Eric Feeney

After teaching for nearly a decade at his alma mater in Waterbury, in 2014, Eric Feeney began teaching at Wolcott Elementary in West Hartford. Shortly following, Sam Sohn, the father of one of his students, passed away suddenly from a heart attack. He left behind four beautiful children and a loving wife, Nancy Wallace-Sohn. Eric saw first-hand the toll this took on the family as they navigated their way through this unthinkable tragedy. The following year, Rashad Collier Sr., another father of a student in Eric’s class, passed away in Hartford as a result of gun violence. Rashad left behind two fantastic children and a loving wife, Denise Villegas. The impact of these tragedies weighed on Eric and motivated him to build an organization that could provide assistance for similar situations. With that, Friends of Feeney was born. In 2019, Friends of Feeney Inc. became an official 501©(3) nonprofit organization, allowing more funds to be raised and expanding the range of services provided to children and families in need. Today, over a decade since Eric’s idea to build a community organization dedicated to supporting our friends in need, Friends of Feeney has burgeoned into a reputable and recognized organization capable of providing financial and resource support to numerous families and individuals across greater Hartford and beyond. Through this work, an incredible community of children and families has been recognized, who care for and appreciate each other’s kindness.

David started his video career in the early 1990s working on video crews as an independent contractor for such companies as Martha Stewart Living, IBM and Xerox. After graduating Southern Connecticut State University with the degree in Corporate Communications, David continued his video production career and accepted a position at WFSB in Hartford, CT. Within a few years the news and production studios became his charge and David designed, installed and maintained the televisions sets for the various programs at the station. At the end of 2013 David founded DirectLine Media, a video production company that specializes in creating memorable and compelling video content for businesses.

on Facebook, and I said, absolutely not.

They're like, why? We love

Under no circumstances am I going
to be associated that closely with Feeney.

Give me some some degrees of separation.

So we are on the defensive.

That was great analogy.

And it just happened to connect cleanly.

regarding last play, Ben,

I want to let you know there was never
any intention to get you in the mouth.

I pump faked and leaned in to draw a foul.

We were down eight and a four point
play would have been a great miracle.

People do it all the time.

The ref should have called it two.

With that said, I want to know.

I want you to know.

After looking back on the play,
I reacted inappropriately and I apologize.

My bad man.

I regret not checking with you
right after it happened.

You had every right to be pissed.

We exchanged words
in the heat of the moment.

I want to apologize and check in with you.

I hope you're feeling
better. This morning.

I feel like golf I don't know,

driver and mid-range game.

But it's point being it's hard to say.

You say I golf two weekends in a row.

So when you talk about the fourth year
running, the charity golf,

I mean, it seems like your organization
has been able to expand

like you, over the years.

They're like a,

like how many people you've been able
to help like 2020 versus 2025?

Yeah.

Yeah I mean I don't know.

So I know please.

I think I'm not exactly sure.

I know Covid was slow,
but just this month actually,

since 2025 started,
we've already helped 20 families.

We just hit our hundredth family.

So we're very excited.

We've raised over $250,000
and we just helped our hundredth family.

So what what big do you,
Fuchs with that guy?

Well, a hundredth family at

our funeral.

What does that mean?

Like you say,
like I help this family, like. Yep.

So our word of mouth is getting around
so well

that people submit to our email
or to our website page.

And, we have a donation donation
request form where someone would fill out

their information,
the family's information,

the issue or need or medical support.

And then how much youth
they think that would help.

We meet on the board.

The board of directors meet twice a week,
every every other Thursday,

and we discuss future events
and some donations. So.

And we we've never said no, we've said
no, actually to a family in Florida.

It was out of our local.
We're a local charity.

We wish we could have helped.

It was a hurricane, issue in Florida.

But, but that family
that's heard of us in Connecticut,

we wanted to help their brother
in Florida.

Unfortunately, we could not.

But we are helping anywhere from,
you know, Hartford to Waterbury

and everywhere in between.

A lot most a lot of families
come from West Hartford.

We just help the family.

Unfortunately, someone passed away.

A family is having cancer.

The woman works at a pizza place
at the local in town.

Who else do we help?

My good friend from high school.

His house burnt down. Louie.

Thinking of Louis. Great guy.

We just helped him with a check
in donations of Amazon

supplies, like cleaning products
and stuff like that.

But, just trying to help as many people
as you can.

I'm very fortunate, you know?

Teacher, happy career and great job.

I've been helping students
inside the classroom.

Always want to try
to help them outside the classroom.

It's it's a good,

And models
appropriate behavior to my daughters.

You know, we're we're helping others.

So I like to do that.

I'm from a divorce family,
so I knew how it was

not to see my dad every once in a while.

I could never imagine
never seeing him again.

So I empathize with that
first family that that that happened.

Yeah.

Just.

And then we're working in the community,
collaborating with wonderful people like

Direct Line media, like maximum leverage,
like Fuchs Financial.

So great people in the community,
has really bought into our, our mission

and our goals and helping us out are
are you talking about progress and growth?

Our golf tournament, first year, 10,000.

Second year 18,000, I think 25,000.

So the goal this year
30,000 plus, we're already on our way.

So we have gotten
a lot more sponsors so far.

Now, granted, it was during Covid.

Nobody had anything else to do.

So became this big, like mash up.

We both, by the way,
we messed up for two weeks ahead of time.

We both tested before the
all the things that we needed to do.

Covid friendly ish.

We had our own bubbles right. Yep.

I may have seen some Iraqi

training videos, but it was the first time
my wife failed me jumping rope in.

Last time I.

And so we set that

up to schedule a time and Shapiro Dave

Shapiro was like, why don't you come over
and practice first?

Because I don't think I picked up a ball.

