What is Clydesdale Media Podcast?

We cover the sport of CrossFit from all angles. We talk with athletes, coaches and celebrities that compete and surround in the sport of CrossFit at all levels. We also bring you Breaking News, Human Interest Stories and report on the Methodology of CrossFit. We also use the methodology to make ourselves the fittest we can be.

Well, today is Friday.

You know what that means?

I don't have to go to work tomorrow.

From the gym to the screen, yeah,

we cover it all.

Midday motivation every time you press

call.

Lunch with the Clydesdale.

Cowboy bring the heat.

Crossfit, boobies, music on repeat.

Half hour hustle, yeah,

we building that brand.

Grab a plate, tune in now,

you part of the fam.

It's lunch time.

What is going on, everybody?

i got a comment on our youtube video

the other day from helson abernas mr

helson he said he was listening to our

show with earbuds in at the grocery store

and when the theme song came on he

found himself dancing down the aisle

throwing stuff in the basket just come on

grab some pasta put it in a basket

yeah hundred percent i don't know why you

wouldn't i love that our theme song is

that catchy

i want to know does he did he

think like he find that odd like he

that wasn't going to happen was it the

first time he had ever heard it because

like i well you and i and vicky

all are all just sitting here just bobbing

and weaving while it's going on waiting

for it to finish up so i mean

that's a thing yeah yeah but hey taking

it dancing at the grocery store is like

a step yeah step up yeah definitely

Judy Reed and Vicki and I keep doing

that again.

I'm not used to having help, guys.

I'm not used to having help.

Judy Reed, like that color on your shirt,

Corey.

Remember, everyone deployed.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Ohio.

Yeah.

I was just going to say it's a

nice salmon color.

It's technically red.

It's just really terrible lighting in here

in my closet.

Heel, yeah.

Yeah, heel, yeah.

You know what color shirt's really cool?

This color.

Look at that.

Yep,

shipped out I think twelve shirts last

night.

That's a mighty big stack of bags you

had on that post.

If you had ordered your shirts prior to

Seven p.m.

Eastern time last night.

Your shirts are in the mail.

They're already there.

They're gone.

Off.

Whoosh.

We're talking about a U.S.

Postal Service.

Probably not whoosh.

It's probably more like a whoosh.

It's probably more like, yeah, come on,

boy.

Pony Express.

Mm-hmm.

Vicki so kindly put up the picture of

the shirt and the Venmo and the cash

app QR codes thirty two dollars with

shipping that includes shipping and

handling and that is if you're in the

United States to all fifty states we've

already hit ten states ten out of fifty

and look Meg says she just ordered last

night

That means I've got the District of

Columbia,

so that'll be eleven out of fifty-one.

Need to go into New York?

Not yet.

I need to go bug Garrett and Colleen.

Yeah, put name, size,

and address in the memo, please.

Thank you.

Mike DeVito,

who I think is getting a shirt right

now.

Hey, well, not right now.

It's in the whoosh mail.

Probably not right this second.

Soon.

Hey,

my mom's parents retired from the USPS,

and yes,

they will confirm the dumpster fire.

There you go.

Bananas crazy.

That's an interesting comment,

Mark Phillips.

Do we think Ms.

Voigt-Miller listened to the show?

So she is a subscriber to this channel.

She has commented in the chat and she

has commented on videos.

So there is a chance that Becca

Voigt-Miller listens to the show.

And I do like the fact that she

put out that post yesterday.

That's amazing.

Good on her.

If she's listening right now, kudos.

Awesome.

Thank you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you,

thank you.

And if you don't know what I'm talking

about,

she put out a post yesterday on Instagram

saying,

if you're a Masters athlete and you have

concerns or feedback as to how the Masters

CrossFit Games went,

please send them to her so she can

address it on the CAC.

I am super curious as to how many

she got inundated with.

Like how, how many, like, you know,

she opened up her email this morning and

there was eighty seven messages in there

because it wouldn't be hard to do.

