And here’s today’s news from Public Sector Executive – on Tuesday the 9th July 2024.

The Prime Minister has met all of the regional mayors in 10 Downing Street this morning to begin work on moving power away from Westminster.
This comes as the government looks set to drop the ‘Levelling Up’ phrase that was introduced by Boris Johnson, with the department becoming the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
As part of a major devolution programme that is aiming to ‘power up’ all parts of the country, the roundtable will see the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister aiming to reset the government’s relationship with local government through a focus on public service, respect and collaboration. Discussions will centre around a new partnership approach, whilst also agreeing on early actions that are needed to scale-up devolution.

Against the backdrop of a looming prisons crisis, the Scottish Government has opened a consultation into the amount of time offenders are spending in prison.
The consultation is inviting views on changes to the point of release under licence conditions for people that are serving a custodial sentence of four years of more. This would allow individuals to return to their communities in a way that is managed, whilst also reducing the pressure that the prison estate is under.
These measures would not apply to those that are serving extended sentences for violent or sexual offences, however.

Following his return to the Cabinet, former Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband has set out his priorities for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
In a letter to his colleagues in the department, Miliband outlined how the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will be at the heart of the government’s agenda, as it leads one of the Prime Minister’s five national missions to transform Britain into a clean energy superpower and accelerating the journey to net zero.
Also set out in the letter was the plan for the department’s work to mobilise citizens, businesses, trade unions, civil society, and local government.
