The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A tribute on the 20th anniversary of George Harrison's passing to start, then two full hours of indie mayhem with freshly picked truffles courtesy of Prince Paolo & Danno.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 30, 2021.  To finish the month, we mark the 20th anniversary of George Harrison's transformation to start the show.  Always referred to as "The Quiet Beatle," (he preferred "The Economy Class Beatle") he was always so much more than merely that and was truly one of the true greats of songwriting.  Following that, we let the new kids run wild with great new cuts from Stray Fossa, Freedom Fry, Haley Johnsen, and so many more that it's hard to keep our heads on straight.

BUNNI – Favorite Place
Local Natives – More Than This
Haley Johnsen – Timeless
Ed Mount – It Might Be Something
PART 1 FACTS
George Harrison – If Not For You
- The legendary Beatles guitarist passed away 20 years ago yesterday.
- Always my favorite Beatle, and a very good solo artist as well, If Not For You appeared on All Things Must Pass, his landmark triple album upon the band’s breakup.
- He had written and composed so many songs that had gotten a pass from Lennon & McCartney that the album was basically already made.
- Often called the Quiet Beatle, which he didn’t like & preferred the economy-class Beatle, Harrison was never one for the media spotlight.
- Attack on Christmas Eve 1999…
Freedom Fry – Cool When I’m With You
- Marie & Bruce, the French-American husband-wife superduo out of LA are back with this as of a couple weeks ago.
- Just a standalone single for now, but really, such awesome, lovely people and their appearance on the show on Halloween Weekend was such a fun time.
- They’ve also got signed copies of their latest album for sale since late last month. That is called L’Invitation, and you can check that on their website.
BUNNI – Favorite Place
- This is the solo moniker of Danish-Turkish artist Bunyamin Eroglu, and latest standalone single.
- His debut album Permanent Vacation came out in 2018, and this is the 2nd tune on his latest LP called Penguin, which dropped in late October of this year.
Local Natives – More Than This
- Veteran California quintet Local Natives are back with their latest, a covers EP called Music From The Pen Gala 1983.
- The project, which was recorded for the Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell-starring Apple TV+ series The Shrink Next Door, hears the LA indie rock band cover songs by Roxy Music, Michael McDonald, 10cc, and Gerry Rafferty.
Haley Johnsen – Timeless
- Our main girl in Portland is back with this latest single as of last week.
- Again, what a voice. She was an amazing guest on the show as well a couple of months back.
- She has a still-unnamed album coming out sometime next year and I would presume that this is part of it, but we’ll have to wait & see.
- The song is a reminder she says to Prince Paolo to always stay in the present and appreciate the little things in life.
Ed Mount – It Might Be Something
- This is an interesting French artist true name Thibault Chevallier who kind of straddles the line depending on his mood between dream pop & outright French pop.
- Originally a jazz player, Ed Mount is kind of his more exploratory side in music as far as the pop & indie realms go.
PART 2 SONGS
Darius - FADED (ft Amaria)
HATT - Sad Affair
ELOHIM – Don't Kick Me
Bye Benesco - Devl Eyes
CYAMO - Anywhere You Go
James Chatburn - Howling
PART 2 FACTS
Darius - FADED (ft Amaria)
- Darius is a producer from Paris. He recently released a new EP called “Oasis” via Roche Musique.
- The EP is 6 tracks, it is really good, and I think it is a great example of some good ol’ French house music. The French always seem to have a sort of smoothness, sexiness, and sophistication when it comes to making house music.
- About his process, Darius says that he likes to move out to the countryside for a few weeks to get away from the city.
- Paradoxically, it is an opportunity for him to do non-music things like cooking, walking, and drawing. I guess the downtime allows him to recharge those creative batteries and make his super smooth music.
HATT - Sad Affair
- Staying in France, we had electro pop duo HATT. Their newest single, “Sad Affair” comes to us via Cookie Records.
