(All) black culture to MSU
(Anthony) I feel like this is the third podcast I've said this about, but we're back after a little break after life lifing we are finally back. And I'm excited to be back. I'm glad to see both you guys across from me recording this podcast and yeah, okay, any opening thoughts?
(Shakyra and Anthony) Um, yeah, I'm good. I'm glad to be back here too. You know, it's been a minute since I use my podcast voice I guess. So. Yeah. Would you say you have one or just your regular voice? I would say I have one. Like, I tweet. My regular voice. I don't know. And the only thing I would say as I try to enunciate my words as good as possible, especially in moments where I'll talk a bit faster, so it could come off as clear. Yeah, you do. Have you seen over two hits? I'm sorry. Yes, five wouldn't remember it. Shoot. You're good. You know what I'm talking about? Yeah. You have to watch it, rewatch it, actually, you'll get it. But
(Anthony) I'm gonna have a call back to this later on. Be like, Oh, you think you were funny. But um, yeah, today's episode gonna be, we're gonna at least start off with giving him a black oriented but black sitcoms, black TV shows, Black movies, books, etc. And one, I guess start off with as West waves bite us as he leaves for the day. Um, and I was talking about this in my education minor class, but the hate you give. I've only seen the movie. And I didn't know it was a book. But that movie is, I would probably say top three favorite movies of all time. But it's one of those movies I can't like it's very hard to rewatch. We just dive in into it. I thought we're gonna talk about like the sitcoms first. Wait a minute, are we talking about the movies first, or? I mean, that's the first thing that came to mind. So I just, we can go back and forth. Um, you know, that's fair enough. But just like I was saying, it's one of those movies that it's hard for me to rewatch because of, obviously, the scenes, especially the scene where the young man gets pulled over and the whole, like, the thing that starts the movie movie. Yeah. And, yeah, it's just, it's such an important piece of media for black culture, in my opinion, because it's, it's unfortunately, a realistic thing that can happen if you're not careful enough, quote, unquote, or if you get pulled over if you just never know so, but it's a very powerful movie to me. And I can imagine a powerful book. And yeah, if I can transition to Jada or just give it to Jada, as far as her thoughts on maybe the hate you give or just another piece of TV or movie media.
(Jada) Yeah, no, um, I saw the hatred given movie on a class field trip actually, in high school. My sophomore year was at 10th grade. Yeah. i It wasn't a movie. I really liked the movie. I agree. It was a lot of it's not a movie, I could watch back to back a lot. I say there are a lot of scenes in the movie and kind of like you said, where we kind of had to pause and debrief the movie a little bit, like talking about it. And I know after we saw the movie, as a class, we kind of came back to school and we were like, Okay, can we just talk about what we saw? Cuz like, of course, we know it's like real life, but kind of like watching the movie like that. We were like, Oh, snap, like, this stuff. Like really, really happens. And I actually remember a lot of the black males in my class kind of have kind of really good like heart to heart with the movie because they was like, Wow, this kind of reality we have to live in and it's something that maybe could happen to me it could happen to my dad you know, it just got to really heart to heart and I was actually kind of proud of my class who took it like with such maturity I would definitely say I really liked the book more I'm kind of one of those people that say I like books over movies and I really do that he give book it goes really further in depth into like, like her dad's history and like the gang history in the movies and the different sides of where she grew up and when she moved and why they chose to put her in that school and the friends that she has and then decision to friends make a good sir which leads her to make a hard decision it just gets really in depth but it still follows that same like storyline of the movie of like what she was trying to prove towards the end basically like and then then like going deeper into like her friends like family life in in his story and stuff like that and that's it's a really good like, if you have a chance to read the book I say definitely read the book because it's really good.
(Anthony) Yeah and just the meaning of the phrase thug life in general. I mean, the hate you give literally offense F's over everybody, like that phrase combined with that last scene in the movie not to give spoilers even though it is an older movie but that dynamic it was just like wow, like I want I didn't even know what that meant, but to just to have the little boy there They're seeing what was happening is, it's crazy. But what say you Shakyra?
