This is the Sandals Church Podcast, a place for real people with real struggles learning to follow Jesus. Wherever you are right now, driving, working, or trying to make it through the day, we are really glad you're here. Let's get into today's message.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It was the summer of two thousand and nine, and I was in the throes of a secret addiction to marijuana. Now, if you tell me that you can't be addicted to marijuana, I'm gonna tell you that you're smoking something. And, but but I was, and I was also at Sandals Church on a Sunday morning. We were in the middle of a series on the Gospel of John and pastor Matt was wrapping up a profound sermon on the woman at the well. And at the end of his sermon, he said something that caught my attention.
Pastor Adam Atchison:He said, we're gonna do something that we don't normally do at Sandals. We're gonna ask that if you need healing from whatever it is, whether it's physical or financial or relational, it doesn't really matter. You don't even have to say what it is. We're just asking for you to have the courage to stand up. And we're gonna do something biblical.
Pastor Adam Atchison:We're gonna surround you and we're gonna lay hands on you and we're gonna ask that the Holy Spirit would heal you. Amen. Now pause for just a minute. Like Pastor Matt, I grew up a Baptist. And as a good Baptist boy, I know my theology.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I know the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I knew about the Holy Spirit on paper. But that he was a person that was alive and active and could do something here and now in our midst like heal someone. Now that was an interesting concept. I was ready to observe.
Pastor Adam Atchison:What what God might do. Let's see if God shows up. And so pastor Matt, he he said, we're gonna we're gonna have you stand. And I looked around and the closest person to me was the teenage daughter of a family that we'd recently become acquainted with. And I thought, okay, that's convenient.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I'll I'll participate. And so I remember as I laid my hands on this girl's shoulder, two parts of Pastor Matt's prayer. He said these crazy words. He said, May these hands be transformed into the hands of Jesus. And when he said that, to this day, I can't quite articulate in words the sensation that I began to feel in my arm.
Pastor Adam Atchison:The best I can do was it was like hot electricity. It was as if fire from heaven was running through my arm, and I I was so undone by it that I I remembered literally opening my eyes to see if I was cutting off my circulation. Like, clearly there's a rational explanation for this. But before you know it, I knew that something was happening. Something was happening and I began to tremble.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I began to weep uncontrollably. I was snotty nosed and then I remember the second part of the prayer. Pastor Matt said, Amen. And I remember amen because as soon as that sensation came it left. I sat down and my wife looked next to me as if I'd seen a ghost.
Pastor Adam Atchison:She's going like, are you okay bro? And all I could get out of my smarty pants, PhD candidate mouth was this, something just happened. Something just happened. I just kept repeating that over and over again. I knew I was obliged to share with the parents of this teenage daughter what I'd experienced as best as I could.
Pastor Adam Atchison:So I went up to them, I found them after church, and I began to tell them what had happened. And they started to giggle a little bit. It was kind of awkward. Started to get giddy. I was like, what is happening?
Pastor Adam Atchison:But he said, let me let me share with you what's going on. Our daughter, she runs cross country and several months ago, she was in a race and she collapsed. She went to the doctors and the doctors said, your daughter has these three things wrong with her heart. She can't run anymore. In fact, she may never be able to run again.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Said, But we're getting some more tests done. There's some second opinions coming. We want you to keep praying. But here he said this, he said, But we believe that your faith just healed our daughter. And I thought to myself, this this guy doesn't know me.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I'm a stoner. My wife doesn't even know that. Clearly this can't be real because if God was gonna choose a vessel to heal someone, he wouldn't have chosen me. Right? Would he not have chosen my wife or somebody else in the road that was following Jesus, that was reading their bible and praying and faithful?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Certainly, it couldn't have been me. A few weeks go by and I get the call from the dad. He says, hey, you're not gonna believe this or maybe you will by now. But our daughter, she doesn't have this. She doesn't have that.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And she does have this other thing. It's it's common. It's asymptomatic. The doctor said they don't know why she collapsed. She can run as much as she wants.
Pastor Adam Atchison:So that is an amazing story. Fast forward to about a month ago and I'm on the eighteenth tee golfing with some friends and my game has not been good lately. I've lost my swing somehow and I'm pretty frustrated. I'm with some friends, and my friend that's in the force and with me, he's also... He's a much better golfer than me, but he's also not playing too well.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And we're both kinda just not happy, to put it lightly. He says something that triggers me, and I'm not proud to admit this to you. But I reacted in anger. I cussed him at my friend. And praise God, my friend's a gracious guy.
