As you sit and read this I hope you know that all around you are millions and billions of other galaxies, going about their business. What’s that you say? Preposterous you say? I’m afraid not, for you see, your galaxy is but one in an endless, immeasurable array of galaxies. From the completely aquatic star cluster of Nimbus Major to the feather lined creation that is Peacock Ursula, YOUR galaxy is just one in a series. It is completely unique and different to all of the others, just as all the others are completely different to yours.
At this very moment, these other strange and distant life forms are cooking dinner, waging intergalactic wars and yes, some are even listening to this very book. Yet, all we know for certain about these creatures is that very few of them have the faintest idea that the other exists. Don’t feel rejected by this mind bending piece of information though, for you see, there is one thing that links all of our worlds together. Oh yes, there exists something that you share in common with the Pig-Men of Troglodon, or the flatulent vapours of The Whistleplains. It is one simple word and all of the creatures in all of the heavens have it in common.
This word was first documented in the distant lands of Quillnomia, where people have pens for fingers, ink for blood and write down every thought they have ever had. Once there, you would find a book called The Ultimate, Definitive, Never To Be Bettered, Big Book Of Words. In it is contained every language and every syllable of all the galaxies ever created, even the dusty old ones up the back that everyone has forgotten about. It is here, in this book that we find the one, the single word known to all who live and breathe.
It is found in the ‘F’ section between the words Fartyramalinglong (An event so brilliant that it makes one excrete an odorous gas) and Falphymania (an extreme love for the small, furry and highly poisonous alien creature known as, The Falph). The only word known in all one squillion, seven hundred and fifty two languages in all creation is this one;
FEAR
The Ultimate, Definitive, Never To Be Bettered, Big Book Of Words defines ‘Fear’ as “a feeling not unlike having lumpy gravy stirred in the pit of ones stomach.” Yet, we know that it is far more than that. Fear is a feeling that chews on your bones and nibbles at your toes. It is a sensation that squeezes your innards in a vice like grip and forces fluids and sweats in all directions. It paints the world in dark shadows and causes your mind and knees to shudder and crack in terror. Fear is mind numbingly awful and eye wateringly bad. It causes the bravest creatures to vomit and even the most courageous of heroes to visit the toilet frequently. It is fear that stops great beings from doing great things, fear that makes the biggest souls in the universe feel like the smallest and it is fear that brings us to a young boy named, Sam.
