Scripts-Aloud

In the quiet, rural town of Hopedale, three strangers meet on a lonely train platform, each waiting for a train that may never come. Tito, a corporate executive obsessed with wealth and power, clashes with Grinder, a scruffy, freewheeling wanderer who champions personal freedom. Their tense debate is interrupted by Sophie, an older woman determined to spread her evangelical message of salvation. Over the course of a single afternoon, this unlikely trio battles over the core truths of American life: the pursuit of the dollar, the promise of faith, and the price of independence. A short-form audio drama that is a compelling, cutting snapshot of a deeply divided modern society.

šŸ“ Show Notes: Episode 1: "The Train Station Blues"
Synopsis: A single-episode audio drama chronicling the chance meeting of three vastly different individuals—a wealthy businessman, a young vagabond, and an evangelist—at the Hopedale train station. As they wait for trains that may or may not arrive, their polite conversation quickly spirals into a heated and often raw debate about life, liberty, money, and morality. The episode culminates in a crucial moment of choice when a freight train rolls through, challenging each character's deeply held beliefs about their life's path.

Written by: Rick Regan Date: March 20, 2025
Major Themes Explored:
  • Wealth vs. Freedom: The conflict between a life dedicated to "work and money" and a life of "freedom" and non-conformity.
  • Religious Fundamentalism vs. Secularism: The clash between one character's fervent belief in salvation through Jesus and another's rejection of organized religion and "magic words."
  • Social Division & Classism: The deep-seated animosity and judgment between the financially successful Tito (who calls Grinder a "bum" and a "drain on society") and the anti-establishment Grinder.
  • The American Dream's Failure: The backdrop of Hopedale, a failed "utopian community," mirrors the characters' own stalled journeys and disillusionment.
  • Conformity vs. Individualism: The argument over "towing the line" in a corporate "herd of sheep" versus embracing the self-identity and unique worldview of a "free spirit."
  • The Unforeseen Path: The theme of waiting and missed opportunities, symbolized by the train that doesn't stop for those who paid for tickets, but offers a spontaneous escape for the free spirit.

EXT. TRAIN PLATFORM - DAY
At the edge of a small, rural town, stands the modest
train station and simple platform. The brick station is a
small building with a utility closet, two restrooms and a
ticket window. The Ticket Window is closed, with a screen
pulled down behind the glass. A sign by the platform has
big letters, spelling ā€œHOPEDALEā€.
TITO, a middle-aged man, comes walking by the station and
stands on the platform. He is wearing stylish and
expensive clothes that look both relaxed and formal.
Tito looks down the track and then down at his watch.
TITO
(muttering)
A few more minutes.
Tito walks up and down the platform, then sits on the
only bench on the platform.
GRINDER, a scruffy man in his twenties, appears walking
down the tracks, towards the station. He waves at Tito.
GRINDER
(pleasant)
What’s up, man?
Tito looks at the scruffy fellow, rolls his eyes and
turns away.
Grinder mounts the platform, leaning his pack against the
station wall. He sits down next to his pack, on the
pavement, leaning against the wall.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
Hey, man, do you know, is there a
water fountain or something?
Tito looks at him, then turns his head, pointing around
the corner to the water fountain on the wall.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
Uh...thanks, man.
Grinder gets up, taking his water bottle and fills it at
the fountain, drinking a big gulp of the water.
Tito looks down at his watch, then down the tracks. He
pulls out a smartphone and starts to tap the screen.
SOPHIE, an older woman in old-fashioned clothes, comes
rushing up onto the platform. She looks at her watch then
down the tracks. She sees Tito.
SOPHIE
2.
2.
It hasn’t come yet, right?
TITO
No. Nothing has come through.
SOPHIE
Oh! I was afraid. Afraid I’d miss
it!
Sophie goes to the bench and sits next to Tito.
Tito reluctantly makes room for her.
Grinder comes back, walking around the platform.
GRINDER
So, what town is this?
Tito just looks at Grinder, then points to the sign on
the platform.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
Hopedale?
SOPHIE
That’s right. Hopedale. Do you
know it?
GRINDER
No. Never heard of it. Nice?
SOPHIE
(proud)
Well! It was world-famous for a
while. A ā€œutopian communityā€.
People came from all over the
world to see what was possible
when good folks put their mind to
it.
TITO
(dismissively)
Or something like that...
GRINDER
I don’t get it. What do you mean?
TITO
The whole thing went belly up in
less than fifteen years. Pie-in
the-sky stuff.
3.
3.
SOPHIE
It was based on the principles of
Jesus. It provided a model for
people to live a good life, and
the town was to be an example to
the world.