Pastor Adam Atchison:You know, we're walking off the eighteenth green. Hey, sorry bro. Love you. Sorry bro. Love you.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Like, it was very quick reconciliation. Praise God. But how is it that the Holy Spirit in one moment can light my arm on fire from heaven to heal a teenage girl's heart, and in another moment I can't control the fire of my tongue as James three eight says. See, as we consider what it means to walk in the power of the spirit today, I wonder what kind of story you you think of. It's probably the first kind of story, isn't it?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Now don't get me wrong, I love what happened to me. I love that I got to experience that. I I think as a church we should be open to it. We should be praying for these kinds of powerful moments. I mean, I'm I'm an excitable little fellow.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Like, I'm I'm I'm wired for this kind of thing, right? Like, do it again, Lord. Like, I'm ready. Like, that was rad. Like, I'm I'm a sucker for intense experiences.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Let's go Holy Spirit. I'm I'm in now, right? But as we look at Galatians five today, and as I've I've been in this word, I am convinced that the power that matters most to God is the staying power of the Holy Spirit to form in us the character of Christ over time. It's not as sexy. It's not as sensationalistic.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It doesn't make for as an amazing of a story, but it's the daily living in step with the spirit that matters most to God. But there's a problem, isn't there? You think it's the first time that I reacted in anger? Immediately said something that I regretted that I'd have to make amends for? Or am I not the only one in the room that's been in this place where I've had repeated failed attempts at changing for the better?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Even the godly desire to wanna become like Jesus. And here I am again in the same place. Stuck like is there not progress possible in this battle against sin? See, there is a problem and we all have it. There is a war within.
Pastor Adam Atchison:There is a war within us. There there are some gnarly wars going on in The Ukraine and in Iran. And I don't I'm not here to minimize those, but the Word of God today is pointing us to a war that is much closer to home. We're gonna get into our text today. It's Galatians five beginning in verse 16.
Pastor Adam Atchison:So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil listeners, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other.
Pastor Adam Atchison:So you are not free to carry out your good intentions. Does that sound familiar? A little reminiscent of Romans seven. Maybe it's even more familiar because it's an accurate description of your inner world. I've had a lot of vices in my life, but praise God, a sweet tooth isn't one of them.
Pastor Adam Atchison:You know, I I, I grew up in Northern California and we had these things up there. They were they're out of San Francisco. It's it's kinda like an ice cream sandwich, sort of hard to describe, called an It's It. Oh, you know. Okay.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Good. An It's It. Because I call it an ice cream sandwich but it really deserves its own category. It's the oatmeal cookies that make it. If you know, you know.
Pastor Adam Atchison:But I hadn't had an It's It in decades. I hadn't even seen one in decades and I have a dear friend that may or may not have a pretty significant sweet tooth. Especially for ice cream related products. I'll I'll keep him anonymous, but a few years ago, pastor Dan Crowley invited me over. Sorry, man.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I know that's two weeks in a row. I don't... Picking on you. Invites us over for dinner and we have we have this nice dinner and he says, hey, you guys want some dessert? Well, sure.
Pastor Adam Atchison:He comes back in from the kitchen into the dining room with a box of Itzits. Vanilla, by the way, which is the way to go. I know some mint chocolate folks are out there, but you're wrong. And I said, I was just in shock. I was like, those are Itzits.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Like, I can't believe my eyes. Where did you get those? Asking for a friend. He says, Stayer Brothers. I said, Stater Brothers in Riverside.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Okay. Pastor Dan didn't know the Pandora's box that he had just opened. I I don't know if I got some on the way home, but about a year later, and God knows how many boxes of It's It's later, it got bad, y'all. It was so bad, I'm not joking. I went on their website and bought a graphic tee.
Pastor Adam Atchison:In my closet right now, I have an It's It t shirt. I love me submits it. But it got to the point where I hated that I loved it. Have you been there before? You you love something, but you go to a place where you love that you you hate that you love it so much.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Competing desires. A war within. Now we can laugh about my love hate relationship with an ice cream sandwich. But it's not so funny when the sins get a bit more serious. Right?
Pastor Adam Atchison:When when the kind that left unchecked will begin to destroy the things that matter most to us, especially the relationships in our lives that we care so deeply about. If you lose this war, good things in your life will begin to die. We need to know what's at stake here. Sin leads to death. So how practically do we win the war within?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Well, thank you for asking. To win the war within, I must identify the sin I need to crucify. I must identify the sin I need to crucify. You see, we need the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to us. Right?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Our hearts are deceptive. We wanna believe the best about ourselves. And in fact, the the... When Jesus begins to say that the promise of the Holy Spirit is coming and he begins to describe what he's gonna do. He says, one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world of sin.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And so as I read through this list, I call it the fruit of the flesh. In our translation, Paul's referring to it as the sinful nature. I want you to use this as an inventory. When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear. Sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Let me tell you again as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the kingdom of God. It's a lot there in that inventory. I kinda, as I was sorting through this, put these sins into two kinds of categories. There are some that are easy to identify. They're really visible.