I think you're underestimating the number

of messages she's getting.

Oh, I sent several people.

I don't think she knows what she opened

herself up to.

I don't think she understands a can of

worms that she just uncovered.

No, not at all.

Not at all.

Maybe she does know.

Maybe she does know and is like, okay,

let me gather all these things in one

place so I can bring them to the

next CAC meeting and be like, hey, look,

here's a hundred emails from a hundred

different Masters Games athletes.

And they're all saying three things,

whatever.

It's pretty strong evidence at that point,

right?

Um,

can I just say Becca Voigt Miller is

one of my favorite people in the world.

I say that a lot, but yeah,

she was my,

she was one of my analysts when I

was with the morning chalk up.

Yeah.

Um,

she used to do the bottom line with

me and, uh,

because she was at the time,

even though she made semifinals and she

competed at semifinals,

she was truly a master's athlete at that

point.

Yeah.

And so she was giving analysis on the

workouts and all of that stuff.

She was awesome.

She's fit, dude.

And she's cooling the flip side of the

pillow.

Okay, probably dumb,

but I still think when people say the

CAC, it's still funny.

Like,

what was the focus group like when they

settled on that?

I don't think they had a focus group.

I think they were just like,

what are we going to call this?

I said, well, it's an athlete council.

Okay.

So this is a CrossFit athlete council.

Yeah.

So the CAC.

Yeah.

Cool.

And they probably never took it into their

brain that people were just going to start

calling it the CAC.

Right.

That was probably not ever an option that

somebody just like, oh,

maybe they just called it the CAC.

Nope.

But we like acronyms.

Yeah.

I work for government.

So everything gets turned into an acronym.

Yeah.

then everybody pronounces it so yeah

anyway it is what it is it's never

not going to be funny true uh corey

i still do not know how you finished

at monster games did you beat gleich

nobody beat john um cows and crossfit said

uh he meant he would that corey was

only counting the dms from jamie those

were the first that's a fact

Oh, again, like I said yesterday,

all she said was what everybody in the

Masters at age group has been thinking for

quite some time.

She just happened to get it all out

in public.

Good.

And all out in like, fifteen minutes.

All the stuff came out all at once.

Good, dude.

It needs to be said,

and it needs to be said on a

public forum.

It can't just keep being said between the

Masters athletes themselves who just talk

about it and are,

I don't want to say scared,

but otherwise may not necessarily have a

voice or a platform to be able to

get it out there so that maybe something

can actually be done about it or at

least have it be recognized.

Hey,

we understand that this was what it is,

and we are actively working to change it.

Again,

not that I'm expecting anybody to say that

this is,

we understand what was going on and,

and we're actively rooting to change it.

But if it got, if,

if that or us talking about it or

whatnot is what got Rebecca, excuse me,

Becca to make that post yesterday,

inviting people to email her and whatnot

so that it could be brought up then,

Hey, job done.

Did I mention to you that Lito and

I used to be friends?

Can I express to you, like,

I love you guys in the chat.

I truly do.

But can I express to you how much

I really don't care why Gabby withdrew?

To me, like,

and here it is back to, like,

it's sport, right?

Yeah.

Someone withdraws, I've already moved on.

Oh, that sucks.

Okay.

I'll spend a couple minutes thinking,

okay.

I wonder why, blah, blah, blah.

And then I've moved on to Eileen worse,

who was a backfill and finished like.

Fifteen to eighteen somewhere in there.

I don't know the exact number.

Yeah.

Mid pack for sure.

That's a cooler story to me than why

she withdrew.

Absolutely.

And that's sports.

And now we have a producer.

yeah now he just that's perfect good lord

she's on top of her stuff i love

it um she also she also uh threw

together some images of colton flying

yesterday she sent a couple over and those

are fantastic they were fan freaking

tastic i said it i sent it to

david johnston he was like oh my god

that's amazing i was like yeah agreed

there he is uh the flying hog colton

mertens

If you guys don't know,

being five foot something and a hundred

and ninety,

hundred ninety five pounds and being able

to lay out like that and make that

dive is not an easy thing to do,

especially at the end of a workout.

