Blindsighted isn’t just a podcast—it’s a lifeline for those walking through the darkest valleys. Hosted by Karen and Todd Hornsby, this raw and unfiltered series invites you into a story marked by unimaginable pain, loss, and suffering.
But this isn’t just about our story. It’s about YOUR story, too.
We’re not here to sugarcoat suffering or offer feel-good inspiration that fades by morning. We’re here to validate the ache, the confusion, and the questions that come when life doesn’t make sense—and when God feels far away.
The name Blindsighted is rooted in the phenomenon of “blindsight”—where people without sight are still drawn to light they cannot see. That’s what faith feels like sometimes. And in our journey, we’ve learned:
- Faith doesn’t make life easy—it makes it possible.
- Trusting God’s plan doesn’t mean understanding it.
- Victory doesn’t mean escaping suffering—it means enduring with strength, honesty, and hope.
Each episode of Blindsighted peels back the layers of our journey through our daughter’s cancer battle, a near-fatal car accident, health diagnoses, and more. We speak candidly about the moments that broke us—and the God who met us there.
If you’re walking through something that feels impossible, we want you to know: you're not alone. There’s light—even if you can’t see it yet.
Join us. Let’s find victory in the midst of suffering, together.
The miracle wasn't the end of
Speaker 2:the
Speaker 1:story. It was the beginning of a message. I should have died in that wreck. A fire surrounded me, a metal cage crushing in, and yet I walked out, not even a scratch. But if all we see is the rescue, we've missed the revelation.
Speaker 1:Because what happened in those flames was more than survival. It was strategy. In today's episode, I want to pull back the veil on what God was doing beneath the miracle. We're going to talk about the kind of provision that's already in motion before we even know to pray. The danger of letting someone else decide when your story is finished, and how fear isn't the enemy, but living afraid is.
Speaker 1:This was more than a dramatic rescue. It was a defined setup, a holy preview of the pain I didn't know was coming. And if you're walking through the fire, wondering if God still shows up, let this be your reminder, He's already ahead of you. So let's go back to the wreck and find the meaning behind the miracle.
Speaker 2:Last time on Blindsided, we really got into detail about your terrible car accident, which honestly should have taken your life. Right?
Speaker 1:Sure. Absolutely.
Speaker 2:So just to kind of recap, for our listeners that haven't had the opportunity yet to listen to the last two episodes, you hit the back end of a log truck, car catches on fire, people try to get you out that are on the scene. They can't get you out because the doors are wed shut due to the impact of the accident. There again, the car is on fire. Let's not forget that. But God, when everything else seems hopeless and helpless, God sends a state trooper your way that was not called to the accident.
Speaker 2:Right?
Speaker 1:That's correct. Yep.
Speaker 2:Melton Brown, Florida Highway Patrol shows up at the accident. Initially doesn't even think there's anybody in the car with the way everyone's just kinda standing around. He's made aware that there's someone in the car. He risked his own life, grabs his fire extinguisher, puts out as many of the flames as he can. He's able to finally get to the car door.
Speaker 2:He bends the car door in half. Supernatural thing just took place. He could not do it in his own strength. God absolutely gave him the strength to bend that door in half. He's finally able to get more of the flames out inside your vehicle, get you out, literally run across the street and a few seconds later, your car explodes.
Speaker 2:Yeah. That's like a scene out of a Hollywood action series. Right?
Speaker 1:It is. It's very true. And so you're right. It's a it was a miraculous moment. But today's episode to me is the most important.
Speaker 2:Sure.
Speaker 1:Because you can listen to a lot of podcasts and get a lot of inspirational stories and encouragement, learn about the Bible from a lot more eloquent people, speakers, should say, than even you and I. But the reason why we want to share this is because we want to share the meaning behind the miracle.
Speaker 2:Sure.
Speaker 1:That's what's important. It's a great story and it's wonderful to hear about what God did, of course. But we have to have some takeaways from these big moments when God shows up on the scene. So yeah, so we're we're really wanting to focus on the meaning behind the miracle. And as I have reflected on this whole process, I've wondered, you know, was this more about a miraculous move of God or was it actually orchestrated?