TITO
Like I said, pie-in-the-sky.
SOPHIE
And you know, the time is right
for that kind of thinking to come
back around. Why, there are signs
that folks yearn for a special
place like Hopedale. The Movement
is just getting rolling!
GRINDER
So, a town full of bible-thumpers
and holy-rollers? No thanks.
SOPHIE
Are you not saved, my boy? It’s
not too late. Have you accepted
Jesus as your personal savior?
GRINDER
Uh...no. I’ve actually spent a
long time running away from people
like that.
TITO
Oh, here we go...
SOPHIE
(irritated)
People like what? People that care
about your soul? People that want
to see you in heaven? People that
want to share the message of
Jesus?
GRINDER
It’s just that...
SOPHIE
(cutting him off)
Do you know the story of Jesus? It
is the greatest story of mankind.
I can share the gospel with you
right now.
GRINDER
No!
TITO
4.
4.
(simultaneous)
Please don’t!
GRINDER (CONT’D)
(tactfully)
No, please. Just keep it to
yourself.
SOPHIE
But salvation is still possible!
It’s not too late, but the hour is
upon us.
TITO
(angry)
No, it’s not!
GRINDER
Hey, hey. Easy, man.
TITO
(mocking)
No! The ā€œhour of salvationā€ is not
upon us. There is no salvation.
There is only work. Work and
money. That’s it.
GRINDER
For you, maybe...
TITO
What’s that supposed to mean?
Coming from you, a bum. A hobo?
GRINDER
Who are you calling a bum?
TITO
You! I’m calling you a bum. What
are you going to do about it?
GRINDER
Look, man. I just don’t believe in
what you believe in. But that’s
alright. It’s still a free
country. But why do you have to
insult me, huh?
TITO
Because you are a bum! Walking
down the tracks. Don’t know where
you are.
TITO (CONT’D)
5.
5.
TITO (CONT’D)
And when the train comes, you
can’t get on, because you need a
ticket. Know what that is? Huh?
ā€˜Cause I paid for a ticket! First
Class, on the Business Express.
GRINDER
I’ll get on, or I won’t. That’s my
deal. But what’s your problem?
TITO
My problem? My problem is you.
You’re my problem. You know why?
GRINDER
Yeah, I do.
TITO
I’ll tell you why, because you are
a drain on society. A moocher, a
leach. You want the whole world to
look out for you but you don’t put
anything back in. I pay taxes and
the government wastes it on bums
and dead-enders like you. That’s
my problem! You!
GRINDER
Nah, you got it all wrong, man.
You have it all upside-down and
inside-out. You have your head so
far up your wallet, you can’t even
see the clouds or the sun.
TITO
Hogwash!
GRINDER
No, it’s true, man. You maybe make
a lot of money...
TITO
I do. I have started three
different financial companies. I
have offices and staff working
around the clock - providing
VALUE.
GRINDER
Oh, yeah, I’m sure. Shareholder
value, stock options. Everything
is optimized, quantized, measured
and managed.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
6.
6.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
But let me ask you, if a bum like
me came in and asked for a job,
would you hire me?
TITO
Hell no! We don’t hire bums. Not a
fit for our culture.
GRINDER
Right. Of course. Because
everybody has to tow the line,
walk the walk. Wear the right
clothes, talk the way you talk.
The conformity is oppressive, man.
TITO
Oh, can it. I’ve had enough of
lecturing by people like you. Free
spirits who are ā€œindependent
thinkersā€. As if. You are trapped
in your own dogma, your own
righteousness. You want to cancel
everybody who doesn’t bow down to
your worldview that everything is
equal. That’s the real oppression.
GRINDER
Look, man, we can disagree. We can
argue and debate about whatever
you want. But what I don’t like is
that you want everybody to just
agree with you and then shut up.
Make everybody a sheep, in a herd.
That’s what your offices look
like, I bet. A herd of sheep, just
waiting for the clock to strike so
they can head out the door.
TITO
But it’s the nonsense of you
people that gets me. No critical
thinking. No real principals. You
are stuck being a bum because you
don’t believe in the truth. And
there is a truth!
SOPHIE
Yes! Yes! There is a truth. The
Bible is real! The resurrection is
upon us. The Savior is coming
soon!
GRINDER
7.
7.
Lady, even your book says, ā€œyou
shall know neither the hour nor
the day.ā€ So you don’t know.
SOPHIE
But the signs, the wonders. All
around us. God is real. His
judgement comes for all of us.
GRINDER
Hey, I’ll take my chances with
God. If there is a God, then he
will know the content of our
character and the goodness in our
hearts.