(Shakyra) About the history game in general? I mean, yeah, it was really a powerful movie. And apart from what we did I really liked what some of them I mean, you know, basic. I know I'm such a basic girl. Thank you. I appreciate that. But yeah, you know, it was a really good movie. I really want to watch it again. I liked the scene where what was her name was a star. I think the main character Yeah, who starred Right, right. Yeah, star. Yeah. You know, when her and her little, you know, like white friend classmate. They got into it, and she pulled out that brush and you know, she was like, tossing her with it. I was like, Yeah, see, I would have done the same thing because two out like row two, you know,
(Anthony) as hilarious as that scene is I mean like you know, it's funny it's hilarious like it's that deep that that's how and Chateau Sabrina carpets. I love her in general and how it's like she acted in that movie she did her role well, and that will be add a lot of parallels of it was a lot we got a whole conversation just on the AGM alone but to reference what I was messing with Shakyra before we started recording another black piece of TV media. I guess I'll just call this if we jump back and forth between movies and everything that I was telling her she don't know nothing about Sister sister.
(Shakyra) I do know very much so about Sister sister. I used to watch it as a child and I still watch it with my little brother who doesn't know about that show. That's how I got introduced to the Maury twins, you know? And it's crazy how like that was some people's first introduction to the miry twins because mine was um, twitches sister loved and movies and I really liked them too. And like twitches movie and then, um, their little brothers like a pretty good actor as well. Yeah. Oh, is this another movie? With all three of them? It's called 17. Again, oh my gosh, that's a great movie. I don't know if I've seen or not. You should watch it. It's a good movie. I was asking Shakyra And she knew instantly I was like, Okay, so the mother from Blackish. What is the show? Or is yeah, in black is what is the show she was in and then she was like girlfriends, I'm like, Yes, somebody put me hip that I want. I'm like, Oh, this is quality. This is a great show to actually the spin off of girlfriends is to gain what boyfriend's? No, no, no. It's the game. It's about um, basically, the game is a spin off. Yes. So it's funny because the mores when she's supposed to be the mom from blackish will Okay, so her character and girlfriend names is Joan Joan Clayton. So the more is when you know she played a character in the game. She's actually like the cousin of Joan or whatever. So they basically just like made her own storyline and things like that, but it's the go show. I love it is really do see I see why my parents did not let me watch that.
(Anthony) And Shakyra also had a hot take. I kept messing with her like, Oh, you don't even know none about Mario for real. She was like, well, actually, am I Oh, here we go.
(Shakyra and Anthony) I I just don't like it. I just feel like Martin Lawrence was doing way too much in that show. Like his comedy. I don't know. Like when comedians just like overdo it just hard to like, get people to laugh. I don't find it funny like me. Yeah. Now, would you say you have a specific type of humor or no? Oh, no, not really. Okay. Not that I can think of right now on top of my head. Whoa. Nah, nah. What about you, Jade? Just in general not about Martin.
(Jada) Um, you know, I need Loki I kind of agree with the Martin because there's some episodes that I find more funny than others. And I really got into Martin because my brother in law washes out a lot worse. That's kind of like one of the shows I see him replay. So that's when I kind of really watch it. Getting back into movies, though. I really like a lot of kind of like older black movies. So it's this thing in my family where my mom and my sister joke and they say oh, to be black. You gotta watch these specific criteria movies that dealt with Boys in the Hood. Never seen it poetic justice ever seen it juice? The juice that comes straight out of Compton when it came out. It's this. My bad because that was one that I didn't see for the longest and to give context. I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of movies. So that's why I keep saying like, Oh, no, no, but you were saying Jada my fault. Yeah. And then this one that. I mean, I feel like a lot of people know but it's called Moonlight. I don't know if y'all know. Jameson in it. Yeah, I think my man oh my gosh, yeah. I never seen it though. Yeah, it's a really good movie. It's a really sad movie, but it's really good. Because I gotta get into more like homosapien. duality in the black community. And then like, you know, a lot of black movies got gangs, drugs, poverty, that's kind of like the trifecta. Were Black movies. So when you think about a dancer is not in this, please. No, I know what you're talking about, though. But yeah, but yeah, I like I like movies like that. And I wasn't allowed to watch them at a certain age. But it got to the point where this was really my sister was it got to the point where she was like, Ma, I was watching all these movies with you if you don't show them these movies, like right now, like she took us to go Straight Outta Compton in theaters when it came out. It was no, it was because if you saw the first ever version like it was crazy. Crazy.