- Notably, the pair’s previous two singles came via Kitsune Musique, so naturally, this duo has been getting a lot of attention.
- Musically, I think the song is great. It’s got warm chords, heavy vocals, and lots of electronic goodness mixed in there. Another strong offering from HATT.
ELOHIM – Don't Kick Me
- Elohim is a very cool producer based in Los Angeles.
- Musically, the track is bouncy, hypnotic, and very catchy. I like the driving drums and all the little vocal effects in there.
- About the song, Elohim says that it is a track that explores her various personalities in her, and its only goal was our enjoyment. Goal accomplished; I definitely do enjoy that track.
Bye Benesco - Devl Eyes
- Bye Benesco is the dream pop project fronted by Lenny-Dee Doucha. Bye Benesco is from South Afirca and their latest single “Devl Eyes” came with the announcement of a new EP. No details yet but we do know that it is scheduled for release early next year.
- “Devl Eyes” is a whirlwind of sound, very full and pulsating, really cool stuff. All of Bye Benesco’s stuff is great so definitely go and check out their catalogue and stay tuned for the coming EP.
CYAMO - Anywhere You Go
- CYAMO is an indie disco duo that originated in Gothenburg. They say that their sound is heavily influenced by Norwegian space disco, synth and funk.
- “Anywhere You Go” is their latest release and it is taken from their forthcoming debut album, which is promised for release sometime next year.
James Chatburn – Howling
- Part 2 of the show is pretty energetic but we are going to slow it down for the last track on the quarter. James Chatburn is a Berlin-based artist who is originally from Australia.
- The track is about some late-night howling, if you know what I mean. James overheard some neighbors having some 4am fun after returning home from a party and that audio experience inspired this song.
- This song is our first peak at James’ sophomore album, entitled “Late-Night Howling”, which is schedule for release early next year.
PART 3 SONGS
Tired Cossack – Machina
Stray Fossa – Heartbeats
Fleur Electra - Lucky Penny
Issac Winemiller - Anything At All
Lotus Bliss - Cerebral Love
Moodring - Poison
PART 3 FACTS
Tired Cossack – Machina
- Tired Cossack is back on the show with a new single. We played his song “Pea Roll Along” last month, I liked it a lot and I like his new single even more. It’s got an 80s punk feel to it.
- Tired Cossack is an artist based in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. He is getting set to drop a new full-length album. The album drops this Friday and it is entitled “Hocus Pocus”.
- Thematically, he says that the album is heavily influenced by Ukranian culture and folk stories. Should be an interesting listen
Stray Fossa – Heartbeats
- I always smile a little when I see a new Stray Fossa track pop up on my feed and their newest track, “Heartbeats” is no exception. The track comes to us from none other than Nice Guys.
- This track is part of the Nice Guys compilation album, “Reprise Volume #1”.
- Stray Fossa is a trio from Charlottesville, and it’s been mentioned that this track is sort of an intro to a new musical direction for the band. They say that their music will now be more electronic and beat focused. It should be interesting to see how their new stuff will sound.
Fleur Electra - Lucky Penny
- Fleur Electra is the moniker of Anna Klein. She is a Toronto-based singer, songwriter, producer, and performer.
- “Lucky Penny” is her debut single and it is our first taste of her forthcoming debut album. The album will be entitled, “In Technicolor” and it is slated for release sometime next year.
- The song definitely has that retro touch to it, and there is a retro looking music video to go along with the track as well so do go and check that out.
Issac Winemiller - Anything At All
- Issac Winemiller is an artist originally from Minnesota, but who is now currently residing in Montana.
- “Anything at All” is very latest and I’m really feeling it. The instrumentation is summery and bright, the lyrics and vocals are smooth and laid-back, and there is also a really slick guitar solo section in there as well.
- No official word yet on an album but I have seen some rumors about it floating around already so I'll keep you all posted on that.