Speaker 1:Was it intentional? Was it God preparing me for something greater before I even saw the smoke?
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 1:So one of the I'd say one of the big moments for me, some of my takeaways, and again, that's what we're here for today is to share these points. One of those big moments for me is God has already made provision. So here's what I want to do. I want to take us back to Mark sixteen:one.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:In that in that part of the Bible, in Mark 16, it talks about when Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome go to the tomb where Jesus has been buried. You know, they go to the marketplace, they buy these spices, and they're going to go anoint Jesus with these spices that they have gotten. In Mark sixteen three, it says that the women begin to talk among themselves and say, hey, who will roll away the stone? Right? So they're having this conversation.
Speaker 1:If you bring it to modern day terms and where we are today is like, hey, girl, you know, we've been doing Pilates, but, you know, I'm not sure who's gonna be able to move this stone. What are we gonna do when we get there? Sure. So here's something they're talking about and worried and anxious about. But when they get there to the tomb, they see that the stone has been rolled away.
Speaker 1:So the very thing that they were anxious about and that they were worried about, God had already started making provision for.
Speaker 2:Praise God.
Speaker 1:Right. So I relate that to my accident in a way that before I even knew I needed him, I didn't even know, honestly, the moment I needed him. I'm knocked unconscious. But even that morning before I woke up, God had already started putting into motion all the things that needed to take place for Milton Brown to be there at that very moment, at that exact time to roll away milestone.
Speaker 2:God's really good at always providing an answer when we don't even know there's a problem.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:The only thing is sometimes the answer is not exactly what we're expecting.
Speaker 1:That is exactly right. I wanna say this. I'm gonna read it just to make sure that I I say it right. The first thing I want us all to hold on to is this. You may be panicking, but God is already providing.
Speaker 2:Wow. It's good.
Speaker 1:He is. The things we're trying to make spreadsheets of and data points of and trying to figure out, just like these three women were on the way to the the tomb, God already rolled the stone away, just like He did for me. He had already started putting in motion things to take place so that Milton Brown could be the instrument that God would use to save my life. He had already rolled back my stone, and I didn't know he had.
Speaker 2:Wow. That's great.
Speaker 1:Another great point that I was able to walk away with from this incident was don't let what it looks like decide what's possible.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:A lot of times we want to look at something and that tells us, oh, this is going to be the outcome. Right. Just like it was at the crucifixion. So let's go back to the crucifixion. All of these witnesses are standing around and they're looking.
Speaker 1:They're seeing where Jesus has been beaten and battered and dying at a horrible death. And these are people that loved him. What they're looking at, it's done. It's over. It's finished.
Speaker 2:It's the end.
Speaker 1:It's the end. Right? It is all finished. I can relate to this. In my accident, as you've already alluded to when we in the opening, there were there were these bystanders looking, watching.
Speaker 1:What do we do? This looks hopeless. Looks less. There's nothing that we can do. Paralyzed in their fear
Speaker 2:Right.
Speaker 1:For their own life. And as you said, one person did try, but why would I try? They've already failed. And they're they're just watching, and what looked like was over to them actually wasn't.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 1:So again, don't let what it looks like decide what's possible. Because when Milton Brown showed up on the scene, he didn't let the finality of what it looked like determine for him what he was gonna do. Once he knew exactly what was going on, he didn't go back and say, oh, I'm gonna watch with all these other witnesses what's going down. Oh, yes, she's done. Just as you had already said too.
Speaker 1:Some of the EMTs had already been told she's gone. It's done. Especially for the way it looked. That car was completely engulfed in flames. It was done.
Speaker 1:It was over. There's no hope. What are we gonna do? All we can do is just watch it fall apart. Sure.
Speaker 1:So just like many people feel like they're finished, they've lost all their purpose. It all looks bad. All we can do is just sit back and watch it fall apart. And we've all had witnesses sit there and watch us and our worlds fall apart. But I like to say this, if the tomb couldn't hold Jesus, and if the flames couldn't end my story, neither will it theirs.