(All three) Sorry, we just had going deeper, we actually had some and we was like, and it was like, Can we say that? And I'll reference Houselights and Lance SF something and it was like, we have a podcast called going deeper. I think they'll be okay. Yeah, I think we'll be alright. Um, if I were to kind of put you on the spot a bit. Could you say the top three or top five? Top three is too hard movies. Every quote unquote, every black person should see or every black kid you see or have you? Ohmy god.
(Jada) All the ones I just say okay, let's start off. Well isn't good. Juice, straight out of Compton, poetic justice, The Color Purple, The Five Heartbeats, the temptations? The first like the Jackson family America dream documentary? I just feel like that's just a classic at this point. Yeah. Oh,
(Anthony) would you be able to rank them?
(Jada) Rank them? Oh, yeah. See? No only because all of those movies, they deal with different stuff. Like I wouldn't put the Five Heartbeats and the temptations in a category with like juice. Because it deals with different stuff. These are like Black groups and their rise to fame and everything they went through. And then this is about, you know, in the neighborhood in the hood, kids just trying to make it out and who survive and who don't. So it's kind of like it's, it's like two different tiers with like, movies and stuff, but they're all really good. I've seen all of those like multiple times. I love all of them.
(Anthony) Um, another thing that I didn't know another embarrassing thing. So I had recently found out that Janet Jackson act, and that she was in poetic justice with Tupac. And how I found out
(Shakyra) that's another thing all the Tyler Perry movies even though I really started not to like Tyler Perry movies, not that I'm older because it's just like he seemed like that he constantly attacked black women in the movies to me and my personal opinion, but
(Jada) you know, lowkey, I feel let's let's talk about that though. Because that's Tyler Perry. That's the one like person I feel like a lot of people are starting to realize that now. Yeah, especially on Twitter because everybody's like, Okay, can we talk about how he's just making a mockery? And I'm like, You're no wrong. Me was laughing why? Like, why do every protagonist black woman in a movie always had to get like hurt by a man or her husband? That was just cheating or so like, why be hell on earth? Like, it's not funny. It's not funny. But if you look at the stories, it's like, okay, she bought the Hudson breakthrough. She bought the cry. The family gonna try to help her to her school and be like, No, you might want me Come on. It's just gonna be that and then and they're gonna be oh, you know? Like, can we have a different movie? Maybe fleeing? I will say another movie you have to watch if you're considered Black is Hustle and Flow. Share one of those two. That's a good old cool classic right there. It's so crazy. Most of the movies are named I haven't ever seen this is pretty bad. It's getting bad. You gotta get a president. Oh no, I don't even like so far. Have you seen Malcolm X? Now yes, yeah. You see 13 Now
(All three) no, wait, you see, Hold on. Wait a minute. Okay, that's fair. You You will skip the water movies and see here you didn't come out 2019 I think because we were I was in quarantine when I was watching it. So yeah, the ones I've seen like mainly like black lead actors. I've seen the first Friday. Harry it. Wait, so you do watch Friday so you didn't see the nope, nope. Next Friday is the best Friday I don't care I'm sorry. Unfortunately he can't give an opinion on it. Are we there yet? Well, Ice Cube and I think I've seen all three or two hybrid because they multiple Yeah. Three Two by I've seen all of them. I don't remember him but I've seen I know I've seen like a series to um, obviously the hate you give we talked about earlier. That one coming to America is I've seen I've seen both actually. Yeah. Okay, so what is your opinion on the remake? I didn't like it. Cool. I like it because it's Hey, Jana Taylor and she killed her row. She's a goddess. I love her. But yeah, I've seen the First Men in Black. I haven't watched. Oh my gosh, I don't think this will. It could be considered a black classic but rush hour. Rush Hour. Oh my god, I was where I watched those recently in my life and those were incredible. What am I wrong along with ice cube and I'm Kevin Hart. Yeah, yeah. had to sit it out. I don't think I've seen it. I'm just asking Have y'all seen these? Like shaft and stuff? Oh, yeah. I've seen a central intelligence. Have y'all seen Central Intelligence? Rockin Kevin Hart? I never watched it yet. It's fine to me. From what I remember. I'm a yeah, those ones that come to least as far as the ones I have watched. But there's a unfortunate very long list of ones I have not. But to think of. I'm your boy, you might say some Shakyra? No. Just to think of black cartoons a bit. Obviously. We have probably you can make argument for the greatest black cartoon of all time proud family.
