Good morning.
And welcome to morning cereal
Okay, good morning and welcome to
Tuesday. Hey everybody, I have something
super special for you
today and like Christmas
It only comes around once a year. Now.
I'm super excited to tell you all about
it today is and you know
What you probably already know it but
today is national cow milked
while flying an airplane day. I
Repeat it's national cow milked while
flying an airplane day
So grab your Holstein and
your PJ and you're ready to go
And you might be thinking that I made
that up. I did not these
are all actual national days
National cow milked while flying an
airplane day is celebrated
annually on February 18th
And again, I'm sure you all knew that but
it's celebrated annually to commemorate
the day a cow named Nellie J
Became the first cow to be flown and
milked in an airplane. It happened in the
earliest 20th century
But if you don't have a cow or a private
jet, it's also national drink wine day.
That's something I can get behind Cheers
Alright today's quotes one fun nostalgic
quote and then a second quote to tease
our book review later in the episode
Hopefully one of these quotes will speak
to you and jumpstart your
day in a positive direction
The first quote is from Celine Dion and
she says quote life imposes things on you
that you can't control
But you still have the choice of how
you're going to live through this
End quote life is always throwing stuff
at us and it's incumbent upon each of us
to hit these obstacles head on
Stay positive and move
through them. Thanks Celine
All right today's teaser quote from the
book review is quote if we know we are
going to be rebuked anyhow
Isn't it far better to beat the other
person to it and just do it ourselves?
End quote and as usual we'll unpack that
here in just a minute
during the book review segment
But first let's jump into our usual dose
of fun and historic facts
from this day in history
And today's news facts and
birthdays are for february 18th
We're going to start all the way back in
1885 and that's when mark twain first
published adventures of huckleberry fin
in the united states
Then in 1898 inzo ferrari was born
He's the italian race car driver that
would go on to found the
ferrari car company in 1947
Then in 1930 the planet of pluto was
discovered by a 24 year old american with
no formal training in astronomy
Then in 1977 the space shuttle took off
on its maiden flight the enterprise and
it was mounted on a boeing 747
shuttle carrier aircraft
However, the first free flight of the
space shuttle took place on august 12th
in the same year of 1977
Then in the next year 1978
Hawaii hosted the first ironman triathlon
where contestants had to swim 2.4 miles
They had to bike 112 miles and complete
the marathon run measuring 26.2 miles
And happy birthday. If today is your
birthday you share a birthday with
Rapper and entrepreneur
dr. Dre. He turns 60 today
Actor john chevolta. He turns
71 and yoko ono. She turns 92
Now the number one
song on this date back in
1994 was the power of love by seline dion
And I have to say these last two days
have been just jam packed
with some of my favorites
And seline dion is no different. Selene
is my favorite singer.
She speaks to my soul
And i'm okay saying that now
It took a lot of time for me to get used
to that and I took a lot
of flack for that in the 90s
But I could definitely rock some serious
adult contemporary just as
much as rock and rap in the 90s
Selene's song the power of love was a
cover of the original song
from 1984 by jennifer rush
But seline's version went multi-platinum
and earned seline her
first number one hit in america
And the number one movie on this date
back in 2004 was first 50 dates
And that's another adam sandler movie
this time co-starring drew berrymore
And apparently adam sandler was on the
fence and he wasn't
sold on making the movie
So drew berrymore typed him a letter to
convince him on an actual typewriter
And kids that's a machine with keys to
produce alphabetical
characters one at a time on paper
That's actually the dictionary's
definition of a typewriter kids a
dictionary is like a paper google for
defining and spelling words
All right
Well, let's go ahead and move on to some
personal growth in the book review
segment of morning serial
This is where we take a few moments to
reflect on lessons learned from the
current book we're reading
Currently we're reading through dale
carnegie's how to win friends and
influence people as you know
It's a timeless book that is consistently
on all the must-read lists
And it's packed with rock solid advice
and actions for all of us to use and
build healthy
foundational concepts to live by
Yesterday we finished up chapter two of
part two entitled a sure way of making
enemies and how to avoid it
And in chapter two carnegie revealed that
there is an art in how we handle