I'm just in case you guys were wondering.

Well,

if you're a male and you lay out

like that, you know,

they're going to be repercussions.

Hundred percent.

That isn't going to happen.

And so you have to give up.

You have to give yourself up knowing that.

Yeah.

Things are going to hurt after that dive.

It's probably not going to be great when

you wake up.

Well, when you stand up, rather get up,

but it's the kind of sacrifices you make.

I remember Tim Paulson in the height of

his career dove across the finish line,

I think, ninety percent of the time.

I don't think I've ever seen.

Yeah.

I don't think I've ever seen Tim just

like get across the finish line.

Now that you say that.

Yeah.

Because he was one of – first of

all, you couldn't miss him, right?

Bright red hair.

Not quite as bright as Lito's,

but dude's definitely a ginger.

I just – first of all,

the first thing that always comes to mind

is Tim Paul's send because him sending it

on that echo bike workout that one time

when he just got on it and just

tried to break it.

Yeah.

uh but yeah i think about it it's

dive it's you know feet first jump slide

whatever i don't think he's ever just like

hopped up onto the platform and called it

good um peter benoit so does the test

to get into the crossfit games actually

get the top fittest athletes if a backfill

gets eighteenth

I don't think it's an indictment on the

test, Peter.

I think it's an indictment on the method

in which we do it.

I think anytime that you do online...

There's ways to gain.

So there is a difference between someone

who can do a workout three times,

figure it out,

and get a really good score by the

end of the weekend,

and someone who is given the workout and

must accomplish it right then and there in

the moment at the time.

You cannot test that pressure piece of it

online.

No.

Some people can handle the bright lights.

Some people can't.

Some people perform better under the

bright lights and some people just don't.

So that's why everybody loved regionals

because part of the test of regionals was

you have to finish top five or you're

done or you're done.

And that tested that, that pressure piece.

So we got the best people who could

handle that at the games.

Of course,

there could be multiple reasons why that

person was only a backfill.

Online brings cheaters.

There are so many factors.

But I do think that when you're getting

down to that,

the online last chance qualifier,

online semifinal,

whatever you want to call it at that

point,

there weren't a lot of people doing that.

The video review was much more intense for

that.

But I do believe that it does not

test the pressure cooker that is.

Lito makes a great point too.

It's also not a single test as there

are multiple ways to get through.

Yeah.

And look,

the people who are on that bubble, right,

like her, it's not like they're not fit.

So, okay, she gets a backfill invite.

Cool.

Now, all of a sudden, she's mid-pack.

Well,

if she had done a little bit better

on the day,

she wouldn't have had to worry about a

backfill invite,

and she probably still would have finished

mid-pack.

Well, and I think in those semifinals,

it was one or two points difference

between – Yeah,

she was knocking on the door.

Yeah.

We're not talking about huge advantages of

the people who got in and she didn't.

Or the guy that nobody knew who he

was.

I keep wanting to say Gonzalez.

Or Gomez.

I don't remember.

That's how much, right?

Manuel Reyes?

Reyes.

That's him.

Close to Gonzalez.

Almost there.

It's Spanish.

I'm sort of Latin origin.

Nobody knew who that guy was?

And apparently they still don't.

And they still don't.

I still couldn't tell you his name,

obviously.

But, I mean,

they were asking other athletes about him,

and they were like, he legitimately said,

I have no idea who that is.

And apparently he competed in the team

games too,

and they still couldn't remember that.

No.

Unbelievable.

Joseph Ramirez wants to point out that not

all Latins are the same.

You are definitely a special one, Mr.

Joseph.

David Reed had a comment.

Vicky, you had up for a second.

I look at the open as a baseline.