Pastor Adam Atchison:They're on the surface. They're at a sort of a behavioral level, Sexual immorality. Sorcery. Right, that might sound outlandish, but I know a young adult at our church who came out of witchcraft. This isn't just first century stuff.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Outbursts of anger. Might even call it rage, right? Me on the eighteenth tee. Yeah, like that. Drunkenness.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Wild parties. Now the NLT just on this one, so you know the translation we just read from it sanitizes that one a bit. Most of your other translations, it'll say orgies. And here's what I wanna say to you. If you are caught up in some gnarly sin today.
Pastor Adam Atchison:If you're watching this because you're hungover again from the club and you told yourself yourself you'd be done with it. Maybe you're just sick and tired of being sick and tired, feeling dirty in your sexual sin. Maybe you're engaged in some pretty dark spiritual things. I want you to know you are welcome at Sandals Church. It's a churchy thing to say, but we we welcome you.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Come as you are. But at the same time, I want you to know this. Don't expect to stay as you are. Because there is no sin too great. There is no shame too deep, there is no guilt too heavy that the power of God cannot overcome it.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And you are welcome. But I think most of us, we read a list of sins like this, and if we're honest, we're looking for the things that we're not. Right? There's some relief. Never been to an orgy.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Right? It's a good thing. That's a good thing. But a lot of these sins are less than obvious. And you might even make the case that they're more dangerous because of that.
Pastor Adam Atchison:They're harder to identify. Impurity. Doesn't that sound like something that's beneath the surface? Something maybe that exists at a heart level? The kind of thing that Jesus talks about when he says in the Sermon on the Mount that even if you only look lustfully at a woman, you've already committed adultery.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Jealousy and envy. This is a big one. I think jealousy and envy are winning the war within with too many of us. In a digital world with social media, with comparison killing our souls, this is one that's winning the war. And yet, as many crazy confessions as I've received as a pastor, I don't know.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I I can't remember one confession of somebody being genuinely brokenhearted and repentant and confessing envy or jealousy. For as prevalent as it is, it's not something that's being confessed, at least not in my experience. Selfish ambition. If we're honest, I think a lot of what we do for others is actually selfishly motivated. There are times when I text my wife randomly during the day and I say, hey, I'm thinking about you.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I love you just because. And then there are times where I text my wife and I say, hey, I'm thinking about you. I love you for other selfish reasons. But some of the most helpful people are actually doing what they do out of a deep brokenness. They're people pleasers who are covering up some insecurity.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It looks selfless on the outside, but it's actually being motivated by something selfish. Maybe you've you've read through this list or you heard it read, and maybe even if I broke down some of these for you and you feel fairly unscathed, I just want you know you're not off the hook. You notice how he ends in verse 21, and other sins like these. It's not an exhaustive list. In other words, news flash, we are all sinners, But there's some work to do.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Look at Galatians five twenty four. Who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and the desires of their sinful nature to His cross. I want you to notice that language, to His cross and crucified them there. And though Paul uses the past tense in this particular verse, I want you to know from other writings in Paul that it's very clear that this isn't a one time process that happens at the beginning of faith. That to follow Jesus means being committed to putting the sin to death again and again.
Pastor Adam Atchison:This is an ongoing process. In fact, it doesn't end until we're whole and complete and we're looking at Jesus face to face. To be real with others means to regularly practice, to foster a culture of confession that is normalized. I wanna ask you this question, especially if you've been at Sandals Church a long time. When's the last time in your small group that sin was confessed, that you brought some sin to the table, that you created a space for someone else to bring their sin to the table?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Or maybe you're fairly aware of your sin. You're like, that's my problem. It's right before me all the time. I've identified the sin that I need to crucify. But we're talking about walking in power, right?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Knowing is half the battle. G. I. Joe tells us. Right?
Pastor Adam Atchison:If you're from the eighties, there's there's more than just being self aware of our sin. Where does the power come from to defeat sin? Now, I wanna have you do something that maybe you haven't done in some decades, depending on your age, you've probably never done this before. In the eighties, our teachers would tell us to put on our thinking caps. So put on your thinking cap for just a moment because there's a paradox here.