(Anthony and Shakyra) I don't consider it a cartoon because it was more adult. I mean, it's an adult cartoon. Yeah, well, I feel is a different category. like Family Guy is a adult person was not really. I mean, shout out me for kissing her and Boondocks is clearly Boondocks, but okay, I would say if we're just like white kid casually type thing I would say proud family and then even though I didn't watch this, a lot of people hold static shock to a very high standard. But I've seen a scene of and I can get why people hold it's a high regard because yeah, it tackles a lot of like serious issues like it was on like stereotyping and getting through things and stuff like that. So yeah, but anything that comes to mind I'll between you two as far as anything else black.
(All three) I mean, I all I have is a dot shows like The PJ Black Dynamite PJs. You've never seen the PJs before. It's a stupid. I mean, it's not stupid, but it's a stupid show. It's just It's funny to me. I don't know. Off the loop. Yeah, black that was Black Dynamite rock dynamite. It's like a kung fu karate show. type stuff. Black Lightning I don't know what that is. That's my so I love that. So why got finished? I fell off. That's why it has to be my favorite villa. I'm sorry. You sound just like somebody I'm talking my uncle rockers but man, but um, I guess while we are talking or looking for forms of media. What are some favorite black characters and it could be movies TV shows like that. Some that stand out to you wil just kidding. I don't gotta come in for that. No, my guys. I mean. To be fair, though, I'd be lying a little bit when I was a kid. Yeah, like you said in the previous podcast separate the art from artists. Yes. I don't go in deeper. But yeah, even not he another one. That's another person. I'm like, No. Did y'all watch The Cosby Show? Yes. I watched a little bit. I watched a little bit I didn't really like it that much. Yeah, it was I Yeah, but like you're when you compare it to shows like my favorite of all time the Bernie Mac show. Like yeah, like that's my type of humor. I like, Bernie Let's rip Bernie made out. That was my guy, man. Welcome to my wife and kids. That's another really good one. Now you Now hear me out. This is not a black show. But just for the culture. I gotta shout it out. Shout out George Lopez. It just it just came over every time I was sleeping. What am I watch? No, but I watched like the whole like season like because I wanted to and it was really funny. Like, I liked it. Yeah. And I was that kid to stay up just for George Lopez and the theme song. Fun fact. My granddad he used to love that song. I think it's I forgot the name but it's just it's about this band called War but yeah, he used to love that song a lot. So that's why I like it. Yeah, but yeah. Dr. Vasser Oh, my bad stuff and before that's the agenda and Ant Farm you just reminded me Yeah, I don't know. I'm trying to look up some stuff to see what I didn't watch. I'm trying to look ish. Oh yeah there's also I say if we get if we don't want to keep it like solely Black Media then we can like I mean we go fire fair SpongeBob is a big even though for me I wasn't really allowed to watch SpongeBob hold another conversation but um I Like Good Luck Charlie and Doc oh crap on Dog with a Blog a lot of blood and they brought the kids in to talk yeah I did not like was Austin Oh we got me on my Roku oh my gosh I love Oh no I did not like shaking like it was a storyline it's fun it wasn't shaking did the show or the song came up first? Especially shake it off is by Taylor Swift which one came first? Anyways, um I'm not sure what's the theme song like oh did the theme song come first? They came I would hope they come You said oh my god bro. One I'm in the unpopular side of I really liked bizaardvark Like that was Olivia. Arrigo I started watching Disney turn on when that show came out it isn't it when he went down Yeah, barely watched me either. Just reminds me of um because like y'all just said newer cartoons like I was talking about this the other day like why is it so bright? I wasn't animation so like not even HD like because but to be fair, I was one of those kids saying we all got glasses wearing glasses but one shot I do want to give credit to I don't know if you guys are familiar with this Craig of the creek Cartoon Network like that. That's one of the last in my opinion one of the last bit of like new good cards especially black cards. Yes our watches that show you know that's a raven was my show to love her. And Korean houses another good one too. Oh, they made like another black sitcom or Disney sitcom called Saturdays. I never watched I never really got more say isn't