There's a certain level you need to make

semis.

Semis has a baseline to get to the

games.

If you meet that baseline,

you're fit enough to handle the games

test.

I think from a fitness perspective,

all of that is true, David.

yeah but i think from a spotlight in

front of a large crowd thing isn't tested

in any of those yeah and that can

make or break an athlete at the highest

level and you know what that is that's

sport that's sports um

before we dive into the last little thing

and i do have a one o'clock meeting

today so this isn't going to be a

super long show um we talked about the

cac and how the twelve-year-old humor in

us all thinks that that's still funny do

you know what's still funny and i forgot

it was funny is king of the hill

oh god yeah so those kids could read

they all be highly upset my wife and

i watched the last two episodes of last

season because the new season just

kicked off i don't think i've laughed out

loud at a show that much so it's

all mike joe dude that dude is he's

a hell of a writer he really really

is there there's a scene in the next

to last episode of the last season where

i rewound it three times just so i

could laugh again just because like i

didn't get enough of that hold on let

me get up let me get a little

bit more of that

And all it is, all it is,

is Peggy is playing pickleball.

And the Asian woman has told her that

she's great at pickleball because of her

wide hips.

And she has taken exception to that.

So now she's playing with ferocity.

Right?

Yeah.

And she goes to plant and her knee

pops.

And all of a sudden,

all you hear her say is,

son of a bitch.

And she falls to the court.

And I could not stop howling.

Because every time something like that

happens to my wife,

that's exactly what she does.

She goes, son of a bitch.

And I kept rewinding it going, that's you.

That's you.

Does that sound familiar at all?

I know it should.

That is fantastic, dude.

That is absolutely fantastic.

That's one of my favorite shows.

Bobby, autocorrect can duck off.

He's beyond his name.

That boy ain't right.

That boy ain't right.

That's a fantastic show.

I cannot say enough about it.

If you didn't know,

they brought it back like a year ago.

And now Bobby is a hibachi chef at

a half Japanese, half Texas barbecue.

That in and of it's a,

you can stop right there.

I guess that's, that's enough.

That's not, um,

i need to find because i they they

took it away but um mike judge also

did the tales from the tour bus i

think you and i've had this conversation

before um where he goes they tell stories

about uh the first season was all country

country singers so like george jones and

whatnot it's all animated looks just like

king of the hill right but it's people

telling actual stories of stuff that

happened and then they animated

oh my word it's fantastic dude like um

because it's all real stories and it

starts off with mike judge who's animated

by the way he animated himself talking to

the camera

And it explains like what's fixing to

happen and whatnot.

And Johnny Paycheck, George Jones,

some other like songwriter types and

whatnot.

And it is absolutely hilarious.

And the second season was strictly focused

on George Clinton.

And and like the whole like, dude, oh,

my God, it's so good.

So that dude is fantastic.

He George Clinton.

Yeah.

George Clinton lives in Tallahassee,

Florida.

I lived in Tallahassee for four years.

I ran into George Clinton picking out a

sweater at a Sam's Club.

And if you don't know who George Clinton

is,

his hair is eighty-seven different colors.

And he's the leader of the P-Funk

All-Stars.

P-Funk All-Stars, baby.

And to see him over there holding up

a sweater with the dreads of multicolored

rainbow.

Oh, my gosh, dude.

I'd have lost it right then and there.

I'd have been like, nope, that's enough.

That's enough.

I don't need any more.

And my wife's like,

you going to go say something to him?

No.

First of all, he's a large man.

Yeah, he is a big dude.

He's a large man.

Like, no, I'm not going to go.

What do you want me to go say?

Hey, good choice.

I like the brown one better.

Yeah.

The brown one goes better with your skin

tone and the three different colors you

have in your hair.

No, dude, you're not doing that.

Anyway, Mike Judge is brilliant.

Of course, we've gone off the rails again.

Yeah.

From Beavis and Butthead through King of

the Hill.

