[00:00:00] Mark: Welcome to bit rate the show about podcast culture. I'm Mark Steadman. And as you probably know, were on a brief hiatus at the moment. It's been a couple of weeks since we last spoke. So I wanted to pop in and let you know that we're still around. Uh, and to point you in the direction of something tangentially related that I'm doing every day in August.
[00:00:20] The dog days of podcasting challenge is an attempt to record an episode of a podcast every day in August. Um, currently four days in and having a blast. Um, I'm doing a show called mixdown, which is a sub five minute show for podcasters with deadlines. So it says the little tagline. Uh, so it's all about podcasts, productivity, and ways to make your life a little easier and shave off some valuable seconds, which is especially useful.

And as a bonus, I thought I'd include tomorrow's episode for you now. As a record it's Saturday, the 4th of August, and I've just finished episode five. Sub five minute podcast focusing on a different podcasting productivity tip each day and today, um, you know, the phrase, the best camera is the one that you have with you at the time.
[00:01:53] Well, if the idea or the subject or the mood is right, then the same is true. Um, Kevin Smith. I remember years ago for his SquadCast show, uh, interviewed Richard Brunson on a plane. It wasn't planned. He was in first class. Uh, Branson was in first class. They just happened to be sat across the aisle or whatever.
[00:02:13] And Smith came over to them and they just sat and had a talk. Um, and he put it down and I think he probably recorded it on his phone. Uh, the phone is a good start. Um, but I would say if you're, if this kind of idea. Inspires you, or you're thinking the kind of show that you want to do, um, involves speaking to lots of different people or it's the kind of thing where serendipity or an idea might strike you and you want to be able to act on it.
[00:02:39] Then I would consider getting one of the cheaper plastic. The recorders and zooms have great mix. This isn't an ad. I'm not being paid to tell you this. Um, but I've used zooms for the last 10 years. Uh, and they've got, they've got lovely mix and really, really good sound, uh, in, in my opinion. Um, and the H one, uh, is a very, very plastic-y, but very, very light.
[00:03:01] Um, it's probably lighter than your phone actually, but it's. Um, if you do consider this and I would recommend it, uh, I have one that is in my go-bag, um, then definitely get the accessory kit because that includes a wind sock, uh, which you absolutely need because the mics are completely exposed. Um, and it also includes a plastic handle, which if you're going to be waving the zoom around, uh, in people's faces, you absolutely need because you screw it into where the iPod, uh, sorry, where, where the tripod.
[00:03:30] The threaded screw thing goes, you just screw that in and then you can wave the thing around and you won't get that horrible plasticky noise that you get. Um, when your fingers are all over the device really, really, really recommend doing that. Um, you can also get a tripod from, you know, a pound shop or a dollar store.
[00:03:47] Um, and, and you know, that could do a similar thing, but also of course, if you're going to be interviewing someone at a desk or a table, then you don't want to put the device directly on the table because you, you will just end up with table vibration. Um, get yourself a 16 gig or smaller SD card. You could probably get away with a four gig if you're just going to be doing short chats, uh, record loss.
[00:04:07] Lossless if you can. Take it down to MP3, just because it's always best to have the highest quality possible, because then you can always, you can always bounce it down or mix it down. Um, you can never sort of improve the quality and then just drop it in your bag. Um, wherever you go, uh, you know, depending on how you travel, um, my bag.
[00:04:27] Uh, a little bit insane. Um, I've got too many things in there, but I kind of, I kind of liked that to a degree, uh, but none of them wants to travel like that. So something like, uh, the zoom H one could be great because you really can just almost pocket that. Um, I did a podcast a few years ago in Cardiff and I recorded the whole thing apart from the duration, everything else was recorded on the zoom and it sounds.
[00:04:50] Brilliant. It was in stereo. The thing cost me, you know, I don't know, 80, 80 pounds, like it wasn't, you know, for, for, for what I got out of it, it wasn't that much and I would highly recommend it. Um, the other option, of course, like I said, is the phone, um, apps, like just press record. You've also got the voice memo thing, but just press record is a lovely app.
[00:05:08] Really, really simple. You can do it on your watch as well. If you're so inclined, obviously phone and iPad, um, and that exports out to, uh, to Dropbox, uh, among other places, uh, that can be. Clumsy sometimes, but I think that's more the Dropbox problem. Um, so tomorrow, uh, we're going to cover a topic dear to my heart because it's nerdy and it doesn't actually relate to Dropbox.