it? Oh my St Martin. I guess that's an old black is grown ish. Yeah. So I heard it was a good show though. I've never watched it so only come on on Saturday or shot I don't know why the Saturdays reminded me of the Thundermans Did y'all watch Thundermans on Nickelodeon so so I watched Game shakers will only because my little cousin maybe it was I did y'all watch every which way? No, it was I've read that's one of my favorites. Oh house. I'm a novice. Y'all remember? So I watched him I couldn't really get into it was a little bit too much on the other side for me. I want to I want to I want to call it creepy, but I'm able to watch what was that? I don't know if y'all know what was that show? We're like, Oh my god. I can't remember. I don't even know how to describe it. It was like I think it was vampires. Like they were in the house babysitters and are not my babies too, but like they were in that they had the family have bought a haunted house. And it was like no, it was Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Please start talking when he also I can find this show because I don't know how to describe it. House with vampires. I don't even know it could it could not be vampires. It was a Nickelodeon show they have bought the house or was a ghost and it's like they were like they were called vampire shadow lab rats by the way that's another great thing KC undercover Nickelodeon show they could not be a vampire so that's that's why it could be family by heart you know was a good show or good new show de la house. Oh no. My nephew love Oh my god and then we can get into like Sanjay and Craig are you off here? No no, no, you awesome All right. What about family and jumps on let me take you back a bit because um, we were I was talking with somebody and I can even ask y'all we were doing like top five like Nickelodeon cartoons cartoon network Disney Channel. And in my top five like Nickelodeon cartoons I had mighty be my life as a teenage robot. Barely I parents and then first of all, my fate cut me off my list. Why one of our CO hosts Shakyra don't like finally Fairly Oddparents sorry, I don't like I couldn't understand My name is Brett I guess I get it your parents don't like you date they you was a mistake for one I get it but it just like Shakyra That alone yes I understand that but it's just like grow up well, he was 10 That's why each collab because this was a conversation because it was this Jimmy Neutron that's why every collab Timmy was better no like I don't know I resonate with Jimmy Neutron you what you read the reason I listen I am smart. Why kill him? He is. I love dog Why come on now? superpower in mind and a power of okayness but um yeah, that was that blew my mind. But what was the last two shows in my time? I don't remember from Nickelodeon, but like, Nick. It was I combined Nickelodeon and Nicktoons because same network but and then we talked about, like, just the person I was talking with, like Nick Jr. Shows like, robot monster. Yes. So you don't watch that? Not really. That's like a feel like fever dream? Yeah, um what else? Oh, I'm Ned declassify. Oh, survivors. Okay, can you talk about the shadow them by the way? First of all, shout out them. I love that show. But to figure out that the two main stars actually dating No, not just a phase right now. Typed. They review everything in that podcast. And I vividly remember me watching those episodes. And I'm just like, wow, that's what I was doing during breaks is that this is what was happening with all my commercial time. I get it. But there's a time and a place. And we just get out the episode with How do y'all feel? There's a good question I have How do you feel about like Nickelodeon shows reboots? Like there's only one or two? Oh, who was just talking about that? I think we were just talking about that and Houselights We were just talking about like, what should be brought back in general. And I'm sorry I didn't like sorry one or two. I didn't like one or two either. Is iCarly not that was a good I didn't like oh my god. I felt like they did cancel it I feel like with like Nickelodeon shows or like shows that were like kids shows. You have just got to figure out how to win it Yeah, make your adult but not make your cringy adult Yeah, and I totally was kind of like Zoey went off to a so cringe bro. And I was really happy because I will I'm a die hard Zoey one on one fan. But to see that I will Are you serious? You got a favorite episode? Because I I have a clear favorite. favorite episode. I mean, obviously when Zoe and Tracy got together and I was like finally, the prom when Quinn and Logan confessed they love in front of everybody a kiss. I love that.
