graduated from Michigan State. And she still talks to the people that she met her freshman year now. Like they're coming to Jamaica with us like they're in her way they are Yeah, she said these are her lifelong people.
(Anthony) We got a lot of moving parts to get
(Jada) to you, right what you know, my sister and my brother in law, they are already married, but because of COVID They couldn't have a wedding. They went to the courthouse to get married. But there'll be married five years next year on May 24 2024. So they're having a vow renewal in Jamaica. And they've been married for five years together for like 15 years, something like that. Yeah, so I'm really excited for that. If you become it will be will be turned up to me because again,
(Anthony) like going from just these experiences like my parents, I've even been out the country so things go well things go planned, like the fact that I met like you allow me to meet somebody that's taken me to Jamaica, like y'all you got to be my friend for life regardless of where anything that ever happened. So I'm just really grateful to be in a position I am now and I just feel like very blessed like sometimes I think like oh I'm behind like I'm not doing this like other people are doing and then I remind myself like everybody's path is different. Yeah, and today we are in differen. Season two let's see. Okay, okay, and it just we all get to the same place we all go graduate we all go have these memories together and yeah, and with that being said, I guess I just ended off by asking you all what's your expectations for the year whether it be academics Halloween, Christmas, spooky, spooky, scary some.
(Jada) Okay, you need to come back Well, you know, that says the conversation Corey Anyways, um,
my expectation for this semester. I mean, I don't really have a set expectation like I know there's a couple of things I want to do. I know I want to keep writing on different beats because I want to get experienced writing about different stuff, which I think I got. I did a lot environmental reporting over the summer. So that introduced me to that beat. I'm doing a little bit more of that this semester, I'm getting on more on the political beat with my drum for 92 class. I've never written like very political before. So I'm kind of excited to do that. Just figuring out different stuff to really figure out what I want my forever b2b. More personal stuff. I'm really excited to just live in Lansing because I know Shakyra always talked about Lansing summer because it looks really so fun. It's up here in summer. And it's like being up here. I can't wait to experience that. I've I've been closer to my friends. L because l lived out here. And I know every time I moved back home, I was like, oh my god, it's gonna be like three months before I see you again. But I'm really excited to you know, be back bonded with her. I'm super happy. She's here. And yeah, just make more memories with job because I want to make these last two years count. And I'm really glad that I'm having these last two years with people I know are gonna be with me beyond graduation.
(Shakyra) Yeah, I agree. That was Yeah, you made some good points. So academically, I just want to, you know, get to know my professors a little bit more. Like, I already have a mentor. You know, she's really nice. I really like her. I feel like we connect on a same level. Like, she gives me things like that. And I just want to like make more networking, like make more connections and stuff like that. So and possibly like, you know, getting an internship because I didn't have an internship yet, but it's okay. I'm gonna Well, yeah, but personally, um, I just ready to evolve, like, even more than I, you know, just be a new meat every year and things like that, like every school year. Yeah, I just hope. First of all, I just hope the football team will just be better this year. Like, no disrespect, but what the what the hell was that last year? Like, what was that spot for me? Oh that's crazy. But yeah, I'm just super excited for this year. I just feel like something new is really about to be knocking on my door. And I'm just welcoming it, like, Come on, bring me all the abundance, you know.
(Anthony) Yeah. And just to have like a combination of what they both say I agree with everything they said. And in addition to that, I just hoped by before seeing here, like, you don't even have to be by the end of this year. But before I start seeing a year, I just hope I know what I want to do as far as a career before I enter my senior year, because I don't know, at times college makes me feel rushed. And then I feel like I'm it's really like I feel behind and it's just like when people ask me what I want to do outside of college, I don't know. And I feel bad. Because I'm like, I know these like I know what I like to do. I just don't know what career I want to do. Yeah.
(Shakyra) It's just like, after convention, they kept asking me that, like, oh, so what do you want to do? And he's just like, they were saying, like, all these fancy, you know, like, positions and stuff. I was like, Oh, I don't really know that. I'm not really familiar with that. But I know I want to do this. But it's just like that. It's okay. Because I just frankly, feel like even when you do know what you want to do in your life, you still going to be like, you know, know what's going on, bro? But yeah, it's just just stay focused. That's all I can say.
(Anthony) Yeah, and with that being said, is that any closing thoughts at all? When it comes to this? I'm gonna mic real quick here.
(Jada) Oh my gosh, she's so excited.