Pastor Adam Atchison:You don't have the power to defeat sin. You don't have the power to defeat defeat sin. Think about that. If you did, Christ wouldn't have had to die. In fact, this is what's going on in the context of Galatians for Paul.
Pastor Adam Atchison:He's saying, look, the idea that we could somehow make ourselves right with God, that we could somehow overcome sin, be be righteous before him, that's not the gospel. And this is what was being preached, and if you've ever read Galatians, he's fired up about it. He has some words to say. He's bringing us back to the truth of the gospel that Christ plus nothing equals everything. You don't have the power to defeat sin, but there's good news, there's one who does.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I have been crucified with Christ. This is perhaps the most famous verse in Galatians. I have been crucified with Christ, listen to this, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. It is the resurrection life of Christ in you that defeats sin. All you simply have to do is bring it to His cross where it's already been defeated and then you just rest in His grace for you.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Secondly, to win the war within, we have to selflessly serve others. We have to selflessly serve others. You see, we're not just saved from something, we're saved for something. Before the the two lists, the the fruit of the flesh, the fruit of the spirit, Paul makes it very clear that the whole point of winning this war within isn't just we can have victory over sin for ourselves. That's a good thing.
Pastor Adam Atchison:That's the beginning. But he says this in verses thirteen and fourteen, For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters, but don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. A lot of people have that thinking, right? I'm forgiven, it doesn't really matter. I can do what I want.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Instead, listen to this, use your freedom to serve one another in law... In love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command, love your neighbor as yourself. One of my favorite definitions of sin comes from Martin Luther. In the Latin, it's this, Homo incervitus in Se.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It means the human turned in on himself. I love that picture because what it means is the opposite of sin is that as we grow in love, we turn outwards toward others. As we look at the fruit of the Spirit, notice this, it's singular. In the Greek, it doesn't say fruits of the Spirit. It says fruit of the spirit.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And because of this, a lot of scholars actually interpret this that the fruit of the spirit is love. And that the other eight words that are there are descriptions of love. Again, let this be an inventory for you. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
Pastor Adam Atchison:There is no law against these things. You think our our world is a bit hungry for some of that? You know, this is one of those where when I read it, I self evaluate, I do my own inventory, and I do. I I feel kinda decent about myself at the end of it. I'm like, yeah, I think I've made some progress in my journey with Christ and his life and me coming out in these fruits.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And then I get to the last one, and I know I'm not off the hook yet. Self control. Dad got it. Still work to do. Go figure.
Pastor Adam Atchison:We have, some friends who are a bit ahead of us in life. They're about eight or ten years older than us, and they've shared with us that like, man, you're going to love empty nesting. It's amazing. These friends of ours, they've they've lived life well. They've stewarded their homes.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Their kids have launched, and I'm a little bit bitter though, because they didn't warn us about this really fun stage in between. From about 16 to, I don't know, 22. You know, if you've been through this stage, know it. I don't know what to call it. My working label is hell.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I'm just kidding. It's a bit dramatic. It's just awkward. And look, for the teenagers and young adults, I actually... Sincerely, I know it's hard on both sides of the street.
Pastor Adam Atchison:So they didn't warn us about this stage. And a little bit ago, one of our four boys, three are launched and they're off, but we were having a rough season with him. Let's just say that our relationship was a bit frosty. Okay? And we're on our way home, we're on the 91, we're driving home from a lacrosse game, and it's quiet in the car.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It's the end of the week. We're all tired. And out of the silence, my son sends this verbal grenade from the back seat. He says, In May, I'm gonna start stop serving at the church. Okay.
Pastor Adam Atchison:All right. And as a pastor who's given his life in service of the church, who's raised his family to be about loving and serving her. You can imagine how that verbal grenade landed. But you're not gonna believe what happened. I said nothing.
Pastor Adam Atchison:And some... About a minute or two of awkward silence goes by, and and he throws another verbal grain. He says this. He makes a big claim. He says, I actually think it's morally wrong that you would force us to serve.
Pastor Adam Atchison:At this point, I catch my my wife in my peripheral looking at me. As he's sending verbal grenades, she's seen my arsenal of rage nukes. She sees my hand on the red button and she's just waiting. She's like, what's he gonna say? And what damage control in the family am I gonna have to clean up for months after this moment?
Pastor Adam Atchison:I think because I didn't respond in anger, it actually created a little bit of safe space. It actually created the opportunity for my son to share his mind, even though I didn't like it much. By third thing he said, he was actually reeling back a little bit. He's settled down. He said, well, maybe it's not morally wrong, but just don't call it serving.