I don't know if I'm,

I don't think I ever missed a Beavis

and Butthead when I was in college.

I've seen most of them.

And then Daria, Daria, Daria.

Daria.

Daria.

Yeah.

Anyway, so we,

yesterday the homework assignment was that

we have,

we have a guy who just won his

second CrossFit Games.

What is his legacy?

Our executive producer, Dr. Vicki,

sent me an essay that she wrote on

what is legacy.

And her point to the whole thing was,

it's not really what you do on the

floor that creates a true legacy.

It's more like...

all the intangibles and the things that

come from that that you do off the

floor.

And our example is like Rich didn't only

win four titles.

Rich elevated everything.

He owns an affiliate.

He owns a programming company.

He owns a training camp.

He went on to the teams and elevated

teams for six years.

All of that stuff.

Right.

And so I,

I totally understand where she's coming

from and I don't disagree with it,

but I think it all starts with,

you have to be great on the floor

first.

Yeah.

Right.

Yeah.

I wouldn't even necessarily say you have

to be great.

You have to be good enough to be

recognized.

have to be good enough for people to

remember who you are to where it gives

you the capability and the ability and

well-liked that probably is also a thing

on there to be able to do all

those other things because otherwise

you're just some dude who competed at the

games yeah so like joseph is saying it's

too soon for justin and james legacy talk

I don't think it's too soon for Justin.

And I think Justin is doing things now

that he didn't do a couple of years

ago that are going to change what we

look at as his legacy,

that van trip to go from affiliate to

affiliate to affiliate and do the drop-ins

with his buddies and handing out gear and

prizes to people up and down the coast

of California.

Like those are the things that are going

to change Justin's legacy.

Or let's say add to it.

Add to it.

Sure.

Because no matter what,

so the guys that only won once,

like the Ben Smiths and the, you know,

Jasons and whoever else,

you still have a legacy because just by

virtue of winning,

you're going to have some sort of legacy.

How you want to be remembered is what

we're getting into with all the extra

stuff that you do outside of it to

where people have their perception of you.

There's that saying that, you know,

people aren't going to remember the

accolades.

They're going to remember how you made

them feel.

Right.

Clayton,

while Matt did most of those things and

his legacy is significantly less than

Rich's, it isn't a standard formula.

I agree with you.

Yeah.

I agree.

But Matt,

I think that Matt going on Rogan hurt

his legacy more than helped it.

the three hour and whatever that was

minute podcast did more to damage his

reputation and his legacy than in anything

he has done.

It's just starting to come back now.

Well, five years ago.

Yeah.

And the fact that he,

I think the fact that he participated as

much as he did in the games this

year is a step to rehab that legacy.

A hundred percent.

One percent.

Just the fact that he showed up,

he came out there.

He was he again,

like we talked about earlier,

he visibly seemed to be enjoying himself

on the floor with the microphone,

giving out the workout,

all of the things like that goes a

long way.

whether people want to admit it or not,

just the fact that he looked like he

was enjoying himself when people still,

even though that was forever ago,

still had that picture in their mind of

him sitting there talking to Rogan and

telling him all the crazy stuff that he

said, right,

or stuff that we would think would feel

like it's crazy.

Now all of a sudden you're on the

floor and you look like you're enjoying

yourself.

Oh, okay, you actually want to be here.

That goes a long way.

because he really distanced himself from

crossfit oh hundred percent um

intentionally or not that's what ended up

happening doesn't pat have a legacy in the

space he does i everybody has a legacy

it's just how big that or how great

it's a it is perceived to be yeah

right the fact of the matter is

both brent and pat have a legacy i

think their legacy is tied together

because for some reason because they're

both canadian people think they're family

and so because they're both and they both

had a rookie year the same year and

they like that whole was that when i

you know they just showed up on the

scene all of a sudden together even though

pat had been on a team like two

years before that that's why they're

they're they're lumped together

And they both love them or hate them.