Speaker 2:And as you're talking about the crucifixion, I always find it interesting how none of the disciples were with the three ladies when they went to the tomb, primarily Peter.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:And Oh, yeah. It's so interesting how Peter denied Jesus three times before he was crucified and how he bitterly wept. And the Bible talks about how in the days after the crucifixion before the resurrection that Peter is like, okay, I'm going back to being a fisherman. I've made too many mistakes. I've messed this up so bad.
Speaker 2:I don't deserve God's or Jesus' love. I don't deserve the promises that he said he has for us. So my story's over. Yeah. That's what Peter's saying.
Speaker 2:I'm done. I'm going back to the way things were. It's over for me.
Speaker 1:Yes. But Jesus said, go tell the disciples what you have seen and Peter. Amen. Because, Todd, you know who gets to decide when we're finished? Only God.
Speaker 1:Only God can make that decision. We can't declare when our story's over, and we for sure don't need to give the power to others to determine when our story is over either.
Speaker 2:Amen.
Speaker 1:I I wanna also point out that another huge moment for me and Todd, you're gonna really relate to this because I I actually heard this from a Navy SEAL in one of his speeches, I should say, about how we need to be ready, not afraid.
Speaker 2:Amen. Well, I'm thankful that you're comparing me to a Navy SEAL. So let me just bask in that for just a second. But you're right. So just like you have said, we've got two choices.
Speaker 2:We can either be afraid or we can be ready. So I know in the military and even in law enforcement in looking at it from a carnal worldly point of view, you train and you train and you train. So when an emergency situation arises, you're not really thinking it's second nature, it's muscle memory. You've done this type of thing over and over. So when the bullets are flying or someone has been injured and you've got to act, not having to think about it, you're just responding.
Speaker 1:You're ready.
Speaker 2:You're ready. You are absolutely ready. So also if you flip it to a spiritual point of view, the Bible clearly says we're to put on the whole armor of God. So if you wait around till you're in the fire, till you're in the fight, till you're in a spiritual battle to put on the armor, it's too late. When those fiery darts from the enemy are coming our way, we've got to have that shield of faith already ready in front of us.
Speaker 2:You've gotta be ready.
Speaker 1:You do have to be ready. Because here's what I wanna point out. Fear is obviously a God given emotion. You know, we all have fear. We all experience fear.
Speaker 1:But here's where fear becomes a problem. It becomes a problem when it's no longer a feeling, and it becomes your guide. Fear is not wrong. It's when we allow it to cause us to live afraid. And that's what the enemy wants us to do.
Speaker 1:He wants us to live afraid. So when we think back on my accident, all of these witnesses that are standing back, why were they standing back? Why were they watching? They were afraid.
Speaker 2:Sure.
Speaker 1:They weren't ready. They were paralyzed in their fear. But when Milton showed up on the scene, the instrument of God, he was ready.
Speaker 2:Absolutely.
Speaker 1:He didn't again allow the flames to back him off. He knew who had his back. And he did not allow fear to keep him from moving into my greatest moment of need. It's interesting since we have been sharing this story. I'm telling it now again for the first time in in this amount of detail for the first time in years.
Speaker 1:Sure. I've not, you know, went this deep into the story. As you alluded to, there's there's more. But as I reflected on this now at the age that I am versus the age of 19 when all of this, you know, first happened, I obviously have a different lens. Right?
Speaker 1:I have a different way of seeing some of these things, Some of the things that we have just spoken about that has really changed my life. I would say now, me and you being where we are today, knowing what we know, I can't help but wonder, Todd, if God allowing me to be in that car accident was him setting me up. Was it a divine setup? Because I would really like to say that after that accident, life got easier, but I can't. It got harder.
Speaker 1:I walked through a lot of heartache, through a lot of pain, through a lot of suffering. You know, when I survived those flames, I would have never thought it was preparing me for such deep suffering.
Speaker 2:Well, and it's so true. As we've heard it said before, God never wastes our suffering.
Speaker 1:He doesn't. He doesn't waste our suffering. There is a purpose for everything, whether we like it or not. There is a purpose for everything that God allows to happen.
