Shockingly Cultured

In this podcast, we explore the experience of adapting to new environments and cultures, including first-hand observations from a guest from Mauritius.

What is Shockingly Cultured?

Shockingly Cultured is a podcast about the moments when Canada feels unfamiliar—even to Canadians. Whether it’s newcomers learning a new culture, small-town residents moving to big cities, or people discovering unexpected differences across provinces and workplaces. Each episode captures the challenges and surprises of starting over.

From Home to Unknown is about the experiences of people who’ve come from around the world to live in Canada. We start with the observations of our hosts, who've had their own experiences of culture shock after moving to Ottawa. Matthew Grieve brings in the Quebecoise angle, while Vasuman Ravichandran sheds light in his move from South India to Ontario. We also talk about newcomers' first impressions of Canada, how they've adapted and what they've learnt about Canada and themselves. We have a special guest, Sanjeev Raghoobur, a Mauritian student at Algonquin College, Ottawa. He talks about the experiences he’s had while soaking in Canadian culture.