And you heard he he hired a trainer.

But go ahead, continue the day

I shot in his driveway

before going to somebody else's yard.

And after a Dave, shall we take like,
four jump shots?

He's like,
if you do that during the game, I'm

going to come down there
and punch you in the face. Yep.

And I said, really?

He's like, absolutely, you can't lose this

or that okay.

And I don't
I think like I wasn't all that nervous,

but Dave was nervous for me
because I had lost to the amount of,

for the rest of my
it might be more than anyone.

I would have made t shirts.

I would have made t shirts.

We'd be talking a totally different way.

I would have started off.

I remember when I remember
when I beat you,

it was about 11 to 5, give or take.

And not knowing this,
you might have gotten to

you. You
did back me down, but not realizing

you got two inches on me and maybe

50 pounds 40 pounds made easy.

So you two 4250 was

I want to say so

before Covid, I was like to 25 to 230.

Okay.

At that point during Covid,
I was probably back and forth.

Okay.

Right now, about 245 solid muscle,
all steel, all steel,

all steel.

The cameras from from the neck.

15 like TV cameras either, but no. Bad.

And you bringing that up? You had to.

And I was just like you said,

I'm not going to take less and learn.

Lesson learned.

I thought you wanted a rematch.
I thought that was a whole.

We're going to Facebook
live, stream a rematch.

I'm going to have to get like, Rocky five
and just start running

through the mountains
with a stick picker. Reverse. Rocky.

That was machine gun, not on Drago.

I just, did I messed that up? Yeah.

So forget I mentioned that farm football.

if we're talking about basketball, I think

and I hate to ask this, but last season
you were a captain, right? Yep.

How would you rate your abilities
as a captain?

I mean, I don't measure, like,
you know, your team, the league, right?

Wow. I'm just asking questions.

I mean I didn't even know

I wasn't going that angle, but you.

I did not, because I, you know, listen,
everybody has their own interpretation.

I think, like,

people say, that they cover their head
when they're in the presence of God.

And so they were like people when they go
to synagogue or something all the time.

I would rather let
my ten year old be kind of my girl.

So I think it's important
to allow that to happen.

So I don't cover it all. Yeah.

Rabbi chatting over episode 54

was I wrote these down, actually,

but it was really, I learned a lot
because he wears the kippah all the time.

Obviously wears it on the court, wears
it to the grocery store, and he does that

because when he's walking in an aisle

and if someone sees him,

they're more comfortable asking for help
because they know he's a rabbi

or he's representing,
this culture in this religion for that's,

you know, that's positive

to have.

They got eternal life.

But I thought that was also true
of the number success.

But let me not but yes.

So yeah.

He said, and then my friend
Matt, former camp director, said,

I found that so interesting
because Matt wears his too,

and he didn't really realize
why he did it.

But Rabbi, on my podcast exclusive

allowed him to, you know, reflect and say,
oh, that's awesome.

That's why I wear my kippah.

And if you're wearing a hat,
you don't have to wear it like you have

in your heads covered, and you should
wear it while you're eating, right?

No. Oh, you're not really big into that.

Your dad

hate to disappoint you.

Yeah,
but I know my my feelings on religion,

I care.

That we're doing the right things.

And I feel like as a Jew,
I feel like, you know, our goal

is to try to make the world
a better place.

And the people around me

make sense, which is to.

And, you know,
I think that inherently that's,

you know, that's what we're here for.

And I think a lot of the other stuff
as well, personally,

I think that sometimes
we use physical things

to remind us of what we think
and put on to keep our people right there.

And, and I respect that.
And I think that's wonderful.

Take anything away from that.

It's just not where I am.

And, you know, I give my kids
the framework of what I believe

and then you do what you want, right?

I'm not I don't want you to be
so unvaccinated into how I feel.

I want you to think for yourself
and to are you.

And I think so much of what I like about
Judaism is the question of,

why are we doing this?
Why does this make sense?

Does this make sense for me?

And I think it's okay
to have those questions and to do it.

I so I'll tell you,
like, I started the company.

And I

to me, like, financial planning is

giving yourself
enough power to have control.

You know, I,
I think that's really important.

So if, if your boss is being a jerk

and you realize that nobody
should listen to this person

and you want to walk away, it's
knowing that you can actually walk away

not having to be so demanding
that paycheck.

That's right.

I've got other options.
I can kind of just myself. Softball.

I've got I'm comfy
and I have the ability to walk away.

When I started, for example,
I was working for another company

and my daughter is four

and I was having a conversation.

If you want to be,

and he was talking to me in a way
that if he was talking to my daughter,

I hope that she would get a

no matter how much money she was making,
what the circumstances

were to have enough respect for herself

to be able to get up and go.

And when I had that thought,
my daughter was here, that I would be.

And I have to lead by my own example
and get up and go.

And that was when I basically was like,
I'm not worth anybody else.

I'm going to try this myself.

I'm going to take the time,
throw it on the way.

Very exciting stuff.

A little bit terrified.

And I started with April 2019,

and the only way

that I was able to get in business,
because I was so afraid to do anything

that the other company didn't, I didn't
want to do anything that I wouldn't do.

I wouldn't do anything
the way that they did it.

So I only did library workshops,
which I had never, ever done this on a

great and all of a sudden,

like, you know, typically takes two years
for business to break even for people.

Nine months. Awesome.

And then, it was March of 2020 Covid hit.

Couldn't do libraries anymore.

I remember within the first library said,

hey we can't have you come in
because we're closed.

It's like, oh man,

what am I going to do?

Because now the third one is anyway, so

oh man, I meant 2019.

Now I was just going to ask
and now you have Middletown,

West Hartford, Middlebury, mystic.

I was looking to extend it,

And you're not doing the right thing