TITO
But there is no God. There is only
work and money. The history is
written by the victors, and to the
victors go the spoils. You want
the world to operate on hope and
compassion, but that’s not how the
world works. It is ultimately
might that makes right. And the
strong will rule, as they should.
As ā€˜we’ should.
GRINDER
But that’s just it. The only
people that want to be in charge
are the ones that want to force
everybody else to act and think
the way they tell ā€˜em. Comply and
obey! Well, no thanks.
SOPHIE
It will be the righteous and the
faithful who will be saved in this
world. The only path to heaven is
through Jesus! And we, we are here
as the last Disciples! When the
Lord is come, we will have the way
paved with roses! Halleluiah!
Praise him!
GRINDER
Yeah, no, see, that’s what I’m
talking about. ā€œHave you said the
magic words?ā€ ā€œHave you committed
to our particular and specific
cult?ā€ No! No, and I’m not going
to.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
8.
8.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
It just makes the world easier to
think that you are on the divine
path, but, lady, you are wrong.
SOPHIE
God has told us the one true way!
GRINDER
Even if He did, why did he tell
you guys one thing and the other
folks something different? How can
you be right but they be wrong? It
doesn’t make any sense.
SOPHIE
We have God’s own words,
instructions, brought by his only
Son! The truth is right there,
plain as day. And you are welcome
to it! When the train comes, get
on with me. I will buy you a
ticket, and you can be saved at
the revival tonight. You can
finally have the peace in your
heart.
GRINDER
You keep the peace to yourself,
thanks. If you get comfort and
peace from whatever weirdo cult
you are in, I say, go for it. Just
leave me OUT OF IT! Leave the rest
of the people alone. That’s
promoting real peace.
SOPHIE
But we are tasked to spread the
Good News!
GRINDER
Yes! I’ve heard it, a thousand
times. And I reject it, every
single time. So leave me alone
about my soul, okay?
TITO
As if your soul was your real
problem.
GRINDER
Look, you too! Just leave me
alone. I don’t want to be a drone
in your corporate ā€˜campus’.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
9.
9.
GRINDER (CONT’D)
I don’t want to cover myself with
meaningless accolades about
ā€˜quarterly goals’. It’s all just
transactions. Nothing you are
doing is making the world a better
place. Just let people be who they
are.
TITO
Oh, spare me your identity
politics harangue! Your idea of
gender and society are so twisted
around you don’t even see the
boundaries of reality. It’s just
MEN and WOMEN, see. That’s it. But
what am I saying? You’re probably
a fag anyway?
GRINDER
And if I was?
SOPHIE
The God above will bring righteous
anger and punishment upon you!
TITO
See? Even she knows the score. Men
have to be men. Not weak minded,
feeble bodied, gamers in your
mom’s basement.
(disgusted)
The generation of kids today...
SOPHIE
We have to get Christ back in the
schools. We have to have the Lord
in our hearts, in our families, in
our communities.
GRINDER
Or, you could just let people be
whatever they want to be! It’s
like that guy said, imagine
there’s no heaven, no hell below
us, above us only sky.
SOPHIE
When Satan has blackened your
heart like this, I can only pray.
I pray that Jesus has his mercy
for you.
GRINDER
Me too.
10.
10.
A freight train comes lumbering slowly down the tracks.
There are full coal bins, lumber on flat cars, box cars
with some of the doors open. The train rumbles by.
TITO
There you go. The hobo’s way.
GRINDER
(to Tito)
Come with me. You can go too.
TITO
I have a ticket, First Class.
GRINDER
But you can set yourself free,
man. It’s your choice. You too,
ma’am. Come on. It’s free.
SOPHIE
The Lord will provide, in His good
time.
GRINDER
It may not be what you expect or
what you want, but the train is
here now.
TITO
Go on! Beat it, ya bum!
GRINDER
At least I’m free, man.
Grinder grabs his pack, and heads down the platform.
Grinder jumps into an open boxcar and the train moves on
down the track.
Tito and Sophie just stand, watching it go away.
Tito looks down at his phone, poking the screen.
TITO
It should be here by now.
SOPHIE
What?
TITO
The Express. To the city.
SOPHIE
Oh, no. The Express doesn’t stop
here anymore. It’s express.
11.
11.
TITO
The timetable says it is coming.
SOPHIE
It’s not.
TITO
How do you know?
SOPHIE
Because if the Express was coming,
it would already be here. But it’s
not. It’s not coming.
TITO
But what are you waiting for?
SOPHIE
A train.
TITO
But you said there is no train.
SOPHIE
The Lord will provide.
TITO
Oh, to hell with it!
Tito stomps out of the station.
Sophie sits and waits.
SOPHIE
The Lord will provide.
END.