difficult conversations
Especially when we are trying to change
someone's mind or see things our way
It's difficult to change someone's way of
thinking and their beliefs and that's
because they are deeply held and they're
associated with their self-esteem
Carnegie says quote when we are wrong. We
may admit it to ourselves
And if we are handled
gently and tactfully
We may admit it to others but not if
someone else is trying to ram the
unpalatable fact down our esophagus
end quote
Carnegie's principle number two is show
respect for the other person's opinions
never say you are wrong
And that follows part three principle
number one, which was the only way to get
the best of an argument is to avoid it
All right. So today we begin the third
chapter in part three, which is entitled
if you are wrong admit it
And carnegie jumps right into one of his
personal stories to wet our appetites
Carnegie tells the story of how he would
take his dog for a walk
in the park near his house
And since they rarely ran into anyone he
would let his dog run without a leash
which was against the law
One day carnegie and rex his harmless
little bulldog. They ran into
a mounted police officer who
Completely tore carnegie apart about
breaking the leash law rex could have
killed squirrels and bitten babies
And the police officer said that if he
caught carnegie and
rex again without a leash
Carnegie would have to
take it up with the judge
The policeman left carnegie
with just a verbal whipping
Well carnegie and rex tried the leash and
muzzle for a few
days, but neither liked it
So they chanced the walk the next day
without a leash and a muzzle
And as luck would have it coming up over
the hill came the same police officer on
horseback and rex was
sprinting towards him
Before the policeman could even speak as
carnegie knew he was in for it
Carnegie beat him to it by saying quote
officer. You've caught me red-handed. I'm
guilty. I have no alibis. No excuses
You warned me last week that if I brought
the dog out here again without a muzzle
you would find me end quote
As you probably suspect the officer
cuffed carnegie and
took him directly to jail
I'm just kidding just seeing
if you were paying attention
No, the officer who just scolded him for
ignoring the law and the dangers rex was
to squirrels just a few days earlier
Was completely different
The officer said that he understood the
temptation that there
weren't many people out there
And maybe they should just go run on the
other side of the hill where he couldn't
see them and they'd
all just forget about it
What was the difference
and what's carnegie's point?
Well, it comes back to people want to
feel important and the
policeman was no different
Carnegie says quote so when I began to
condemn myself the
only way he the policeman
Could nourish his self-esteem was to take
the magnanimous attitude
of showing mercy end quote
Instead of fighting with the policeman
carnegie shot that down by immediately
saying the policeman was
right and that he carnegie
Was in the wrong
Carnegie says quote if we know we are
going to be rebuked anyhow
Isn't it far better to beat the other
person to it and do it ourselves?
Isn't it much easier to listen to the
self-criticism than to bear the
condemnation from alien lips end quote?
It reminds me of a story I had once and
it was only once never before had it
happened and never again
I promise but I once rolled through a
stop sign on the way home
from a kid's soccer game
And I should have known better because
this particular neighborhood is
constantly patrolled
by multiple policemen
Well, as soon as I rolled through the
stop sign a cop pulled out with his
lights right behind me
And luckily for me there was an immediate
right into a parking lot that I just I
turned into right away
In fact, I knew I was caught immediately
and I began turning in almost before the
policeman turned on his
lights to pull me over
Similar to carnegie the cop was almost
laughing when he came to my window
because of how quickly I pulled over
Knowing that I was caught red-handed. I
told him yeah, that was a
pretty bad california stop
And he too let me go with just a warning
Carnegie suggests that when we take the
initiative to admit we are wrong
That we should say all the negative
things about ourselves that the other
person is thinking and wants to say
And be sure to say it all before they can
Then carnegie says quote the chances are
a hundred to one that a generous
forgiving attitude will be taken and your
mistakes will be minimized
end quote
Just as the policeman
did with carnegie and me
Well, i'm interested to see where this
chapter takes us as some people really do
struggle with
admitting it when they're wrong
But it's a reflection of maturity
So come back tomorrow as carnegie
discusses trying to defend these mistakes
that we make at times
Okay, I know you're anxious to get on