Lotus Bliss - Cerebral Love
- Lotus Bliss is a trio hailing from Cantebury, UK. Earlier this year, the band released with debut EP, “A Good Death is a Beautiful Thing”.
- On that EP, they had two tracks, “The Horror” and “Thunder in the Room”, which both ended up on Spotify’s Fresh Finds Indie & Fresh Finds Rock playlists. Quite the achievement for an up-and-coming band and it definitely helped them gain more exposure.
- They are back with a new, dreamy indie rock track in “Cerebral Love”. They are definitely a band to keep an eye on in the coming months. I’m sure a full-length album will be announced in the coming months.
Moodring – Poison
- Moodring is an indie duo from what is really a hotbed of great music these days, of course I’m talking about Oklahoma City.
- The song is about how someone close to you can actually be like a poison in your life.
- Band singer and songwriter Charli Smith said that “writing this song was one of her favorite experiences yet on this planet”. Does the song live up to that kind of hype? I say, yes, yes it does.
PART 4 SONGS
Chase Zera – Jealous
Daniel Allan - Feel Like That (with Idarose)
Dyan Valdes - Be My Revolution
Difficult Subject - Wave Of Euphoria
Fieh - Telephone Girl
Lou Beauty - Bank Account
PART 4 FACTS
Chase Zera – Jealous
- Chase Zera is a musician and dancer from Sydney, Australia. She recently went through a musical evolution, shifting her sound to more synth and disco based.
- “Jealous” is the second single since this change and I think it sounds great. The song is about being jealous, which Chase admits is kind of toxic but she also points out that feeling a bit jealous is what actually makes you realize that you have feelings for someone. That is absolutely very true.
Daniel Allan - Feel Like That (with Idarose)
- Daniel Allan is a producer and artist based in LA. “Feel Like That” features the vocals of Ida Rose and it is the second single taken from his forthcoming EP, “Overstimulated”.
- Very Interesting, he crowdfunded the EP in a new way, at least it is the first I’ve ever heard of someone doing it.
- He crowdfunded using crypto! He was able to produce 50 Ethereum coins, which was about $190k US dollars, in one day of crowdfunding. Revolutionary stuff in the inde music space for sure.
Dyan Valdes - Be My Revolution
- Dyan Valdes is an artist based in Berlin. Her energetic new single, “Be My Revolution” comes ahead of her forthcoming album “Stand”. No official dates set for that release.
- “Be My Revolution” is a metaphor for falling in love. She feels that going through a political awakening is similar to falling in love. They are both exciting, dangerous, and hopeful about the future.
Difficult Subject - Wave Of Euphoria
- This was this week’s “impossible to research” track... we seem to have one every week with these indie bands.
- This track caught my ear because there is a lot going on here musically. A true blend of genres, lots of surprises scattered throughout. I was especially surprised about the choice of instruments used. I didn’t think that they would work well together but Difficult Subject made it happen.
- Not my usual cup of tea but I did think that the track was an intersting listen.
Fieh - Telephone Girl
- Fieh is a 7-piece neo-soul group based in Norway. Their newest release, “Telephone Girl” comes to us via Jansen Records.
- The group has announced the release of their new album, “In the Sun, In the Rain”. The album will be 11 tracks and it is slated for release this coming March.
- The song is about the modern phenomenon of telephobia. That of course is the fear of talking on the phone.
Lou Beauty - Bank Account
- Lou Beauty is the moniker of Luis A. Velez. He is an indie artist based in Bakersfield. Lou reached out via IG and I must apologize for being super late with a reply.
- I don’t check my messages much because all the messages are basically spam or complaints from angry listeners of Under the Radar Tuesday Nights.
- Anyway, a few weeks back Lou Beauty released a fantastic new EP entitled Agoraphobia; definitely go and check that out.
- The track was inspired by the period of time when Lou had just graduated from university and quit his job. The song is about the feeling of not wanting or needing to check your bank account. I think we’ve all been there before.