Them,

the actions they took after the Lazar

death did something to their legacy.

And whichever side of the fence you were

on, it either, in your eyes,

made it better or made it worse.

Yep.

mike devito honestly and i love matt for

his accomplishment but i think his

appearance was strategy to ensure his

business growth like now all of a sudden

you care i think mike you're being a

little bit too harsh when i became a

dad my perspective on everything changed

hugely and matt just gave well he didn't

give birth but his

I hope he did.

That would have been awesome.

His wife has given birth and he has

become a father.

He's the goat,

so much so that he's given birth.

And when that happens,

your perspective on the world changes and

your perspective on life changes.

I've interviewed Matt on this show.

I have talked to Matt in person several

times.

Never once did he come off as the

guy on Rogan.

Right.

Never once in real life did he do

that.

And so we have all these perceptions and

how we perceive people to be,

and that's not always reality.

So I think that Matt will forever have

a legacy.

Will it ever be Rich's legacy?

No.

No.

They're not the same people, though.

Matt has never, one way or another,

spoken publicly about his faith.

There's no, you know,

there's not that component of it.

Matt doesn't have HWPO hunt and, you know,

the things that they do for all the

stuff that Rich does, dropping into,

you know, if he's somewhere,

he's going to drop into a Mayhem

affiliate.

You know, Rich,

he's just a different type of person.

if you know anything if you guys have

met matt fraser is an engineer brain works

fundamentally fundamentally different than

most everybody else on the planet rich is

a and god forgive me for just saying

this but rich grew up being a jock

an athlete his brain also works

fundamentally different than most people

on the planet

They look at problems differently.

They solve problems differently.

It's not going to be the same people.

It's just not, right?

I mean,

there's not necessarily anything wrong or

right about one versus the other.

It's just a different approach.

And I think, like you said,

I think Matt has,

they got two kids now, right?

Yep.

Yeah.

A hundred percent softened,

especially now that we got two.

And like, you become a dad, dude,

especially with two.

That's all that matters.

sure them kids are okay they got food

they're loved roof over their head whatnot

um so i think that's why you saw

a little bit of a a shift you

know like ramirez was saying when they

talked about the games this year like he

seemed way more relaxed than he was last

year yeah i um

talked to him a bunch at the syndicate

crown a couple years ago he was there

it was when hopper was still with him

and he was there coaching and he was

a he was a joy to talk to

honestly um because he wasn't competing it

wasn't like first of all i think hwpo

was a a creation that matt o'keefe came

up with to capitalize on the success of

matt's career

I don't think Matt ever felt that he

was going to be a coach.

He'll tell you he never was.

He never wanted to be a coach.

Right.

And so I think,

and the other part of this is finding

where he fits,

like hiring Justin Kotler to take over the

coaching lead of HWPO and him being able

to say, hands off.

I'll come in.

I'll talk to the athletes.

I'll do whatever I need to do was

the best thing Matt could have ever done.

Yeah,

probably the most shrewd business decision

since H H W has been a thing.

Let me get one of the best coaches

in the,

in the space and put him under my

wing,

especially saying where Justin was like,

he just wants to coach.

He didn't want to run the under all

the underdog stuff and do all the managing

shit.

Why he's told you that right here on

this show.

Yep.

Match made in heaven.

Um,

Mike says, if he wants HWPO to survive,

HWPO needs to be a huge part of

the community.

I bet you if you polled every CrossFitter

in the world,

None whatsoever.

I can believe that he was a little

badass growing up.

The story she tells about them going

skiing...

And all of a sudden,

they heard those rumors of this kid

flipping off of a ski jump,

doing multiple flips and twists and all

this stuff.

And she looked at her husband and goes,

I know it's Matthew.

Like, yeah, that's going to be mine.

Let's go find him before he gets us

all kicked out of here.

Yeah.

they went over and he won like some

big prize for best ski jump or whatever