(Jada and Anthony) This kind of early episode I loved it. When was it? What was the episode where Zoey and I'm forgetting the cat's name but they're like cheerleaders and they were chilling in the Logan because he was like yeah, it was like you are eat like rejected or something out. That was a good episode. And then it's another rejected. Day. Wow. Yes, sir. Check. Yeah, Logan was just like, are y'all serious? It was like my favorite episode pun con intended hands down is when they had their hand on the car. And they She tricked out to take his hand down. I love it. Yeah, that was a good episode. That was a good show. I don't think I would have been able to win that because I would have to pee. I'm hungry. Right? You got to sleep. By my hand goes live. You gotta hit one of these. You gotta sleep. But yeah, but they did not do one or two. Good. Yeah, as far as as far as your question on reboots. For the most part. I feel like just leave it alone. Like, especially if it's a classic. Like, please don't reboot it. But there are a few instances of good reboots. Like I really love this might be a such a random one. But the DuckTales reboot.
(All three) Watch. You watch that. I know this shout out. I watched it. I was like, what, what is that? What is this? But for the most part? I'm not a fan of reboots because it's done. It's never really done. Right? Yeah. Because you can't really capture that same memory. If they make if they tweak it on then it just yeah, like what was it right was home. I mean, that was that was example? Yeah. I feel like it went too long. Yeah. And then like, I don't know if these would be considered reboots, but like Teen Titans Go, I really liked Teen Titans Go. Um, there was another one out the Powerpuff Girls reboot. I liked there. reboots. Are y'all going see that news? Where they had like the black girl? The black Powerpuff Girl? Black Power pot? Yeah, it was black. Well, yeah, you're in the reboot because I know it was like a black girl was I don't care. Remember she was a villain or a hero. That will come in some episodes. But is that the front of the reboot? I didn't know they were getting a reboot, like in 26 Yeah, some years ago. Oh no. Oh, they stopped. Oh, I know why my server isn't one original. Oh, that was three of my cartoons. Yeah, watch the original one for sure. Yeah, sugar, spice. Oh yeah. Yeah, I remember Open Season Yes. You don't remember over the heads? No, because I think I prefer to Open Season over over the head. Why? X like 910 you ruin me Shakyra was talking off the mic to have like the 2017 was six years ago. Like
(Shakyra) when I tell you my little sister was born in 2016 She was she's about to be seven this month. I was like, Are you serious? I was 13 going on 14 When she was born
(Anthony) That is how math works and it's crazy because wow 20 years old going on 21 But with that being said as we approach the 31 minute mark Do you guys have anything I want to like another show or movie but cetera I want
(Shakyra) Hot take I didn't like Phineas and Ferb
(All three) what oh, you're not cool. To like, like I said, I think I said this only like Perry and then Dr. Doofenshmirtz part. That's the only part I like it was a show everything else can go. I mean, now they make it like a spin off. They should have their own show. Spin Off Milo's Milo Murphy's Law. I never watched it, but it's called Milo Murphy's Law. Oh, Marlo Murphy's Law, which is one of the Disney Channel top cartoons I love fish looks. Fish, like a fish that type of guy. I mean, no, no. Listen, just everyday loud, just randomly get close. Okay, you but you had those classmates that look like they watched all type of stuff like Gravity Falls. Here's my favorite. Cookie. I was just like on the IMS with big city Greenberg Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb. Did y'all watch 90s Nickelodeon shows like hey man All Grown Up that's my show. Like that's an example that I felt like they did a reboot wrong when they made them grow no no no the regrets movies though. Oh wait the second one the parent one is the one that went to parents when Chucky good the whole plane scene and it's just sad and everybody got a parent and Chucky like to relate that's why I don't like it that's funny. We all should be talking like that all the time relatable. I'm like, just just a peon data one of the most overrated 90 zeros I think is in 90s of all time, med men and MIDI and Edie and Edie. Either way we're talking about man. Miss Knobloch? No actually my favorite guys characters because I love the tween Dylan feeling little Chucky? Yeah. I like them. I like was cute. I like Chucky. And then I liked the twins being a twin because they were funny. You know? Lucky heartache. Angelica was that girl. I am gonna hold you up. No, I won't go that far but I get her to do she spasming oh wait, I'll cancel Yeah.