Pastor Adam Atchison:It's got to be a chore at that point. Okay. All right, fine. We get home and my wife says, that was really impressive. And I'm like, babe, I'm...
Pastor Adam Atchison:I promise you, that was not me. The natural self, the flesh of Adam, that's the eighteenth t, Adam. That was an l. Somehow, I... And I told her this.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I said, I sensed the Holy Spirit like almost as if the presence of God was right above my right shoulder going like this. I got this, Adam. I got this. I don't know if you know the amount of... I I know the power of the Holy Spirit's probably infinite, but that took a lot of power from him.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I imagine there was even an assist from the angels just keeping it there, right? Pastor Matt said recently that the evidence of the spirit in our life isn't the gifts, it's the fruit. Listen to what Paul says in first Corinthians at the end of 12 going into the the love chapter, chapter 13. So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. Right?
Pastor Adam Atchison:We should want that. Pastor Fredo next week, he's preaching on prophecy. We should desire these things. We should be open to these things. We should be praying for these things as a church.
Pastor Adam Atchison:But now, let me show you a way of life that is best of all. If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, that's tongues, but didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy and if I understood all God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, that sounds pretty rad, right? Who doesn't want that? And if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing.
Pastor Adam Atchison:If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it. But if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing. Lastly, to win the war within. We have to say yes when the Holy Spirit prompts. We have to say yes when the Holy Spirit prompts.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Paul wrapping up Galatians five says, since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives. When you hear the voice, say yes. I wanna circle back to that story in the summer of two thousand and nine in the California Baptist University gym at Sandals Church. You know that whole story, that was the movement of God. I played one small active role.
Pastor Adam Atchison:We were sitting in the front row because my wife likes to sit in the front row. And at some point I heard in the midst of my habitual sin, I still could hear the voice. He said, I want you to touch her shoulder. I want you to lay lay your hand on her as we pray. And so I praise God that somehow, someway in that moment my yes was on the table.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I climbed over. I had to climb over a chair in order to put my hand on her. I hate to imagine what would have happened had I said no. Had I, with a spirit of fear, the spirit that God does not give us, hesitated. I mean most of us don't just say straight up no to God.
Pastor Adam Atchison:We know better, right? But there there is a more passive resistance, a delay. Maybe in that spirit of fear we question ourselves into disobedience. But I I I also don't know what would have happened with that girl's heart. Maybe God would have chosen to heal her in some other way, but I would have missed out.
Pastor Adam Atchison:Don't miss out. First Thessalonians five nineteen says, do not quench the Holy Spirit. Don't quench the Holy Spirit, and a fast way to do that is to is to not say yes. Do you think the Holy Spirit's gonna wanna distribute His power to somebody who's consistently resistant? Or do you think He's gonna unleash it to those who are open and ready with their yes?
Pastor Adam Atchison:You know, we've had a yes on the table as a church. We've been praying, seeking, longing for revival. And re recently, I I thought about revival a little bit differently. I don't know how you would, if I if you were to imagine, what would it look like? If in our church, the Holy Spirit was unleashed and there was a fresh movement of God, what picture comes to mind?
Pastor Adam Atchison:I imagine it's something like us at church in the gathering where there's abandoned worship. Maybe there's people coming forward and they're they're confessing their sins. Maybe there's more arms on fire with healing miracles happening. And all of that is good. But I began to think this, and I I think this is from the Lord.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I think the revival that God wants in us happens outside the walls. I think it's a revival of the people of God marked by love in their daily life, keeping in step with the spirit, bearing fruit so that others might come and taste and see that the Lord is good. Would you pray with
Vivi Diaz:me?
Pastor Adam Atchison:Holy Spirit, I confess representatively on behalf of all of us that we are sinners in need of your mercy. God, pray that all of us in our own way would not only be able to identify sin, but to come back to the cross of Christ, which has the power to give us actual victory in this war. And that as we find that freedom in you, that we would be freed up to selflessly, sacrificially love others well. That the fruit of the spirit would be what people know us by. And that as that happens, God, that they would see Christ in us, the hope of glory.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen. Thank you to pastor Adam Atchison. What an incredible, powerful word on how the Holy Spirit is ready to partner with us to battle the war within ourselves. And to our friends online, I want to say thank you to continue to be a part of Sandals Church.
Pastor Adam Atchison:I wanna invite you personally to to support what we're doing here, and you can do so by heading to sandalschurch.com/support. Be well.