Speaker 2:Amen.
Speaker 1:And I do believe because God allowed this to happen, Todd, I was able to reflect back on that day. In some of the stories that we're gonna be revealing in future seasons, I was able to go back and you say, you know what? I remember that moment when I didn't know how desperate I needed God. He had already rolled my stone away. He had already moved.
Speaker 1:He had already orchestrated. And the things that I've been anxious about, the things I've been fearful of, the things that I'm like, how can I recover from this loss? I looked back on this and said, you know what? He hadn't changed.
Speaker 2:That's right.
Speaker 1:He's the same God. So it gave me something to hold on to. So maybe whatever you're facing today, whatever battle you're going through, I wonder if we could flip the script a little bit and say, you know what? I wonder if this is a divine setup.
Speaker 2:Amen. And it's we've showcased this season and how God miraculously saved you. Yeah. And that's wonderful. Yeah.
Speaker 2:In some future episodes, future seasons, you've alluded to, we're not gonna have all those I don't know if you wanna call them mountaintop moments or not, there's gonna be some valleys. So it's not Todd and Karen bouncing from blessing to blessing to blessing. That's not the case because we've come to realize sometimes the miracle is in the rescue. You got rescued from your car. So sometimes the miracle is in the rescue.
Speaker 2:Sometimes the miracle is simply surviving grief.
Speaker 1:Amen. In the future episodes and future seasons, I should say, we hope people follow along with us because this is just the beginning of the story.
Speaker 2:Yes, it is.
Speaker 1:So we really hope that people will follow along with us. As we've said before, we would love it if you would like, share, subscribe, comment, engage with us because we really want this podcast to reach those that are in need. How many times, Todd, were we in situations where we heard the right preacher, the right song, the right word from a friend, you know, whatever it may have been. And it was like, that was so great. And we really want this podcast to be just that.
Speaker 2:Well, and we used to call them little nuggets of gold.
Speaker 1:Right. Yeah.
Speaker 2:And to to to go along with what you're saying, I would love people to go to the website.
Speaker 1:Right. Yes. Yes. We want them to go to the website. They can find us at blindsightedpodcast.com.
Speaker 1:Of course, remember it's blindsighted. That's where you can find us blindsidedpodcast.com. And of course, you can find us on all of our social media platforms at blindsidedpodcast. We really would love to pray with them.
Speaker 2:We absolutely wanna be there to help minister to people. We wanna hear their stories. And the reason I bring up the podcast is like you said, a lot of times we listen to a song and it was the perfect song for us. And I'm just gonna brag a little bit on you. You're an amazing vocalist.
Speaker 2:You've got a wonderful album that was birthed from all the hardship and struggles and amazing revelations that God, revealed to us. So your album is there. So besides this podcast, when they're driving down the road Yeah. Wherever they may be, they can hear these songs that I know are gonna minister to them because they've ministered to me.
Speaker 1:Yeah. That's true. That is definitely another resource we have out there for people to to listen to. We would love for them to do that. So thank you again for following along with us.
Speaker 1:We pray that this season has really touched your heart in a big way. And we look forward to you joining us in the next season. It's easy to look at a miracle and stop there, to celebrate the fact that you made it out without ever asking why you had to go through it in the first place. But today, I hope you see what I've come to realize. The miracle wasn't just about sparing my life.
Speaker 1:It was about preparing it. God was setting the stage. He was building a foundation I would need for some storms ahead, storms I never saw coming. And the truth is, the fire wasn't the hardest part of my story. What came after the wreck would take me deeper into suffering, heartache, and loss than I ever imagined.
Speaker 1:But because I had seen the provision, because I had lived through a moment when God showed up in the flames, I had something to hold on to when everything else was falling apart. So if you're listening today and you're in a season where nothing makes sense, if you're wondering why you're still here, just know it may not be the ending, it might be the setup. Stick with me because in the seasons to come, I'm going to share the stories that followed, the ones I never thought I'd lived through. And yet, somehow I did. Not because I'm strong, but because he is.
